Description
Book Synopsis
A guide for parents to help children of all ages process the onslaught of unfiltered information in the digital age. Education is not solely about acquiring information and skills across subject areas, but also about understanding how and why we believe what we do. At a time when online media has created a virtual firehose of information and opinions, parents and teachers worry how students will interpret what they read and see. Amid the noise, it has become increasingly important to examine different perspectives with both curiosity and discernment. But how do parents teach these skills to their children? Drawing on more than twenty years' experience homeschooling and developing curricula, Julie Bogart offers practical tools to help children at every stage of development to grow in their ability to explore the world around them, examine how their loyalties and biases affect their beliefs, and generate fresh insight rather than simply recycling what they've been taught. Full of accessible stories and activities for children of all ages, Raising Critical Thinkers helps parents to nurture passionate learners with thoughtful minds and empathetic hearts.Review Quotes
"In a world where too many people think they know what isn't so, there are few skills more vital than critical thinking and rethinking. This is the guide parents need to teach their kids to become thoughtful consumers of information."
-Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again "Julie Bogart is a brilliant educator who's written a wonderful book that shows us how to nurture children's ability to think critically and carefully. Each chapter offers dozens of questions, lessons, and exercises for helping learners understand their biases, evaluate the sources from which they get information, and consider other perspectives. These tools can enable students from kindergarten through high school to experience the joys of discovery and insight, and they can help young people grow into compassionate adults who want to make a positive contribution to their world. Read this book and use it. Your children and students will thank you, and you'll learn a lot about yourself, too!"
--William Stixrud, PhD, bestselling coauthor of The Self-Driven Child "There is no one I know whose wise counsel I would trust more than Julie Bogart when it comes to teaching our children (and ourselves!) how to think. Critical thinking has never been more important, and Julie arrived just when we needed her. This book is a must for anyone who wants to raise children to be thoughtful, kind, and independent."
--Sharon McMahon, creator of the award-winning podcast Here's Where It Gets Interesting
"Raising Critical Thinkers is a must-read for parents and teachers. It speaks to the deep need for raising and educating children (both at home and in the classroom) to do much more than accept, memorize, and restate. Julie masterfully provides the tools to guide children in growing the ability to think--while also challenging readers to reflect on their own critical-thinking skills in the process. It is a gold mine of learning for all."
--Susie Allison, creator of Busy Toddler and author of Busy Toddler's Guide to Actual Parenting "Raising Critical Thinkers encourages us to grow courageous children who respect evolving beliefs, value intellectual honesty, and consider context as they read and experience the world. The journey I took with this book was thought-provoking, and every chapter expanded my parenting priorities in a glorious way."
--Amber O'Neal Johnston, author of A Place to Belong "Critical thinking is not merely a test of fact vs. fiction. In this timely and actionable primer, Julie Bogart teaches us how imagination, self-awareness, empathy, and introspection make true critical thinking possible. These are crucial lessons for children and parents alike."
--Ximena Vengoechea, author of Listen Like You Mean It "We live in an era when critical thinking is more important than ever--a world inundated with bewildering information, contradictory misinformation, and a zillion hot takes. In Raising Critical Thinkers, Julie Bogart provides a passionate, compassionate exploration of what critical thinking is and how to hone this vital skill set in our children--and ourselves. This is a brainy, practical, encouraging guidebook, written with Julie's signature clarity and common sense. I can't wait to share it with my kids."
--Melissa Wiley, author of The Nerviest Girl in the World "I am in awe. Every parent and educator needs to read this book. As a psychologist and mother, I understand the importance of raising critical thinkers, but it's not always clear what that really means day-to-day. Raising Critical Thinkers uses cutting-edge education theory and concrete practices to answer: How do we help kids separate fact from fiction? What can we do to keep kids' curiosity and 'itch' to learn alive? What fosters self-awareness and flexible perspective taking in kids? Let Julie Bogart guide you through the wilderness of raising critical thinkers."
--Diana Hill, PhD, author of ACT Daily Journal "For parents who care about raising sharp-minded and powerfully independent children, Julie Bogart's new book is the perfect guide."
--Blake Boles, author of Why Are You Still Sending Your Kids to School? and founder of Unschool Adventures "With fascinating examples and age-specific activities to help kids learn to think deeply, imaginatively, and compassionately, Julie Bogart gives us the guide for nurturing critical thinking in the next generation."
--Yael Schonbrun, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University "For decades, I've admired Julie Bogart's wise and humane help for parents who participate in their children's education."
--Peter Elbow, Professor of English Emeritus, University of Massachusetts at Amherst

Raising Critical Thinkers showcases Julie Bogart’s distinct style–well researched theories clearly laid out in plain language, delivered with honesty and authenticity including Julie’s personal experiences–successes AND failures–that make her work so relevant and relatable. In this digital age when it is often difficult to discern the validity of “facts,” and online discussions are rarely productive, let alone civil, Julie takes you through the steps to help your children learn to investigate, experience, and encounter words and ideas through self-awareness–a trait that’s essential to critical thinking–in order to think, communicate, and relate to the people around them in a thoughtful and empathetic manner. Julie has had a profoundly positive effect on my experience as a parent. She has always emphasized relationship as a priority–relationship with your kids, relationship with friends and your community, and now relationship with information and ideas–”Lifelong learning is expressed as a relationship, not a degree.” Julie has included activities and exercises in each chapter of Raising Critical Thinkers that are fun, pertinent, and easy to follow. Even though I really wish I had had this book when my kids were growing up, I found a great deal of value in Julie’s theories that I can apply to my own life. I still have plenty of growing left to do, so I look forward to trying the exercises and implementing the practices myself. I highly recommend Raising Critical Thinkers for all parents, and really, for all people!
Thank you, Julie Bogart!

Julie Bogart has once again hit the nail on the head! In her brand new book, Raising Critical Thinkers: A Parent's Guide to Growing Wise Kids in the Digital Age, Julie speaks to us as a professional, a mentor, and a friend. Combining research with practical techniques and personal stories, she has created the perfect guide for not only parents, teachers, and caregivers, but for all adults who wish to strengthen their own ability to think critically. Engaging and thought provoking activities are sprinkled throughout the book. Every chapter brings new, insightful content that teaches how to broaden one’s mind and approach with others. Healthy interaction and the ability to discern between fact and fiction and everything in between is one of the greatest life skills. Not all is black and white. This book is a must read for everyone!

This book is everything the world needs right now! As Julie Bogart says in the book, “how our children think will create the world they share.” For an educational book I found this extremely readable and easy to understand. The personal stories weaved throughout the chapters made the content feel relatable. (Not hard to imagine if you follow Julie on Instagram, everything she does feels personal, relatable and genuine!) My favorite part of the book was the activities to do with your kids included at the end of most chapters. These activities allowed me to play with the books ideas in a meaningful and concrete way. This is not a political book, nor does the author tell you what to think. Instead she gently guides you to evaluate evidence, notice bias, determine facts vs opinions, read deeply, compare viewpoints and lead your children on a journey to truly become critical thinkers. I read a digital copy but will probably buy a second hard copy to highlight and write in. This is a book you will revisit over and over so pick a publishing style you can access easily.

Julie Bogart has been a homeschool hero of mine for years, and now she’s gone and written an absolute classic parents’ guide for anyone trying to navigate their way through this time of inundation of information. This book awakens something inside of you and at a time where things feel so very out of control, she gives you the tools to help not only your children, but you yourself make informed opinions. The exercises she uses to help your kids practice critical thinking are simple, fun and lack any sort of political connotation. I feel deeply that critical thinking is a survival tool in this age and to have a guide now to help my children learn these skills feels priceless. It also helps that Julie is a naturally engaging and delightful writer, so it never got dry or boring to read through. I know I will refer back to this book over and over again.
A guide to Critical *Essential* Thinking

I have been wanting a book like this for years now! In the engaged mom/parent world, we often talk about wanting our kids to be "life long learners" and we also talk about how we can be examples for our kids. That we can show them how we are curious or that we can follow our own goals and interests so that they can see by our example that learning is fun. But here's the thing, HOW do we demonstrate "life long learning" without some sort of guide? Learning equals change and change is hard -- especially for adults! Are we growing and curious and changing as we re-think and listen? How do we model this? Do our kids just see us buckling down and being immovable and irritated with anything we disagree with? Or are we honing our own opinions and values in curiosity that refines them continuously rather than being instantly judgmental? When we can learn to sit with the discomfort of different opinions we create emotional and mental safety for our kids to explore and learn to think for themselves. This book could be under self help, as it is that! The chapter endings have very practical ways that we can engage with our kids (at each age level) during the day in different ways. For instance, how to identify view points and how to talk to our kids about differing views. The book isn't going to try to convince you of a "side" of any issue, but rather how to zoom out and examine the "sides" (maybe even identify more than two sides!) of any issue AND to recognize our own reaction to hearing something we might disagree with. Just because we feel uncomfortable does not mean that thing is "wrong" -- so how do we know? How do we think critically about all the different things? How can we be and model that mythical "life long learning" thing that so many moms have said they want for their kids? This book is the wise woman to walk us through this process with our kids (or students) and especially with ourselves. This book is fun to read so reads fast, but there is also so much to think about and chew on that you will want to read it again, put sticky notes it, and keep referencing back as you use the ideas. This would be useful for teachers of all age groups and parents, or people who realize they never learned how to ask questions well in school and want to re-parent themselves to grow and be more decerning and think for themselves. This doesn't push ideologies so you could give it as a gift to that person you always argue with at Thanksgiving and maybe you both (after reading this) might be able to speak with a bit more room and space for your differeing views. Actually, even if you just read this and they don't those difficult clashes will smooth out, because this author guides us through how to engage with challenge. Even starting with the toddler questioning why they have to wash their hands! We want to raise our kids into competent adults who are curious and thinking and always learning. We know they will think differently than us (who among us thinks exactly the same as we were raised?) So, can we learn to hold this space of relationship even as they (and us) are changing and being "life long learners"? -- Yes! Yes we can hold the space and love each other even as we are growing and changing and my disagree. It is uncomfortable to allow room for disagreement, but Julie Bogart's book gently guides us through this process of learning how to think carefully. And the result? The fertile ground for healthy growth and connection with our kids for our whole life.

Humans are naturally consumers of ideas. As people grow it’s important that we learn to think critically about ideas before we accept them as true. Julie helps kids, as well as adults, learn how to continue striving for knowledge, to be introspective, to use their imagination, to be empathetic, and to think deeply. This easy read leads us down the road to critical thinking in Julie’s casual, best friend talking to you style. I think you’ll find it an invaluable resource in raising critical thinkers and it’s likely to be one that you’ll go back to time and time again…at least it will be for me.

Raising Critical Thinkers is a valuable book for every parent. Whether we realize it or not, we are always imparting our beliefs, perspectives, biases, worldviews, interpretations, opinions, and prejudices (and if you don’t think you have them, well, you’ll sure realize you do throughout this book!) to our children and it is important to recognize, evaluate, and possibly change or release ones that are no longer serving us or are harmful. In Raising Critical Thinkers, Julie Bogart helps us learn how to reflect on and evaluate them in ourselves and how to curiously seek to understand them in others (including our children, our spouses/partners, our communities, and yup, even those we deem our opposition!). Since reading the book, I've found myself seriously considering the source of the perspectives of people I interact with. I really like that! If you’re worried that there will be commentary or obnoxious rants about hot political issues, religion, or any other divisive problem in our society today, there isn’t. I was specifically looking for it and it was not there. What you will learn about is how to stay connected to and in relationship with people even when you disagree, and in fact maybe you’ll learn to at least begin to value those disagreements as a way to learn more about others. Raising Critical Thinkers will help you learn skills to cultivate your relationship with your kids and invite their perspectives, thoughts, and feelings so that you’ll increase the trust in your relationship. You’ll learn how to focus on problem-solving rather than finding the “right” answer. There is plenty of practical help, even in the form of specific questions to consistently work into your conversations with your family to increase everyone’s capacity for critical thinking. If you’re looking for a book that will help you develop skills to learn more about yourself and others, defuse divisive discussions, and create connection through disagreements, you will value Raising Critical Thinkers and learn a lot from Julie’s wise perspective and winsome writing style.
