"The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Turn of the Key and In a Dark Dark Wood returns with another suspenseful thriller set on a snow-covered mountain"--Book Synopsis
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER"A claustrophobic spine-tingler." --People
"Not only do Ware's novels wink at [Agatha] Christie in a saucy way, but Ware herself is turning out to be as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime." --The Washington Post The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Turn of the Key and In a Dark Dark Wood returns with another suspenseful thriller set on a snow-covered mountain. Getting snowed in at a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn't sound like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there's a breathtaking vista, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless that company happens to be eight coworkers...each with something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide. When the cofounder of Snoop, a trendy London-based tech start-up, organizes a weeklong trip for the team in the French Alps, it starts out as a corporate retreat like any other: PowerPoint presentations and strategy sessions broken up by mandatory bonding on the slopes. But as soon as one shareholder upends the agenda by pushing a lucrative but contentious buyout offer, tensions simmer and loyalties are tested. The storm brewing inside the chalet is no match for the one outside, however, and a devastating avalanche leaves the group cut off from all access to the outside world. Even worse, one Snooper hadn't made it back from the slopes when the avalanche hit. As each hour passes without any sign of rescue, panic mounts, the chalet grows colder, and the group dwindles further...one by one.
Review Quotes
PRAISE FOR ONE BY ONE "[Ware] sets the bar higher in One By One by burying her principal players in an Alpine chalet beneath an avalanche. . . . Readers will recognize the obvious homage to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, but with enough ingenious twists to make this whodunit another triumph for Ware."--The New York Times Book Review "Not only do Ware's novels wink at Christie in a saucy way, but Ware herself is turning out to be as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime."
--Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post "A claustrophobic spine-tingler."
--People, "Best Books of Fall 2020" "Ware manages to make a retreat in a chalet in the wide-open French Alps feel claustrophobic, nerve-wracking and deadly... The author's choice of telling the story in dueling narratives - Liz, a former Snoop employee who was invited to join in the retreat; and Erin, one of the chalet's two staff members - enhances the steadily escalating pace of the book."
--USA Today "Especially timely, given that the terror of isolation is at its heart... This is And Then There Were None rendered for the twenty-first century."
--Booklist (starred review) "Ruth Ware is often described as the new Agatha Christie . . . [S]he is a revitalizer, bringing the genre to a new audience with her modern preoccupations and addictive style."

--PopSugar "Ware does what she does best: Gives us a familiar locked-door mystery setup and lets the tension and suspicion marinate until they reach fever pitch. Another win for Ware... Simply masterful."
--Kirkus "The Turn of the Key was not her first book, but its sweep of starred reviews and awards sets up One by One to be a most anticipated thriller of 2020."
--Library Journal "Read this back to back with Christie's And Then There Were None, and you will witness the evolution of a literary form over the space of eight decades as Ware proves she's more than deserving of all those comparisons to the Queen of Crime."
--BookPage "A gripping thriller that shows how toxic workplace culture can get and will keep you guessing through the very last page."

I love Ruth Ware’s books but this one took a little bit for me to get into. If you’re struggling, keep reading because I promise it will be worth it! It’s definitely a whodunnit book and when you figure out who it is, you can’t wait to see how the rest unfolds! Definitely not my favorite book by Ruth Ware but very much worth reading!

When the key employees of the internet startup Snoop show up at a chalet in the French Alps, they are expecting a week of presentations and skiing. However, there is tension brewing just below the surface thanks to a buyout deal that has split the board. The tension only grows worse when heavy snow and an avalanche cuts everyone off from the rest of the world and one of the members of a group goes missing somewhere out in the snow. As the hours pass, it becomes clear a killer is in the group. Will help arrive before they are all dead? While the cast of isolated characters trope is not new to the mystery genre, Ruth Ware quickly makes it her own in this page turning thriller. I love how she so successfully isolated the characters. The plot is wonderful with tension rising early before the characters fully realize the danger they are in. The twists kept me engaged the entire way through the nail-biting climax. The characters could have been a little stronger overall. Don’t get me wrong, I cared about them and the outcome, but I felt like many of them stayed two dimensional and those we got to know better bordered on the cliché. Being a thriller, I expected more foul language than in the books I typically read, but it was a bit excessive for my tastes. Still, these are nitpicks in an overall wonderful thriller.

I’m a big Ruth Ware fan and she has thrown me for a loop with past reads but, this one was predictable from the start. There was plenty of alluding to the culprit’s past hardships endured and why the triggers occurred but, barely any context or closure there...in fact it was a bit scattered between abuse at home and bullying outside of it. No elaboration just touch and go glimpses of the past. For me it felt a bit open ended and a more gradual, strung out reveal than I’m accustomed to with these sort of books. I’ll say what was intended to be the big bombshell was predictable there was plenty of intrigue and sprinkles of surprises to keep me interested.

This is definitely no Agatha Christie Novel. From the very beginning it was very predictable and was definitely missing the Wow effect. My daughter really liked it but for me it was just meh
Would have been a 5 if I couldn’t predict..

And Then There Were None + The Guest List 10 current/former employees of a booming UK music app startup (for those of you from the States, think Silicon Valley yuppies) decide to take a holiday at a French chalet to make the biggest decision of their lives. When an avalanche hits, they and the two workers start to see what lies in the heart of (wo)men.. I enjoyed this book. It’s my first Ruth Ware (and won’t be my last). What would have made it a 5-star for me was structuring the book a bit differently so that it wasn’t obvious from before the halfway point “whodunit.” I don’t want to say much more than that for spoilers, but I think you’ll see when you get there. I did love the way she fleshed out the characters, and the way she opened each chapters. Buy this for yourself or someone looking for a no -so-cozy mystery. If you’re twisted, get it for someone about to go on their first ski trip.
