I have anticipated this book for quite some time now. There was a promotional blurb in the back of Amanda's last book. It stopped with a bit of a cliff hanger It left me with the feeling that this was going to be a wonderful read and that assumption was correct. The story itself revolves around three women, a mother, a daughter, and a granddaughter. Much of their life's work has centered around the Old Depot Grocery. But times are changing and forcing the women to change as well. The women are connected by birth but there is something else that connects them. They each hold a secret that is slowly destroying them and their relationships with each other. So much heartbreak over things that could be solved if they would each come clean. I loved this book and have quickly become a fan of Amanda Cox. She has a beautiful writing style that makes the pages just fly by. I highly recommend this book as well as her previous works. I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

I could not put this book down until I read the last page. It was such a wonderful dual time story that had my emotions all over the place. The first thing I noticed was the cover. It screams of the days when soda shoppes were popular and family stores were prospering. The author does an excellent job of combining time periods together to create a journey of secrets, loss, family and unconditional love. It is hard to pick out which time period I enjoyed more. When we are introduced to Glory Ann, I loved reading about her first love and how happy she was if only for a brief period. The author talks about the Vietnam War and the tragedy that families faced as they received news of the death of loved ones. Glory Ann was broken into pieces when the love of her life was killed in the war. I was quite upset when her parents were more worried about their standing in the community than what their daughter was going thru. When we travel to the present we are introduced to Rosemary and Sarah. I loved the dynamics between these two characters. They both have suffered loss but there is a strain between them. The store brings them back together as decisions need to be made that will upset Sarah’s grandmother. There is much between these three generations with secrets that will have lasting affects on everyone. The emotions are felt deep within the soul as we travel from a marriage of convenience, the Vietnam War, unexpected pregnancies and family history that holds the key to long hidden secrets. I appreciate the author highlighting what soldiers experience in the war and how an idea is formed to help those coming hone. I don’t want to give anything away, because like me I’m sure readers want to experience everything first hand as they open the pages of this book. With hard days ahead for one young couple we see the imprint it left on the family generation after generation. It was almost like the three women had similar lives but slightly different in how they handled their problems. The best part of the book for me was the brokenness that was felt as these three women face their past and repair family relationships. I received a copy of this book from Revell Reads Blogging Program. The review is my own opinion.

The Secret Keepers of the Old Depot Grocery is a heartwarming story. It is a duel timeline story. Featuring present day Sarah who returns to her childhood home to work in the family business which unfortunately is closing. Sarah must work to help save the store. Flashback to 1965 when Sarah‘s grandmother, Glory Ann reveals she is pregnant with her late fiancé‘s baby. So many facets of family relationships and dynamics featured in The Secret Keepers of the Old Depot Grocery. The Secret Keepers of the Old Depot Grocery is entertaining and captivating. You will not want to put it down! Flashing back-and-forth in the timeline keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. I thoroughly enjoyed The Secret Keepers of the Old Depot Grocery. I was given a free copy from the publisher for my honest review which I was happy to do. I enjoyed reading The Secret Keepers of the Old Depot Grocery and highly recommend.

" . . . when I was little, I used to imagine that the creaking floors could talk. That they knew all the stories of the people who walked them . . . if I could just learn their secret language, those wood floors could tell me everything." For generations the walls, floorboards, and shelves of the Old Depot Grocery held its secrets close to the heart; living, loving, losing . . . clearly too late for a resurrection . . or perhaps not? Sarah Ashby seemed to think so, returning home after her own loss, she hoped to revive the store of her childhood while discovering new meaning for her own life in the process. But some things never changed, and it soon became apparent that her mother and her grandmother were fiercely at odds over what to do with a store that was not only losing its luster, but most of its customers. Years earlier, Glory Ann had not been given many choices for her future after confessing that she bore a child whose father who would never return home from Vietnam. Whisked away by her father, "Glory Ann Hawthorne became Mrs. Clarence Clearwater, all to cover up a secret she was not ashamed of". . . . . the simple ceremony taking place in the back room of the Old Depot Grocery. Maybe all these elusive complications needed a new perspective, God's perspective. . . . Sarah's gentle confidante reminding her to ,"take the first step that feels right and see what happens next, . . . I think that's how God works in our lives a lot of times. He doesn't give us the whole picture. He gives us that one step". For if the truth ever needed to be told, it was among the "secret keepers of the Old Depot Grocery" . . . for it would undoubtedly set them free. Wonderful book by an emerging masterful storyteller!

Three generations. Three women. All with secrets and a stubborn will to keep them buried...the question is, don't they know things hidden in the dark often come into the light? The cover of The Secrets of Old Depot Grocery is captivating and represents the story well. While the story is a work of fiction the idea behind it came from Old Depot, a store that the author's maternal grandparents owned when she was a child. Amanda Cox has written an emotional story with complex dynamics. Presented in a dual-time format that is expertly crafted, the author weaves a tale that started in 1965. I have read and enjoyed quite a few dual-timeline books, but none have flowed as smoothly as this one does. This story will pull on your heartstrings as you follow Glory Ann, Rosemary, and Sarah through the story. You will see the effects that keeping secrets had on their lives and the way it eroded relationships. Family dynamics are often complex and rarely do you see the whole story. This novel is a testament to that. This story is so realistically written that it could be my story or yours. The story has you wrestling with several potential outcomes and you wonder if the secrets are revealed if they will heal the hurt or push it deeper? I think fans of historical fiction and contemporary fiction will enjoy this novel. There is so much depth and so much to be explored that I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories with complex family dynamics. Thank you to Revell and the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

I was deeply impressed with this author's debut novel, and after reading this book, my admiration has only increased! Author Amanda Cox has created a powerful tale that brings back so many memories and evokes so many emotions of my childhood; even the book cover reminds me of the grocery stores in my Kentucky hometown. Cox introduces us to three women in this dual-time novel that spans 60 years, and we can see how our society has changed from 1965 to today. There is romance in The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery, but what makes this book so special is the love between three generations of women. I loved the bond between Glory Ann and her granddaughter Sarah as they joined together to thwart the closing of the Old Depot Grocery, but I could also sympathize with Rosemary's desire to see it close. We witness so many facets in both of these mother/daughter relationships: Glory Ann and daughter Rosemary, and Rosemary and her daughter Sarah, and then, the very special ties between Glory Ann and Sarah. Cox vividly portrays all of the family dynamics, including pain, loss, multiple secrets, and eventually, joy and triumph! The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery is a heartwarming story with amazing characters, an intriguing plot, and the poignant reminder that truth truly does set us free. I highly recommend The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery, but be prepared to shed some tears! I received a copy of this book from Revell. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.
A DYNAMIC AND ENTERTAINING BOOK!

So many things attracted me to this book; the cover, the title, the back cover blurb and the author’s reputation for good books! I must say I was not disappointed! I loved this book! This story spans a period of 60 years in the lives of 3 generations of women. The old saying, “Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.” came to my mind as I read. It holds true in these 3 women’s lives because when we are dishonest in any situation, we open the door to problems that will eventually be out of our control. Each of these women was not deceitful by nature, but through circumstances beyond their control felt hiding their secrets would be less painful for those they loved. The Old Depot Grocery had been the center of the family’s life since 1965 when Glory married the owner Clarence, a man 10 years her senior. The marriage didn’t start out as a traditional one for sure, but through the years grew strong in affection and respect. After her husband died she continued to run the store that she saw as a life blood to her family and community. After 56 years it was becoming a burden with the new grocery store in town taking most of its customers. Although she was in her 80’s she was determined to keep it going. She has secrets from her past that drive her on. Her daughter, Rosemary, who grew up in the store has other plans. She wants the store sold and her mother’s last years to be those of ease. Tempers flare and heads butt as they disagree. Her mother’s future isn’t the only reason she wants to sell. She holds many secrets in her heart that have been hidden for many years. Enter Sarah, daughter and granddaughter. She has just lost her husband in an accident and comes home in hope of support and healing. She gets caught in the crossfire of her family and while seeing both sides she has her opinions and even plans. Sarah has her own secrets she holds close. As the three women once again live in close proximity, their secrecy gives way to a slippery slope of emotions and events that reveal what none of them felt would ever come to light. I saw so many deep lessons as I read. Shame and fear of upsetting others involved are never motives to hide the truth. It hurts far more to find out one was betrayed than to face the pain of facts. The longer one conceals secrets, the more complicated they become and the harder it is to come clean. I also saw how forgiving yourself is often more difficult than forgiving another. I couldn’t put the book down! There are so many surprises along the way! It was incredible to view all three lives and see what the other ones could not see. A dynamic and entertaining book! I received this book from Revell in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

If you've read Amanda Cox's first novel, The Edge of Belonging, you know what a wonderful writer she is. Not shying away from her characters' hurt and pain, she digs deep into their hearts and souls, deep into their heartbreak and the pain of loss. She examines their mistakes and skillfully pulls them through the consequences. Her captivating style of weaving words to tell stories makes it impossible for me to put her books down before I've reached the end. The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery broke my heart and buoyed it at the same time. It's a beautiful story of family secrets and so much more.

Three generations of secrets, and heartache, and hope. What a beautiful sophomore novel by Author Amanda Cox! I will long remember Glory Ann, Rosemary, and Sarah, three generations of women trying to keep the Old Depot Grocery going through the years despite secrets and heartache. Wonderful secondary characters, the generous and loving Clarence Clearwater, Bo Anderson, and Clay, and the depot itself also has a story all its own. Beautiful women's fiction! I enjoyed the growth that these women experienced over the course of the story. So many wonderful quotes! Here are a few of my favorites: "It's not about chasing what's bigger or better. It's about who can stick it out when all seems lost." "It was a double-edged sword, this life of hers. Loving the blessings she had, sometimes still aching for what couldn't be.' "We can't go back and edit our lives, thinking we could've avoided the loss. Loss is part of living." "The credit I extend is between me and my customers and is never to be thrown in that family's face. Do you understand me? We don't give and then lord it over people..." "Maybe you feel invisible, but I see you, Rosemary Clearwater." "Because you are drawn to the way the stories of the past help you make sense of the future." I highly recommend The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery by Amanda Cox. Thank you to the author, and publisher (Revell) for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.

After reading and loving Amanda's debut novel last year, this one was high on my priority read list for this year. Trust me when I say, this one is even better than "The Edge Of Belonging" and that one was superb. "The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery" is a beautiful story of hope, redemption and family. I couldn't read this one fast enough! The ending was lovely and the story is one I devoured. I purchased an audible copy and the narration was very good. This will definitely make my top 2021 read list no question. It's destined for my keeper shelf. I received this book from the publisher(while purchasing my audible copy) and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery by Amanda Cox is the author’s second novel. I absolutely LOVED The Edge of Belonging and couldn’t wait to read this novel. The author is spectacular at taking ordinary, yet painful, situations and turning them into a beautiful journey of learning and healing. The Old Depot’s story is no different. I absolutely loved this cast of characters and following their flawed stories. Can we talk about Clarence for a minute? The man was a giant, and yet he was the biggest teddy bear. The love that grew inside his heart is the kind we all wish to receive in our lives. He didn’t keep a single shred to himself. He cared for his whole community and raised his family to do the same. I fell in love with him as he and Glory Ann learned to make a family from their non-traditional marriage. I could hear his calm voice in my head. Be prepared to find a new kind of hero. Truthfully, I loved all the characters in this story. The broken relationships between mother and daughter were challenging and frustrating but oh so true to real life. All the secrets kept. All the hurt hidden. It is a reminder that the truth really does set us free: from guilt, from hurt, from loss. This was a fantastic story all around. I would recommend this to any Christian fiction/Christian women’s fiction fans. Truthfully, I’d recommend it to anyone because I think it’s message will resonate with so many. Do not miss this story! It is a must-read for me. I was given a copy of the book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions are my own.

Wow, what a great story by Amanda Cox! I'm pretty stingy with my five-star ratings but The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery definitely deserves it. This story had me turning the pages from the very beginning, eager to see what would happen next in both the present day and historical timeframes. As a southern girl myself, I loved the setting in rural Tennessee and felt right at home with the characters' personalities, dialect, and familiar phrases. They came across as real and complex people with a load of baggage, just like most of us. I love stories with depth and a spiritual challenge, which this novel delivers. The author expertly weaves the theme of how secrets steal from us, but the power of honesty brings relational healing. The truths of this story will stay with me for a long time. I can't recommend this read enough.

This is the second book that Amanda Cox has written and the second by her that I have read. I had high hopes and expectations when I started reading this novel and I was not disappointed at all. It is a split-time novel which means that part of the book is set in the past and part is set in the present. I like how the author clearly marks which time period the chapter is set in so the reader does not get confused. The book centers around three generations of women from the same family. I feel like at minimum there is one thing about at least one of the women that most women can relate though it will not be the same thing for each woman. I found this story to be so compelling and heartwarmingly good that it was hard to put down. Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in order to give an honest review.
A poignant, generational tale!

The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery by Amanda Cox involves three generations of Clearwater women. I thought the story was well-written with realistic, developed characters. It is a dual-timeline novel that is told from Glory Ann, Sarah, and Rosemary’s point-of-view. The story revolves the family grocery store began by Clarence Clearwater, Glory Ann’s husband. Each woman is at the Old Depot for a different reason. They have secrets that come to light over the course of the book. There is misunderstandings and miscommunications that do not help these ladies’ relationships. There are good life lessons presented in this generational saga. Forgiveness of others and oneself is the first one and the second one is that God is in control. We can worry, manipulate, scheme, and plan. In the end, it is best to leave it in God’s hands because His plans are the ones that will happen in the end. I liked that there was hope in the story. A person may be going through a tough time or grieving, but there was still hope to help get them through. I enjoyed the epilogue that nicely wrapped up this emotional, thought-provoking tale. There is something for each reader in this Southern story. The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery is a story that will linger with you long after you finish it.

In a small southern town in the 1960’s an unmarried girl, Glory Ann, finds herself pregnant after learning the father has been killed in Vietnam. Her parent's solution is to take her to another small town's grocery store and introduce her to the owner, Clarence. She is shocked when her dad then tells her he has arranged for her to marry Clarence, and it will be done right that minute. Can she do that, and what will become of her life? Fast forward a few years to Rosemary, Glory Ann’s daughter, who has grown up helping in her parent’s business. She has a strategy to get far away from her small town, make something of herself and see the world. That is the plan until one bad choice causes all her dreams to come crashing down. In the present day, Sarah, daughter of Rosemary, and granddaughter of Glory Ann, feels like her life has just plummeted down. Unbelievably, the night she was leaving her lonely marriage, her indifferent husband dies. She believes returning to her hometown, and helping her grandmother with her business will bring her the healing she needs. Unfortunately, her mom is constantly pushing her to leave. Then Sarah is shocked to discover yet another life change is going to happen to her. Three different stories and time-lines all weave together to make an amazing dual-time tale. One over-riding connection between the three women is keeping secrets and how that hurts them, along with those they love. When Sarah, with the help of handsome Clay, starts unraveling the secrets, all their lives change. Just when you think you know how it will end, the tale takes another turn. I loved this five-star book, and you will, too. The story is a real page turner, and the surprising situations will grab your interest from the first. Clean and told from a Christian view point, I highly recommend this to fans of excellent story- telling with suspense. Revell Books has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery, for the purpose of review.

This book was given to me to read and give my unbiased, honest review and here it is. I have enjoyed every book by Amanda Cox and this one is near the top of the list. She had merged yesterday's problems and secrets with today's problems and secrets in a very interesting way. The story goes back and forth in time to explain what is going on in these 3 generations of women's lives. It starts with the grandmother and goes through her granddaughter's early 20s. The story is mostly told from the view of the grandmother and granddaughter, but the daughter/mother has her times also. It is a Christian book and shows how faith and the lack of faith affect us. It also shows what happens when some secrets are kept or kept too long. I really enjoyed the book. It ended in a way that a second book could happen but doesn't have to. I would recommend this book. Very well written and edited.

This is the story of three generations of women who are each hiding secrets about their pasts. Glory Ann, Rosemary and Sarah have to come to the place of accepting the past and forgiving themselves so that they can move on to a brighter future. I really enjoyed the story, the lessons it taught and the interactions between the three women. The plot was beautifully written so that the secrets were revealed at just the right pace, and the characters were completely realistic.

The title of this book is very appropriate. The book centers around three generations of women, each harboring their own secret. The setting is a family owned grocery in a small town in Tennessee. The chapters vacillate between the different time periods of each woman, including the present day where their lives interconnect. Sarah, the youngest of the three women, makes a discovery revealing a part of her grandmother’s secret and sets about discovering the truth of what she found. The author, Amanda Cox, is really good at writing about complicated relationships. This book has several of those relationships, not only between the three main women but also in their relationships with the men in their lives. The grocery store means different things to each woman and yet there is a common affinity and tie to the store that provides stability to each of them. I thought the characters were well developed, giving them depth and complexity. I especially liked the love portrayed in the marriages of both Glory Ann and Rosemary. Because the book alternated between time periods I became impatient when one chapter ended and the next chapter began in another time period. I wanted to know what was going to happen next in the chapter I just finished, which provided suspense in the story. Overall it was a good story, but sometimes there was a lot of sadness too. I appreciated the foreshadowing that allowed the reader to have a hint of what might be disclosed later in each these different women’s scenarios. I would recommend reading this book.

I thought The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery was a fabulous read. I instantly felt an instant connection to both Glory Ann and Sarah. I was able to relate to them easily and understand what they were going through. Their story is one that had me captivated right the first chapter and my attention was held all the way to the end. I loved every single page. I am giving The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery a very well deserved five plus stars. Lovers of Historical fiction with dual timelines will definitely want to read this one. It is among one of my favorites I have read for the year. I would love to see where else Amanda Cox’s imagination will take her readers to next. I received a paperback copy of The Secret Keepers of Old Depot Grocery from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Love love and love this story!! What a beautiful reminder that God's plans always prevail despite all of the twists and turns that life tries to throw at us. That there is freedom in releasing our need to control anything and everything. He knows what He's doing, we just have to step out of the way and let Him work in ways that only He can.
