Description

Book Synopsis

In a provocative study that bristles with contemporary relevance, Himmelfarb demonstrates that the material and moral dimensions of poverty were inseparable in the minds of late Victorians, be they radical or conservative.

From the Back Cover

This is a source book for anyone trying to think about how to make a difference in inner-city America. It is a story of reformers and ideas, of the Salvation Army and the Fabian Society, of high idealism and moral chivalry coupled with naivete and roaring eccentricity.

Review Quotes

"A monumental achievement. "--Wall Street Journal
