Book Synopsis
Are you tired of feeling like you have to check social media to find out what you're supposed to think? Are you weary of the latest self-help books that promise to set you free but only imprison you with laundry lists of studies to consider, positive affirmations to recite, and Facebook groups to join?
We've all seen the memes that populate the internet: live your truth, follow your heart, you only have one life to live. They sound nice and positive. But what if these slogans are actually lies that unhinge us from reality and leave us anxious and exhausted? Another Gospel? author and Christian apologist Alisa Childers invites you to examine under the light of Scripture modern lies that are disguised as truths in today's culture. Everyday messages of peace, fulfillment, and empowerment swirl around social media. On the surface, they seem like sentiments of freedom and hope, but in reality they are deeply deceptive.
In Live Your Truth (and Other Lies), Alisa brings refreshing honesty and clarity to hot-button issues to help you:
- Uncover the common lies repeated within progressive circles
- Hold on to the soul-restoring truths that God's Word offers
- Be empowered to live the way your Creator designed you
Being the captain of your own destiny and striving to make your dreams a reality is a huge burden that you were never meant to bear. Discover true, biblical freedom instead.

Using current cultural examples, Alisa delicately balances fun, lighthearted stories with dark, heartbreaking realities to ground and uplift the believer. Using Scripture in abundance and the main focal point, the reader is reminded again and again of who the God of the Bible is and the authority of scripture. Comparing scripture with popular cultural publications, the contrast cannot be denied, yet Alisa breaks down how easy it can be to "not see the lies", as the best lies are mostly made up of truth. A great encouragement for the Christian, I would recommend this book to believers and people who may be on the fence about Christianity. Read it to be aware of what your family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers are being fed culturally. Read it as a reminder of how important it is to stand on THE truth of God, even if it means you end up standing alone.

Being raised by people who taught me the common popular beliefs nearly everyone follows - 'I just want you to be happy', 'follow your heart and you'll know the right decision', 'listen to yourself' wasn't something I was ever aware could be dangerous. I went to church, Sunday School & youth group and learned about Jesus, the Cross and accepting Christ for eternal life. It's only now I look back and wish I had been embedded with solid Biblical grounding & how it's not all about me but all about Him. This book brings to light ways we aren't really thinking & conscious of the things we're hearing and absorbing day to day. Alisa makes more obvious which things are true & which are not, and uses scripture every step of the way. She's also brought to the forefront how the culture uses language deception, how common words have been redefined & how to spot the differences. Lessons in this book will help you discern the truth to combat popular cliches, mantras, and affirmations that otherwise SEEM good and helpful. She explains how this has invaded the church & how we've learned to read the Bible from the lens of 'SELF'. These are lessons I wish I had as the younger me, to know how to read the Bible for what it is, WHO God is, how to view hardships & difficulties in life, and see how He wants us to live. I hope many younger people will get this book & have it flip their views 'right side up' away from me-centered to Jesus-centered.

You do you, boo. Put yourself first. Be your authentic self. There is so much advice floating around, it’s hard to know what to believe. It sounds good, but contrary to popular belief, making ourselves the center of the universe is not actually the solution to what ails us. Alisa does a fantastic job of explaining why with just the right mix of personal examples and biblical truth. As she mentions, though, the fragrance of Christ smells good to some, and stinky to others. If you’re one of the few that want to know what “true truth” is rather than the ego-stroking, popular philosophy of the day, I highly recommend reading this book. “Truth is a Person and HE is your reward.”

This book is so timely! It has helped me see the lies that we seem to easily believe. They seem good, they feel good, and everybody seems to accept them as truth, so they must be true.....right? This book is easy to read and Alisa Childers shares funny life experiences to help get the points across (which, BTW, are amazing!). Put this book at the top of your reading list, this is a must-read!

This book reads so well, it's just like having a conversation with a friend. A wise friend, grounded in the Word of God. The words, anecdotes, and stories are so real...so easy to read. This book reminds us that when we stand on the truth, rather than opinions, society, and social media trends that mask themselves as truth, we will be able to stand firm on a stable foundation. That stable foundation is God's Word.

This book is fantastic. Alisa challenges so many little slogans that are pervasive in our culture. They are pretty little lies that sound so good many of us accept them without thinking through the implications. She is relatable and artfully weaves humor into such a serious topic. She makes you laugh and challenges your assumptions all throughout the book. All the while, she is leading us to evaluate every statement through the lens of Scripture, the revealed Word of God, THE TRUTH. This is a must read! Get your copy or listen to the audiobook. Alisa reads it herself!

Alisa addresses the lies our culture has been putting out for years and the damage it has caused not only in our culture but in the Christian church and she puts biblical evidence as to what the answers to these lies are. She does this in a way that is gracious and easy to understand for the average “normie” like myself as John Cooper says. This is a must read!

This book is a must read! There are so many catch phrases going around, and Christians are getting caught up in them. Many times not realizing that they’re actually damaging and not helpful or Biblical. The book is beautifully written and an easy, yet challenging read.

Alisa Childers’ newest book is an insightful look at some of the most popular mantras offered up as truth today. She skillfully dissects cultural counterfeits and replaces them with truth found in Scripture. The book is replete with stories from the author’s life and pop cultural references that demonstrate the real life implications of these false ideologies. Childers points her readers to God and His Word as the ultimate source of satisfaction as an alternative to worshipping at the altar of self. I highly recommend this book as a wise roadmap for navigating today’s exhausting and self-obsessed world.
Excellent Book! Well worth your time!

"This isn't your typical heavy-lift apologetic book. In fact, I managed to read this book with 3 children, 2 restless dogs, and a very cranky cat competing for my attention. Alisa Childers wrote a brilliant yet accessible BIBLICAL response to cultural lies trying to ensnare us today."

A must-read for every Christian. Those cute little inspirational/motivational memes on social media and t-shirts? So many of them are just not biblical and they are having an impact on our lives. We need the truth of the Bible and Alisa points out the truth and why so many of these little sayings aren't truth at all so that we can spot the lies and run to the truth which sets us free.

Alisa Childers did not disappoint in her new book Live Your Truth (and Other Lies). As she did in her previous book, Alisa uses Scripture to support her positions on what is true. In this book, she lays out the theological reasons that some of today's most popular feel-good phrases are not only unbiblical, but harmful to our spiritual growth. If you want to base your worth on something unchanging and solid, read this book.

In her latest book, Live Your Truth, And Other Lies, Alisa Childers exposes many lies, that we encounter in social media and in today’s society. Statements like : Live your truth, you are enough, God just wants you to be happy, you should not judge…. These things sound affirming, and wonderful, but they turn out to be lies that ultimately lead us away from God and His truth. Alisa does a wonderful job of exposing these lies, but doing so in a loving and caring manner. I highly recommend this book to Christians everywhere.

This book is an extremely important one in a culture overrun with following our feelings and making happiness the number one goal in life. Not only are we allowing our desires to dictate our lives and our identity, but they are also now considered the arbiters of truth. God has been dethroned in our hearts and replaced with relativism and going our own way. (Why do we do this to ourselves?!) Nothing new under the sun, however it's important to be able to spot the modern day presentation of these attractive little lies, particularly when there always seems to be a grain of truth in them. "You are enough." "You should put yourself first." "#YOLO" "God just wants you to be happy." "You shouldn't judge." "Be your authentic self." These trendy phrases, often seen on t-shirts, journal covers, social media memes, and pushed in self-help books wrapped in Christian jargon are - simply put - the opposite of truth. Childers does an excellent job of practically teasing out these lies while offering refreshing biblical truths in their place. Truths that don't have us carrying the weight of ourselves on our own shoulders. If you really want to help yourself, read this book and allow it to help you to place your focus back on Christ where it belongs. You'll be so glad you did.
