About the Book

"A collection of six connected stories that follows a group of fox kits as they fight to survive in an unforgiving wilderness"--

Book Synopsis

A 2020 Newbery Honor Recipient!

Christian McKay Heidicker, author of the Thieves of Weirdwood trilogy, draws inspiration from Bram Stoker, H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe for his debut middle-grade novel, a thrilling portrait of survival and an unforgettable tale of friendship.

"Clever and harrowing." --The Wall Street Journal

"Into the finest tradition of storytelling steps Christian McKay Heidicker with these highly original, bone-chilling, and ultimately heart-warming stories. All that's needed is a blazing campfire and a delicious plate of peaches and centipedes." --Kathi Appelt, Newbery Award honoree and National Book Award finalist

The haunted season has arrived in the Antler Wood. No fox kit is safe.

When Mia and Uly are separated from their litters, they discover a dangerous world full of monsters. In order to find a den to call home, they must venture through field and forest, facing unspeakable things that dwell in the darkness: a zombie who hungers for their flesh, a witch who tries to steal their skins, a ghost who hunts them through the snow . . . and other things too scary to mention.

Featuring eight interconnected stories and sixteen hauntingly beautiful illustrations, Scary Stories for Young Foxes contains the kinds of adventures and thrills you love to listen to beside a campfire in the dark of night. Fans of Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Auxier, and R. L. Stine have found their next favorite book.

Unlike the other reviewer, I adamantly disagree that if subject matter is emotionally complex and difficult that that means it's "not suitable for children". Poppycock. This book, like every Disney movie, offers children a safe way to explore emotionally difficult/scary experiences in a safe way while still catering to a child's perspective. To think that children don't experience loss, fear, or distress is short-sighted. They do. They will. They relate. And they have a million books painting the world as great, joyful, easy - but if you're looking to let your child understand and safely explore the other side of life, I highly recommend adding this thoughtful book to their shelves. There's a reason it won the Newbery Award.

Excellent book for ages 9 and older. Similar to Grimm's Fairy Tales and other fables, the stories in this book are certainly not "sugar coated" with happy endings, but provide an opportunity to teach children a very important lesson about family, life and loss. Written from the foxes viewpoint, the storytelling is captivating. Our son loves this book and has already read it several times over. The title of the book says it all, informing the reader that the stories inside are not shiny and happy but rather a bit scary and dark. The book is certainly appropriate for a youth if you would let them read Where the Red Fern Grows, Old Yeller, Lost in the Barrens, or even Fantastic Mr. Fox. Unfortunately real life is a bit scary at times and this book allows for thoughtful discussions between parents and children especially if you read along with them. So if you are looking for a funny lighthearted book about foxes with a happy ending, this is not for you. Otherwise, it is a great read, well written and certainly worth checking out.

This is a horrible book and certainly not suitable for children. The stories all involved death and suffering of young animals. I suppose they are to be seen as allegories but are disturbing none the less.
