About the Author

Ann Marie Brown made her first solo trip to Yosemite at age 22. Like many first-time visitors, she was immediately inspired by the Valley's sheer granite walls and shimmering waterfalls. Parking her car at the first trailhead she saw, she set off on the Four-Mile Trail. Carrying nothing but a water bottle, she intended to hike only a short distance but was so wowed by the scenery that she kept on walking. Two hours later she found herself at Glacier Point, considered by many to be the grandest viewpoint in the West. Scanning the scene, she noticed tourists dressed in everything from high heels to a nun's habit, and realized that she could have driven to Glacier Point instead of walking. Ann Marie vowed she'd never again go hiking without a map.

Felicia Kempwas raised camping and hiking across the U.S. with her family and discovered backpacking for the first time at Philmont Scout Ranch at the age of 13. She's hiked everywhere her travels take her, from the depths of the Grand Canyon with her younger brother to the turquoise waters of Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia with her husband. When she and her husband moved to Northern California they immediately started exploring, fell in love with the diversity of landscapes, started a family, and began sharing their hiking adventures publicly online in 2015. When her middle child was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease, getting on trails as a family became more of a challenge. Aside from the typical balance of full-time jobs not in the outdoors industry and a family of five, she and her husband worked to find ADA-compliant paths to continue sharing the joys of nature with their children.

Felicia's goal is to give confidence to would-be and newer hikers to break through barriers and get outside. She advocates for diversity initiatives through both her legal career and in the outdoors, and helps to educate others on the principles of Leave No Trace. She hopes that when people see her plus-sized, tall and brown body hiking solo, or wrangling the family on the trail, it inspires others to feel comfortable taking up that same space. She's written several outdoors-related articles and enjoys creating social media content as Family Trail Time. She is the founder of Take A Hike Tay-Sachs in support of Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation and founded the group Sacramento Women Hikers.

Game Changer for Recreational & Social Programs

I am a Direct Support Professional working with young adults with disabilities in the Monterey Peninsula and “Moon Northern California Hiking” is a game changer for our Social and Recreational programs. The book has become a valuable resource for planning weekly Saturday hiking groups and longer summer hikes in Big Sur, the Pinnacles, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties. The detailed content allows us to plan our staffing needs, schedules, and cost more effectively, particularly the duration of the hike, elevation, and cost for parking. That information is critical for our students and staff to prepare for breaks needed and safety information (ex: the warning about the undertows at the Carmel Meadows and hazardous military munitions at the Ford Order National Monument Loop). The icon and map symbols key is user-friendly and the Trails at a Glance section is a quick reference guide that is a starting point for our program to plan our hikes. As a mother of an elementary school aged child who enjoys hiking too, this is vitally important too that we communicate safety precautions in the beginning of the hike. As a Monterey local, I also appreciate the historical facts that I learned reading the book. I smiled reading about the Portola Crespi Cross in Carmel and names of various tidepool beaches in Pacific Grove, places I drive past all the time but didn’t know their names and information. I found this to be a surprising bonus from the book and one I have not found in other travel guides. The “Best Nearby Bites” are authentically local favorites spots and I can attest they are solid recommendations. The authors conducted their research thoroughly, from gaining the local perspective to historical knowledge, and provided accurate details such as mileage markers. The pictures are beautiful visuals of the hikes and I like the combination of landscape photographs with the ones showing the hikers themselves. I highly recommend “Northern California Hikers” for yourself, a gift, or donation to a school, local program or nonprofit that could benefit from the information. This is my first Moon book and look forward to purchasing more Moon Travel Guides, especially the Road Trips (listed on pages 661-665).

This is an incredibly well thought out book. I especially like the fact that whether you're a seasoned hiker, or a novice beginner you're able to gain incredible insight to the expansive trails this area has to offer. Also, just a side note, very much love that the Authors encourage everyone, of all "walks of life" (couldn't resist the play on words) to get out and enjoy the outdoors. 5/5 all day
