About the Book
Chicago fifth-grader Simon, an aspiring rapper who lacks self-confidence, uses his rhymes to help bring his community together.Book Synopsis
A humorous and heartwarming bounce-to-the-beat underdog story about a young rapper whose rhymes help bring his community together, from America's favorite rapping teacher. As featured on Good Morning America! Eleven-year-old Simon Barnes dreams of becoming a world-famous rapper that everyone calls Notorious D.O.G. But for now, he's just a Chicago fifth grader who's small for his age and afraid to use his voice. Simon prefers to lay low at school and at home, even though he's constantly spitting rhymes in his head. But when his new teacher assigns the class an oral presentation on something that affects their community, Simon must face his fears. With some help from an unexpected ally and his neighborhood crew, will Simon gain the confidence to rap his way to an A and prove that one kid can make a difference in his 'hood? Dwayne Reed is a Chicago teacher, whose viral back-to-school music video "Welcome to the 4th Grade" took the internet by storm. His debut novel, Simon B. Rhymin' , inspires young readers everywhere to use their voice to create change within their communities.Review Quotes

MY SON WON'T PUT THE BOOK DOWN :)

My son and I purchased this book on yesterday. He was drawn to at store and immediately found similarities been himself and the main character. It was awesome to see him connect with the book on a personal level and to see representation of himself. Every chapter he has excitedly talked with me about how much he sees himself in the book. He is in such awe! He has literally has carried the book everywhere he has gone (car, soccer practice, etc.) since yesterday. I can't wait to purchase him more books like these and from this particular author (Dwayne Reed).

What lucky children to have him as their teacher! My daughter is so excited to read her book and will be sharing it with her class and I will be purchasing copies for her school and teachers. We need more Black men and women teachers in our classrooms, I’ve gained so much insight by following Mr. Reeds Insta and have shared his viewpoints with the principals and teachers at my children’s school.

This book is AMAZING! I ordered this one for myself and I sent another copy to my grandson so we can read it together on FaceTime! The dialogue and the raps included are fun and poignant. We are looking forward to more books by this author and I am happy that Target decided to carry this book.

Excellent book! Loved the authors voice and fun rhymes throughout. The illustrations were sprinkled in added fun visuals to a descriptive, thoughtful story. Adding this to my classroom read alouds for sure. Ordered another copy for my 10 yo niece for her bday!
