Paper Marbling Kit - Mondo Llama™: DIY Art Kit with Marbling Supplies & Marble Painting Tools

Please note this is not a quick craft and is probably better suited to older kids. My 6 year old was excited to start it. First step is to create the solution which you need to let sit for an hour (or more for better results) before you begin the paint process. There’s also other items in the box that the instructions have no info on what to use them for.

So I was interested in learning paper marbling and discovered this kit around the same time. It was on clearance at my store so that was a bonus! If you're interested in getting this there are some things you should know, though. First of all, the instructions are really bad. They're not written well and it seems like a lot of people are missing the section about how to measure the powder - there is an illustration with the included spoon but the measurement capacity of the spoon is at the bottom in smaller print. I don't know why the instructions would ask you to mix the water and powder for ten minutes with a stylus when you can just put the cap on and shake it for a bit. Also, if you don't know how to create designs with the included tools, the directions do not help at all. There's nothing about how to use the tools to achieve the actual techniques. However! On the internet archive there is a book called Marbling Techniques and I looked at that and it was super helpful in terms of how to use the tools to achieve patterns like the Nonpareil. These kinds of things should really be included in the instructions, though. Pull the paper up after five seconds or else your color may start to bleed. If you want to do this with kids, it's quite time-consuming so keep that in mind. It's obviously not as time-consuming as actual paper marbling, but it takes an hour for the water to set up and the drying time for the paper for me was very long - some of them dried okay but most of them were still wet the following day. The sizing will pool on top of some of the paper (or run off if it is not on a flat surface!) so be careful with where you are drying them. The good thing about it is you can pull one sheet and then use the same water bath over and over again as long as you have drying space. I will probably have to press them after they finish drying because there is some warping. I do not know whether this is ink or paint but I got some on the counter and what wound up being able to take it off was a magic eraser. I did mix the red and blue to make purple but it's a pretty muddy purple.

I agree with other reviewers that the instructions were not clear, and in addition the alum chemical powder was not labeled and there was no information about proper disposal. It sounds like it’s not safe for waterways. I also wonder if this was the correct use, since other instructions for marbling say that the alum is a treatment to coat the paper rather than a thickening agent for the liquid bed. Of course, I have no idea if this is even the same chemical since the only clue that it might be alum was a text circle on the box. Also, the combs were ineffective since the teeth are so wide. If there was a laser cut design that required assembly so that the comb teeth were rotated 90deg, you could have it create fine patterns rather than just turbulence. It would also give you something to do in the hour spent waiting for the solution to dissolve. I would have appreciated better instructions, a different comb, and a label on the bottle, so that you don’t have something that looks like a water bottle and contains a mystery chemical sitting around the kitchen while you wait for it to be ready.

My 7 year old daughter and son LOVES this kit and I do too! I love it because it isn’t messy and easy to clean up. The kids love it because it’s just a fun and cool project!

Seriously so cool!! My daughter loved doing this! She made all these papers and still has plenty of supplies left to make more another day. It was so cool the way it worked and she loved making different designs. Heads up, when you first get started you need to mix 2 ingredients and then wait an hour, so plan ahead!

My niece (7) loves this kit as much as I do!! It works very well but it’s not as much of a tye dye pattern but she lives the designs that we made together! The only negative if we’ve used this twice and the paint is almost gone, I wish it came with bigger bottles of paint.

My daughter and her friends used this kit at her slumber party. They enjoyed it and it occupied them for while. If you have a child that likes art or tryin different medias, this may be something they enjoy.

Idea is really cool, I like that it contains multiple trials inside. However, I feel like it’s more for older kids like 10 and up maybe? The instructions are really unclean, and even I had trouble getting the paint to drop out and you have to be very sparing with the paint to make sure it isn’t a muddy mess. I did it with my toddler and she had fun but it definitely was a huge mess and she wasn’t super thrilled with the results since the paint has to be placed so daintily. I tried it after she was done and even I had trouble making it turn out how I want. Maybe it’s something you need to do a bunch of times to get the hang of but by then we would be out of supplies.

The directions are not good so make sure you read them over and don’t just have your kids read them. They used the entire powder solution and then have a bunch of leftover supplies and can’t use them since they used all of the solution. It says “add THE 2.5g powder” it should say “add 2.5g of powder” way at the bottom of the page it says the spoon is 1 gram. The directions should say to use the spoon and measure. The results were nice but now we can’t use it again with the leftover supplies.

There are twenty sheets of watercolor paper, five colors of ink, blue, green, orange, yellow and red, two combs, two droppers, needle, spoon, plastic tray, bottle and powder. I am not very skilled at arts and crafts so this was perfect for us to do together. The instructions were very clear, and the steps were easy to follow. The tray it comes with helps to keep the mess contained as much as possible. It was fun for both of us.
