Book Synopsis

How do you find yourself after you lose the one you loved the most?

NATIONAL BESTSELLER - Grieving the loss of her best friend, a young woman's life is turned upside down when she meets a grumpy stranger who swears he can help her live again, in this heartwarming, slow-burn romance by the author of Ready or Not.

Lenny's a bit of a mess at the moment. Ever since cancer stole away her best friend, she has been completely lost. She's avoiding her concerned parents, the apartment she shared with her best friend, and the ever-laminated "live again" list of things she's promised to do to survive her grief. But maybe if she acts like she has it all together, no one will notice she's falling apart.

The only gigs she can handle right now are temporary babysitting jobs, and she just landed a great one, helping overworked, single mom Reese and her precocious daughter, Ainsley. The only catch: Ainsley's uncle, Miles, always seems to be around, and is kind of. . . a walking version of the grumpy cat meme. Worse - he seems to be able to see right through her.

Surprisingly, Miles knows a lot about grief and he offers Lenny a proposition. He'll help her complete everything on her "live again" list if she'll help him connect with Ainsley and overcome his complicated relationship with Reese. Lenny doubts anything can fill the void her best friend has left behind, but between late night ferry rides, midnight ramen, and a well-placed shoulder whenever she needs it, Miles just won't stop showing up for her. Turns out, sometimes your life has to end to find your new beginning.

Review Quotes

"Promise Me Sunshine disassembled me and then put me back together in the most obliterating way. Lenny and Miles love each other the way we're all supposed to--in the dark and the light, without hesitation or reservation, and I was lost to their story from the first page to the last. Cara Bastone handles grief with an unflinchingly tender touch, reminding us that life goes on and love never dies. This story is tucked inside my heart for good."--Jessica Joyce, USA Today bestselling author of The Ex Vows

"Flawlessly crafted and deeply emotional, Promise Me Sunshine grabbed hold of my heart from the very first page and didn't let go. I was laughing, sobbing, and everything in between. The story left me breathless and stayed with me long after I reached The End."--Amy Ewing, New York Times bestselling author of The Lone City trilogy and The Irish Goodbye

"A stunning book by Bastone, who delivers another slow-burn and emotional romance that doesn't shy away from also exploring life's hardest moments . . . Recommended for readers who also enjoy Abby Jimenez."--Library Journal, starred review

She's been a fan of the romance genre since she found a grocery bag filled with her grandmother's old Harlequin Romances when she was in high school. She's a fangirl for pretzel sticks, long walks through Prospect Park, and love stories featuring men who aren't hobbled by their own masculinity.

A Five-Star Read You Won’t Want to Put Down

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing for the opportunity to receive an ARC of Promise Me Sunshine by Cara Bastone. Why have I been holding out on reading Ready or Not by Cara Bastone? If that book is anything like Promise Me Sunshine, then I’ve been doing myself a huge disservice and missing out on some truly great reading. I’ve read many books this year, and Promise Me Sunshine is the first to earn a five-star rating from me. This book gave me all the feels, and I absolutely loved it. For those who may find it difficult to read about the loss of a loved one, be aware that this story touches on that theme. Promise Me Sunshine follows Lenny, who is struggling to move forward after losing her best friend. In the midst of her grief, she meets Miles, who helps her rediscover how to truly live again—just as she, in turn, helps him navigate his own family struggles. The slow build between these two characters? Chef’s kiss. You’re going to feel all the emotions while reading this, and you won’t want to put it down. Seriously, pick this book up—you won’t regret it!

Beautiful Book

My first 5 star of 2025! What a beautiful book about living again. I’ve dealt with my fair share of grief, especially lately, over friends (and more than once over best friends), and while not exactly like Lenny’s I was very worried this would be a triggering book for me. Somehow I found this story strike a different chord with me instead. On more occasions than I can count on two hands, I felt this story directly pulled from my life both in large and small ways. Major plots to throw away descriptors, details of the Live Again list to simply names. The more I read, the more it felt like Cara took all the major moments and plots of my lifetime and scrambled them up and rearranged them into a book of fiction. And somehow, what I expected to be triggering for me instead made me weirdly invested and by the end felt a lot more cathartic then I could have imagined. I loved both Lenny and Miles as characters. Lenny felt like a younger (and more depressed) Lorelei Gilmore to me while Miles was a balance that was somehow both quiet, brooding, observing and also cuddly and loveable under all that early judgement. A 5 star book boyfriend! There were a lot of lovely moments in this book, but I really enjoyed the tattoo shop, family dinner, the talent show and the way they finally get together. Thank you to Net Galley for this advanced reader copy. Tw-cancer, grief, loss of best friend

Lenny and Miles Forever

I don’t know where to start except that this book owns me now. Meeting Lenny feels like meeting a new best friend. And meeting Miles feels like finding a new crush (and fantasizing our love life and potential breakup—iykyk). What I loved most about this book was its take on grief. Which is obviously the main theme here, but it at times felt like a self-help book, but in the best way possible. The thing people might not understand about depression is that sometimes it’s more comfortable to continue being depressed, it becomes a relationship itself. It’s a lot of really freaking hard work to pull yourself out; and when that depression is tied to grief, it gets complicated. Not only do we face the existential crisis of one day facing our own death, but we have to cope with the fact that most of us some day will have to learn to live without someone we love. This book is an excellent vignette of that scenario. When free-spirit Lenny loses someone that she’s known and loved most of her life, she grapples with keeping one foot moving when all she wants to do is succumb to laying down and wallowing in her loss. Until she takes a temporary babysitting position and meets Reese, Ainsley, and Miles. Miles, Ainsley’s uncle, is a grump who is well acquainted with grief. When he learns that Lenny is struggling, he offers to become a sort of grief coach for her. In return? Lenny will help Miles connect with the few family members he has left. The writing is so funny, but also incredibly poignant. It mixes laughter with tears in a seamless way, and still gives you all the swoony butterflies. ☀️Grief ❤️Stangers to friends to lovers ☀️Complicated family dynamics ❤️Slow burn ☀️“Bucket list” storyline ❤️Cinnamon roll MMC Thank you to NetGalley (@netgalley) and @thedialpress for this ARC!
