Description
1554 Enlightened Dark Ale from New Belgium Brewing has a surprisingly bright taste and a dry, chocolaty finish. This craft beer is evocative of the dark brews enjoyed in Belgian taverns 500 years ago. 1554 defies the style guidelines of modern beer. Although dark in color, 1554 is not a porter, stout, schwarzbier, or bock. Rather, it is a rebirth of a lost beer style called zwert (Flemish for black), which uses gruit for bittering. The oldest reference to zwert beer comes from 1285. However, our brewing inspiration came from a book published in 1554, which was the height of popularity for zwertbeer. First released in 1998, our whimsical improvisation includes a variety of specialty dark malts, a dash of licorice root, and a European lager yeast that’s fermented at ale temperatures. Its complex flavor creates a satisfying, full mouthfeel. Even though it's a dark beer, it still balances brightness with depth. It's not a porter, not a stout—it's 1554. Brewed by New Belgium Brewing, a certified B-Corp and proud member of 1% for the Planet. 6% ABV. UOM is 12 fluid ounces. Count per pack: six pack, bottles.

Your review effectively conveys your enthusiasm and love for the beer. However, here is a polished version that maintains your sentiments while adding a bit more structure: --- I recently enjoyed 1554 on tap at a restaurant in Port Washington, WI, and it was incredible! I am completely obsessed! And I am not normally a beer drinker. However, I’ve had trouble finding it anywhere near me, including in Chicago. I live in southeastern WI, and this is the only beer that I have ever been this obsessed about. The taste is so delicious—hearty yet smooth. Please get this back in stock. I would love to know where I can find it locally.

I have been drinking 1554's since I was allowed to have a brew. The malty notes and crisp, chocolate finish make this beer more than appetizing. Like NB's description says, it's not a porter or stout. This is a dark, Belgian style ale. So good! Hope I win that bike!
Smooth and gentle, very, very drinkable.

I wouldn’t drink any dark beers, after I sold NBB products for many years, I will give any bold body beers a chance. Now the mighty 1554 is always my go to friend!!

There is hardly one flavor that this brewery has produced that has not become my personal favorite. Since they have become available in my location, they quickly became my go to beer and beverage! From the early beer flavors to the new Juice Force flavors - I Love them all !!

This beer is similar to many popular dark beers but is smoother and more neutral in taste. My top beer right now. It isn’t as strong as a Guinness or stout beer, isn’t a Bock beer but is in the ball park but a little more flavor and is smoother. It is similar to Xingu which was served in high end steak houses in Houston.

I haven’t been able to find this variety at my local liquor store but I had a taste when I visited Colorado this summer. Very easy to enjoy with no harsh over the top hoppy- ness. I particularly liked the chocolate and licorice notes but I didn’t get the notes of tobacco's that some reviewers allude to.

I loved fat tire when it first came out and still do. I loved your brewery tours. I discovered 1554 and it is so balanced. It’s Krisp , but not heavy. It’s got a full flavor and body without being cloying or too sweet it’s the perfect beer. It’s on Tap so many places throughout the US. It is my go to beer you can never go wrong.

I've been a fan of New Belgium beers for years, but 1554 is my absolute favorite. It's a dark lager that's perfectly balanced between sweet and bitter, with rich flavors of chocolate, coffee, and caramel. which gives it a unique and complex flavor profile. 1554 is the perfect beer for sipping on a cold winter night or enjoying with a hearty meal. It's also great for sharing with friends and family, especially those who are new to craft beer. I highly recommend giving 1554 a try if you're looking for a delicious and unique beer experience. My only wish is to be able to drink it alongside Transatlantic Kriek again. The chocolate cherry combo was the perfect double fister.
