Q: When it says "assembly required," what needs to be assembled? Is the headboard a single unit that needs to be attached to a metal frame, or is the headboard shipped in pieces and needs to be 'assembled"?

A: The legs of the actual headboard have to be attached to the top of the headboard. Then you would need to attached the complete headboard to your metal frame.
