Soccer was Hannah's whole world, until a life-changing injury meant saying goodbye to the future she'd mapped for herself. Now back home for the summer after a year away at boarding school, she's planning to fill her time with a new job at Bonanza, a local entertainment multiplex. But Hannah will also have to confront everything she left behind last year: the aftermath of her injury, a rift with her ex-best friend, her parents' broken trust, and the loss of her beloved Bubbie (Yiddish for grandma). Those Summer Nights has thoughtful Jewish rep, a diverse cast, a sweet summer romance--what more could I ask for? Hannah is an authentic, relatable character and I loved that she was allowed to be messy; she made some not-so-great choices in the face of grief and is now trying to rebuild her life again. She's trying to build new friendships while repairing the ones she fractured, looking to find new passions, and most of all, looking to find herself again. The relationship between Hannah and her late Bubbie was so beautiful, and I felt that her grief was handled in an authentic and sensitive way. Honestly, Laura Silverman's books always hit just right for me. Those Summer Nights is just the right balance of fun summer hijinks & swoony romance with thoughtful exploration of grief, family, and friendship. Check this one out if you've enjoyed Laura's books in the past, or if you're a fan of Dahlia Adler, Marisa Kanter, Brandy Colbert, or Sarah Henning.
