Review Quotes
A New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller
"My favorite YA of 2020." --Sabaa Tahir, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Ember in the Ashes series and National Book Award Winner All My Rage"Cinematically imagined... An exciting, layered, action-filled tale." - Kirkus Reviews "Paradoxes abound and readers will glory in them all." - Booklist "Suspense and high-action fights make this plot-driven story both fast-paced and brutal." - School Library Journal "Lu (The Kingdom of Back and Legend) creates a devastating, war-torn world, built upon the wreckage of a technologically advanced society. Readers will eagerly await a follow-up to this engrossing dystopian novel, which searingly interrogates traumas of war, immigration, and imperialism." - Publishers Weekly "Lu ably balances lightning-fast action and stirring battles with romance, weaving in enough bits of cultural history to give the story some grounding... This hearty but small group of Talin, Red, and a few more allies face formidable odds in the next outing, and readers will likely eagerly await news on how they fare." - The Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books (BCCB) "The high-stakes action (including graceful, deadly combat) more than once has readers fearing for the characters' lives...In addition, Lu brings in themes of disability and prejudice to this science fiction tale with many of the markers of traditional fantasy." - Hornbook

This is my favorite book of Marie Lu's since her original Legend trilogy! I feel like the book's description didn't do it justice, as I was uncertain how much I'd enjoy it going it, but it only took a few pages for me to wonder why I'd waited so long to read it. The Strikers reminded me of Attack on Titan a little bit. The heroine's inability to speak (not from birth, but since her home nation was invaded) was an interesting twist to her character development, especially as more about her backstory is revealed. The arrival of the "mysterious prisoner" is referenced only briefly in the description, but that's when the book really starts to take off. I don't want to spoil anything, but the evils and technologies developed by the Karensa Federation take center stage and provide an interesting exploration of what CAN be done with the science left behind by an ancient civilization, versus what SHOULD be done.
A great start to a new series

Skyhunter by Marie Lu was a quick and easy ya read that starts off a wonderful beginning to a new series. 4.5/5 stars. This book begins in a beautiful world created by Marie Lu. Expected. I love the worlds she creates. That’s something she excels at. Things that worked: I loved loved loved our main character Talin. Her vocal cords were hurt when she was a child so the only way she can speak is by sign language, which lucky for her, her entire battalion is required to learn in battle. I have never read ya where the main character can’t actually speak. This novel is fast paced and easy to keep up with. I genuinely loved the progression and how easy this was for me to get through. Things that didn’t work: The heartbreak in this novel is continuous. Our characters are constantly beaten down and struggling. It is extremely easy to connect with them and cheer them on. Just a heads up for potential readers, it will not be an emotionally easy read I loved this. I’m just sad it is a series and we’re going to have to wait between books. That stresses me out to no end. I highly recommend my ya fans check this book out. Definitely worth the read!

As a child, Talin and her mother escaped to the city of Mara after their home was destroyed by the Federation. Now as Striker, one of Mara’s fiercest warriors, Talin faces constant ridicule for being a Basean outsider. Strikers are the main line of defense in protecting the city from Federation experiments such as Ghosts. These humans, turned monsters, are contorted and deformed creatures that seek to kill everything in their path. If a human is bitten by one, they will become one themselves. After her Shield - a Striker’s partner - is mauled by a ghost, Talin is forced to do the unthinkable. Just as she is about to give up hope on Mara defeating the Federation, a prisoner of war is brought into the Striker compound. Something about this man seems different to Talin. Could he be the answer to Mara’s prayers? I’m embarrassed to say Skyhunter is my introduction to the wonderful writing of Marie Lu. However, I can guarantee this will not be the last book I read from this creative author. Most of my four and five star reads grab my attention after a few chapters. This one had me after a few pages. This Sci-Fi Fantasy story is filled with action, monsters, war, heroics, and a tidbit of romance. I was teetering between giving this 4 or 5 stars. I ended up giving it four based on the amount of inner dialogue the reader experiences with Talin. Talin is a mute, so the reader experiences her interactions with other characters through her thoughts and when she explains what she is signing. It's a very interesting reading perspective that became a bit much for me in the more action packed parts of the story. I highly recommend Skyhunter to anyone who loves to read Sci-Fi Fantasy. Especially if you are a fan of series such as Divergent or The Hunger Games.
