I am a big fan of the BLOCK series. This is my first TALES book. The illustrations are colorful and lovely, but I find the “story” to be lacking. It’s one run-on sentence and the cadence feels very off with random single words “hidden” behind the flaps. I welcomed that it features elements from multiple Asian cultures throughout since it’s a Lunar New Year book not “Chinese New Year”, but the story still ends in a Chinatown and doesn’t make good use of the zodiac animals so I feel like they tried to be inclusive but didn’t think things all the way through. Overall, I will enjoy the book for as long as I am able to make up my own narrative at storytime (i.e. discussing what each animal gifts to the children in celebration of Lunar New Year).
