Emotion story of God’s grace

5 out of 5 stars

The story of Rahab has always been one of my favorites. How amazing that God would chose a woman from a different land, religion, and unworthy vocation, and save her, protect her, and welcome her to live with His chosen people and gift her with a place in the lineage of Jesus. Tessa Afshar brings Rahab to life in this stunning and emotional story of how God reaches out to us in the midst of our messes to pull us out and make us brand new. I gained a new understanding of just how precious we are to Him. *Disclaimer - I recieved a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. A positive review was not required. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Stunning Biblical Fiction!

5 out of 5 stars
Connie Saunders - 4 years ago
Pearl in the Sand is a stunning account of Rahab's path to finding true love with her husband Salmone and her journey from being a zonah (harlot) to becoming a redeemed child of God and part of the lineage of Jesus Christ. Along with this poignantly beautiful narrative, Afshar also includes the thrilling account of Rahab's interaction with the Hebrew spies and her family being spared during the fall of Jericho! This book is a wonderful testament to God's ability to change the lives of His children and it is a story with compelling characters and the deep spiritual message of hope, healing, and forgiveness. Pearl in the Sand has become one of my all-time favorite reads and I highly recommend it to all who enjoy biblical fiction. I also believe that Rahab's story should be shared with women who have experienced abuse and rejection in their own lives. They need to know that God can heal all of their hurts! I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was absolutely no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.

Beautiful and compelling story of love and redemption

5 out of 5 stars
Tina at Mommynificent - 4 years ago
I could have sworn I had read this book, and I was really excited about it having a 10th anniversary re-release so I signed up to be on the launch team and received a beautiful complimentary paperback copy from the publisher about a week before the re-release. Imagine my surprise when I started what I thought would be a quick re-read and realized I had either never read this book before or I had completely forgotten it! I was quickly immersed in a beautiful and compelling story of love and redemption, and I really enjoyed it! I absolutely loved how Mrs. Afshar imagined Rahab and Salmone and even their family members. I loved how she portrayed the way Rahab was drawn to the God of Israel and repelled by the gods of her own people. And I loved how her family was so wholehearted in their turning from their old gods to fully worshipping the God of Israel! My one complaint about this book is a complaint I also have about most English translations of the Bible so Mrs. Afshar is in good company. The substitution of the phrase "the Lord" in place of God's name is a big deal to me and I found it was distracting, didn't make a lot of sense, and took away significantly from my enjoyment of the story. While I personally use the name Yahweh, I don't really mind what name authors and translators choose, so long as it's a name and not a common noun that they try to turn into a name by capitalizing it. So I would have been fine with Jehovah, Yahuah, Yah, or any other variation - it just needs to be an actual name when the character is naming the god they worship. It doesn't make sense when they try to use "the Lord" as His Name, especially when, as in this book, they use the uncapitalized term "lord" to refer to their husband, a tribal leader, and even pagan gods who are "lords" worshipped by the pagans. It drives me batty that authors are willing to use the names of pagan gods like Molech and Ba'al, both of whom were mentioned in this book quite a lot (and both of whom have names with variable spellings) but are then unwilling to use an actual name for the God of Israel! If this book had taken place after the Babylonian captivity when the Jews starting making this substitution, I would not have found it so frustrating because it would have been historically accurate, but in this context, I thought it really took away from the clarity and power of the story as well as being historically inaccurate. It was a big deal when Canaanites switched allegiance from their old "lords" to a new One, and knowing a god's name was an important and necessary part of being able to worship. Please forgive my long rant, but I felt I needed to explain this frustration I had with this book in order for my review to be truthful and just, especially since I decided not to take away a star from my rating and to go ahead and give it 5-stars. It really is a 5-star book for most readers. The fact that I had to treat reading it as a bit of a code and substitute "Yahweh" in my head every time a character was obviously referring to Him by name in the context of the conversation for it to make sense to me will probably not be a deal-breaker for very many other people. So, in the end, I do highly recommend this book, and I know lovers of Biblical fiction will continue to rave about it for years to come!

Beautiful New Edition for a Beautiful, Timeless Story

5 out of 5 stars
I was so excited when I heard that Pearl in the Sand by Tessa Afshar was getting an update. It's such a beautiful story (both inside and outside, but I'll get to that in a bit), and it's such a pivotal book in terms of the history of the genre of Biblical fiction. I really thought it deserved a new cover and some "new" hype for the story. First, let's talk about the OUTSIDE of this book: I love the new cover! It keeps some of the same striking details about the original edition like the bright blue hues, the dramatic red cord, and the intense gaze of the cover model that sets the mood and tone for the book, but brings it to life in a new way that is eye-catching, stunning, and yet simple and beautiful. The whole cover image combined makes me think of "the calm before the storm," and it's gorgeous. I also love the rose gold foil detail in the paperback copy, which is hard to capture on camera in all of it's glory, but let me just say, it makes the outside of this book shine as much as the story within its pages. Now, let's talk about the inside (AKA, the story): Rahab is one of the most oft-retold stories in the genre of Biblical fiction, so it's easy to see why someone might be skeptical to pick up this rendition, but I must say that Afshar brings something beautiful and fresh to the story. The book is full of well-researched world-building that brings the Biblical book of Joshua to life, and Afshar's captivating characters round out the novel and its message into something truly transformative. And-without giving spoilers-that scene? *That scene* that gives this book its title? Still gives me chills. I also loved the addition of the 2020 updated "A Note from the Author" which brings a little more incite into how this novel was written, and what kind of an impact its had since its initial release since 2010. The full-color chapter headers (or "interior decorating" of the book, as I like to say) are also a fun detail that makes the reading experience that much more enjoyable. This is an amazing edition that you absolutely want to have on your shelf. I would highly recommend this book to newcomers to the BF genre, as well as those that have been here a long time. It's easy to see why Afshar has become such a staple in the Biblical fiction community, and has been now for over ten years. I would even go so far as to say that this book is to Biblical fiction what Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers is to Christian Fiction/Christian historical romance. *I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.

One of the Best Biblical Fiction Novels

5 out of 5 stars
Jan Kathryn - 4 years ago
10 years ago I was recommended this book from a friend and it was one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. Since then I have read it multiple times over. Tessa Afshar is now one of the only Christian authors I read these days. The Pearl in the Sand 10th Anniversary includes new scenes, edits, and another beautiful cover. Yes, there may be changes but it still remains a beautiful biblical fiction book about Rahab. There are so many things about this book that I enjoy (chemistry between the characters, wit, humor, beauty and much more). As you read through the book you see the character development with Rahab. Tessa has a way of describing things that make it easy to relate to the characters and you get drawn into the book because of that. Tessa also does a great job going through the story of Rahab of where she came from (a harlot) to marrying a prominent aristocrat leader, Salmone. There is so many spiritual revelations and realities intertwined in this book that you discover. I enjoy how authentic the relationship with the Lord is and how He reveals himself to the characters (& ultimately to us). I sincerely recommend this Christian biblical fiction book to anyone! Biblical Fiction at its Finest

5 out of 5 stars
hmkstories - 5 years ago
Rahab is shrouded in loneliness and guilt. Sold by her father at the age of fifteen, hers has been a life of hardship and shame. The Canaanite gods offer her no comfort—silent and greedy, they take and take but offer no hope, no future. When word reaches Jericho of a ragtag nomad group called the Hebrews whose God miraculously delivered them from slavery, Rahab is intrigued. As the Hebrews approach, conquering all in their path, her countrymen panic, but Rahab experiences a searing desire to be a part of this people whose God is one of power, mercy, and compassion. And then the unthinkable happens—she encounters two Hebrew spies in the city and instinctually decides to harbor them. The rest, they say, is history. Rahab’s story is one that most are familiar with: the harlot who shelters two Hebrew spies and is spared—later to become a part of God’s people and even an ancestor to Jesus Christ. This fictional account of Rahab’s story explores the dynamics of a former harlot marrying a prominent Hebrew man. What restoration must have occurred to make this marriage thrive? The author exquisitely captures the redemptive work in not only Rahab’s heart but also in the heart of her eventual husband, Salmone. I absolutely loved the imagery that was present throughout the novel: the scarlet cord, the pearl earring, the deadly snake, Jericho’s walls—all tangible elements tied to deeper spiritual truths. I also loved how the author was careful to craft the marriage relationship so that it wasn’t one-sided. BOTH Salmone and Rahab needed work done in their hearts in order for the marriage to be a success. The pacing was also excellent—nothing felt rushed but unfolded naturally over time. The wins were hard-won and realistic. I liked that a good portion of the book took place after the marriage, showing that a committed relationship is not easy and takes sacrifice and a dogged pursuit of the other. Beyond the main relationship between Salmone and Rahab, there were many solid side characters who were compelling in their own right. Rahab’s sister Izzie’s gnawing guilt over offering up her son to Molech was heart-rending and the entire family’s agonizing decision to join the Hebrew camp was also well done. The book came full circle when, at the end, Rahab reconnects with and forgives her father for his egregious sin against her. Each relationship felt raw and honest and added to the overall appeal of the story. In Pearl in the Sand, the author delves deep into the hidden places of the heart and explores the theme of our value and infinite worth in the eyes of our loving Creator God. This book is hope-filled and riveting and will stir your affection for the Lord. A big thanks to the author and Moody Publishers for the opportunity to read this book for review! All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

What a powerful fictional retelling of the true Biblical story of Rahab! I first read this book ten years ago after its original publication, but when I saw that it was being rereleased for its tenth anniversary, I knew I had to read it again! I love this fictional Rahab. Her character comes alive for me in this story and I find myself really getting to know her heart and her personality. I connected with Rahab and was invested in her story. The setting was well written such that the author was able to transport me to Jericho. I liked the flow of the storyline and the romance intertwined in the novel. And, of course, the Biblical truths of trusting God and learning to forgive were well integrated and easily applicable to my own life. Tessa Afshar pens some of the best Biblical fiction novels and is a very talented writer! I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Beauty in the Binding - 5 years ago
Ten years ago, Pearl in the Sand made it into my top five books of the year. It is going to land there again this year. The 10th Anniversary edition of Pearl in the Sand includes a striking new cover, additional scenes, and book-wide edits, but the heart of this amazing story remains the same. Pearl in the Sand immediately captivated my attention with Rehab’s character. She is intelligent, beautiful, witty, and loyal. Yet, she is so broken – spiritually, emotionally, sexually. Her character growth flows through the story and culminates with a deep healing. The spiritual truths embedded in the narrative touched my heart as I watched Rehab absorb them. Opposite Rehab is Salmone, a classic male lead, who proves to be heroic, romantic, and flawed. As Salmone learns to be who Rehab needs him to be, he creates a safe place for her to heal and flourish. A top-notch love story! With its combination of powerful themes, dynamic characters, sparking romance, and spiritual truths, I can wholeheartedly recommend Pearl in the Sand to Christian fiction readers. I marked many passages to reread and savor after finishing the story. Five stars! Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. Sunnie Reviews - 5 years ago
Ancient history comes to life in this moving story by Tessa Afshar. It was so captivating how this book brought Biblical people into an understandable position, showing they had strengths and shortcomings. Although I have read the Bible on numerous occasions, it is sometimes hard to think of these people as we see ourselves and that they have the same feelings we have because they lived so long ago. And that they fought wars, and felt the pain of their family members as they left to battle and felt the heartbreak of sin. As Rahab struggles with her past, we see and feel the feelings that both she and Salmone have as he tries to accept her and finds himself falling in love with someone with a past that is not acceptable to him or his people. How will he overcome these feelings? We read of others who do not accept her and find her unworthy and that she also sees herself as unworthy. She learns an important and life changing lesson of the pearl in the sand. We can also learn personal life lessons in this book which teaches us that self forgiveness is a most important part of our healing process. I really enjoyed this well-written Biblical period book. It's a book that has no dull moments and is totally engaging. Written about the Battle of Jericho, we find a true heroine. Sunnie Reviews received a book to facilitate this review. Romance and Redemption

How could a woman of ill repute find faith in the God of Israel, and by His great providence and grace, be counted in the lineage of Jesus? It is a miracle that only God could conceive! Tessa Afshar expertly weaves historical and Biblical truth into a beautifully imagined account of Rahab the harlot. I found myself staying up late to keep re-reading the sweet love story between Salmone and Rahab. And seeing the transformation of them both under the hand of an infinitely loving and forgiving God. I highly recommend this book! I was an early reader, thanks to Moody Publishers. All opinions are my own.

Gorgeous, captivating, soul-touching story!

Cover Lover - 5 years ago
Oh, how I love to actually LIVE inside a story. A Pearl in the Sand is a gorgeous, captivating, soul-touching story based on the Biblical story of Rahab. I will miss these characters and the many emotions they put me through! Biblical fiction breathes a new kind of life to the Bible stories I’ve read since youth. It’s so evident that great care was taken to be historically accurate with customs and beliefs and yet, the fictional aspects don’t take away an ounce of the original story’s wonder. In this story of love, faith, forgiveness, and redemption, Rahab and Salmone put me through the wringer. I was sympathetic to all Rahab had to overcome, in awe of Joshua’s leadership and Miriam’s strength, and appalled at Rahab’s father’s errors. And then there’s Salmone, who may have undergone the deepest transformation. He pierced my heart in oh so many places. And don’t miss the sweet treat discovered in the epilogue. It’s so meaningful and gave me chills. All. The. Feels. I’ve read several of Tessa Afshar’s stories, and though difficult to pick a favorite, this is certainly one of my favorites. And the part in the book when I realized the true significance of the pearl…oh my. Every aspect of this book is spectacular, right down to the dedication page. The writing is strong and effective, the characters are believable and easy to connect with, the history transported me, and I experienced emotions in Biblical proportions. #CoverLove #2020Favorite #PearlintheSand #ReadTessaAfshar I received an advanced copy of this 10th anniversary book from the publisher. Captivating historical fiction

5 out of 5 stars

Tessa Afshar and Moody Publishers just released the 10th Anniversary Edition of Pearl in the Sand. Not having read the first edition but having read several of Afshar's books, I was looking forward to reading Pearl in the Sand. I was not disappointed at all. It is a marvelously written historical novel about the woman, Rahab, whose story can be found in the Old Testament book of Joshua from the Bible. The characters are strong, multifaceted, and evocative, and watching their relationships develop and evolve is engaging. I loved how the author portrayed Salmone as a man who truly knew how to love a woman. Threaded throughout the story, readers will find rich historical details, adventure, tension-filled scenes, and some sweet romance. Pearl in the Sand is a captivating story that realistically shows the emotions and the hard life of this woman of the Scriptures. Afshar tastefully covers the shameful life of Rahab, a Canaanite harlot, the humiliation and isolation she must've endured while keeping the reader's attention with dynamic dialogue and a story that flows well. Pearl in the Sand is a story of finding redemption and one's worth in God's sight. It is a story of finding true love and forgiveness amidst a life of brokenness and guilt. It is a story you do not want to miss. I was given a complimentary copy of the book by the publisher and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
