Rather than being forced to choose one or another, you can enjoy the superior security and increased data transfer speeds of a wired Ethernet connection, as well as the flexibility of three SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports for connecting external hard drives, flash drives, and other USB devices, all while charging your laptop's battery. Q: 1. Can the USB C charging port be used for data transfer, or purely just for power charging? 2. What is the transfer speed of the ethernet port? Thank you! Green
submitted by Green - 3 years ago
A: Hi Green, The USB-C port is only used for charging a device for up to 60 watts. Also, the transfer speed of the ethernet port is 5Gbps as well.

Versatile on Android, but draws significant power

I used this on a Chromecast with GoogleTV, and it worked including PD passthrough, but I had to bump up the supply power significantly to stop the Chromecast from complaining that the power was insufficient. Even though I never ended up using it, the network adapter seems to have a lot of power demand on its own at idle. The USB-A ports were a convenient addition. I would expect this would be compatible with most modern Android phones and tablets as well, but be prepared for the power draw.
It works, but not seamlessly

I will preface this by saying I'm using this dongle with my MacBook Pro (intel), but I don't see how that should affect anything. I'm disappointed by this adapter. It appeared to be the inexpensive answer to my USB-A and ethernet needs, and while it does work, I'm able to get an ethernet connection and access peripherals through the USB-A ports, it doesn't do it as seamlessly as I'd hoped. In my experience I need to plug anything into the adapter first, before I plug the adapter into my computer. Even then, there's no guarantee that the peripheral or ethernet connection will make it through to my machine (I frequently have a mass storage device that does not show up when I plug the adapter in). If the adapter is already plugged into my computer and I plug the ethernet cable in second, I will get no internet connection (but if I then unplug the adapter and plug it back in, it connects). I've also noticed on multiple occasions the USB-C port I've had the adapter plugged into stops working until I restart my computer. When the adapter is working, it at least stays working (no connectivity drop outs or USB disconnects), but getting all the ports up and running can be a pain. I would not recommend this adapter.

The ethernet and USB C ports work fine, but a couple of the USB ports were defective I can see they were bent and therefore not letting the cable in. I had to push them down to straighten them.
Exceeds expectations

Some of my USB devices will regularly show connection issues when connected to this dock. On Windows this device setup quickly (even the ethernet port) which was really nice.

Half the time when I wake my Mac the ethernet has stopped working. You have to unplug it and your power delivery cable if you have one plugged in to reset it. Many times this causes issues with USB devices. I've tried several mice in the device and it starts to make a bad lag and stutter on them. This also usually requires unplug everything from it including the power cable to get it work again. Also it doesn't pass-through nearly enough power. I was only getting 53 watt through it, which would cause my Mac to drain under any intense tasks. Just not worth it.

excellent connectivity

So far, this thing has performed flawlessly: I wanted to connect to the house system by ethernet, and this seemed the best way of accomplishing that. Works fine. The connection to the USB side of things seems excellent, too, with nothing getting dropped overnight when the system is asleep. Minor problem: the ethernet socket does not engage with the catch on the plug, and sometimes the plug wanders loose.
