Emerson May is "the good girl." She's the perfect daughter, the caring friend, the animal shelter volunteer. But when her best friend's brother breaks into her room, his hands covered in blood, she doesn't scream or call the cops. Because when Deacon smiles at her, Emmie doesn't want to be good...

The whole town believes notorious troublemaker Deacon is guilty of assaulting his father. Only Emmie knows a secret that could set him free. But if she follows her heart, she could be trusting a killer...

Good YA Mystery

4 out of 5 stars

This is another enjoyable book by Natalie D. Richards. Emerson (Emmie) is a likable character who is drawn into a dramatic situation when her best friends brother, Deacon, shows up at her home after his father has been attacked and rushed to the hospital. Deacon, carrying a lot of pain from the death of his mother, can't stand the sight of blood and Emmie helps him clean up, leading to the start of a mystery about what happened and why his father can't remember anything. There are a lot of little twists and turns and the story was a good one. I didn't feel like it was too predictable and I felt like it was a good read, laced with intrigue and some romance. Richards does include quite a bit of drama and twists in family/friend relationships, which also helps drive the action of the story forward. Overall, I feel like this will be a well received novel for many of my high school students. Thank you Sourcebook Early Reads for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
