The North American P-51D Mustang Fighter, nicknamed "Petie 3rd," was a legendary World War II aircraft flown by Lt. Col. John C. Meyer of the 487th Fighter Squadron, 352nd Fighter Group, based at RAF Bodney, East Anglia, England in 1944. The P-51D was a long-range, single-seat fighter and bomber escort that played a vital role in the Allied victory in Europe, providing crucial air support during bombing raids and ground attacks.
Lt. Col. John C. Meyer was a renowned ace pilot, with 24.5 victories to his name, and "Petie 3rd" was his personal aircraft. It was named after his wife, Patricia, and featured distinctive shark mouth artwork on the nose. Meyer flew "Petie 3rd" on numerous missions over Germany, where he engaged in fierce dogfights against German fighters, and also escorted American bombers to their targets.
