About the Book

"Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain. The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she's an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs. Honestly, it's a pretty sweet gig-until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and broody older brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor's career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And that same Jack who now sits on the hiring committee at MIT, right between Elsie and her dream job. Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but...those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she's with him? Will falling into an experimentalist's orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?"--

Book Synopsis

Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain.

The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she's an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.

Honestly, it's a pretty sweet gig--until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor's career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he's the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.

Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but...those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she's with him? Will falling into an experimentalist's orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?

About the Author

Ali Hazelwood is the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis, as well as a writer of peer-reviewed articles about brain science, in which no one makes out and the ever after is not always happy. Originally from Italy, she lived in Germany and Japan before moving to the US to pursue a PhD in neuroscience. She recently became a professor, which absolutely terrifies her. When Ali is not at work, she can be found running, eating cake pops, or watching sci-fi movies with her two feline overlords (and her slightly-less-feline husband).

I have loved almost all of Hazelwoods books except for this one. I feel like the two main character lacked chemistry. There relationship was a little forced.

4.5★/ 16+/1.9 Spice Where do I even start?! I can honestly say this is my favorite book of hers because it's funnier, sexier, and swoonworthy! She's returned with one of my favorite tropes: enemies to lovers! Although, the STEM parts of it sometimes go over my head. I was an Photographic Technology major, and I couldn’t begin to tell you what a liquid crystal is… It is a tad annoying but, yes, the author's signature character design of a tiny, fragile girl and giant man continues in this book, just as all the previous ones. Like, can we get a girl that isn’t fragile and at least 5’9? Although, Jack is not like his predecessors. He isn't really a quiet and brooding grump. He's charming, generally nice, undoubtedly confident, and a lot more flirty than I expected. Which I LOVED. Elsie, however, she’s definitely felt like her predecessors. She was a stressed out people pleaser, that doesn’t know how to say no. However, I truly enjoyed watching her character development and grow into someone more confident. Another thing - Ali Hazelwood has improved her spice game for sure. Do I wish there wasn’t such a slow burn and a little bit more spice? Yes, but it also worked for this book to have some long tension. Overall, I truly enjoyed this book. Love, Theoretically - was sweet and romantic. This is definitely her best work thus far. Even better with the cameo of Olive and Adam (I miss them). I do wish the Epilogue was a tad bit longer or there was another bonus one. I needed more… ALSO!!! For once, a FMC that actually hates coffee. Finally!!! And, one that prefers tea. Win. I also think we need some dual narrative!!!
