About this item
Highlights
- This mid-range telephoto prime lens is a great choice for professional photographers who require the best optical performance possible.
- This lens utilizes Smooth Trans Focus (STF) technology to reduce chromatic aberration and provide softly dissolving bokeh without sacrificing image resolution.
- This means that the out-of-focus points of light in your photos retain a soft, blurry look as opposed to the harsh rings that can occur with lower quality lenses.
- In order to further improve image quality, the lens features Sony’s Nano Anti Reflective coating which reduces the amount of light that’s reflected by the lens and helps reduce lens flare and image ghosting.
- This lens also has a constant F2.8 maximum aperture that allows you to more easily maintain exposure settings while changing the zoom range.

I recently purchased THIS LENSE, and I couldn't be more impressed with its quality and performance. Right out of the box, the build feels robust and well-engineered, which gives me confidence that it will withstand the rigors of regular use. One of the standout features is the optical quality. The images produced are incredibly sharp, with excellent contrast and vibrant colors. Whether I'm shooting landscapes, portraits, or macro photography, the lens consistently delivers stunning results. The bokeh is smooth and creamy, which adds a professional touch to my images. Another significant advantage is the lens’s low-light performance. It handles challenging lighting conditions remarkably well, producing clear, noise-free images even at wider apertures. This has opened up new creative possibilities for me, allowing for more dynamic shots without the need for excessive post-processing. Additionally, the autofocus is fast and accurate, making it a joy to use for both still photography and video. I’ve found that it tracks moving subjects exceptionally well, which is crucial for capturing those spontaneous moments. Overall, I highly recommend the [Lens Model] to anyone looking to elevate their photography. Its combination of build quality, optical performance, and versatility makes it a fantastic addition to any photographer’s toolkit.

I bought this with the intention of using it for macro photography and it is proving useful for product photography. The clarity of a Sony prime lens is unmatched, in my opinion.

I only purchased my Sony lens just over a week ago so I haunt yet had an opportunity to test it extensively. However, so far, it has produced pin sharp images, is light and compact and complements my Sony S7C II camera perfectly.
Good in certain circumstances.

It’s a decent lens and the weight is good. But boy do you have to watch out for CA. Which is absolutely abysmal with this lens. It’s generally overpriced imo. First party you don’t have too many options.

I'm basically a wide angle guy, so when I got the new A7cII, I went with the 24 GM. But still, ya gotta have SOMETHING tele and I wanted something light, unobtrusive and fast handling. This is perfect, and the image quality is terrific. I'd get it again. No question.

Whilst all the publicity and lens reviews attention seems to be on the faster f1.4 lenses for the Sony FE Alpha system, this f1.8 lens is a gem and much more easy to handle due to its compact size and low weight when moving around taking portrait, sports or street photographs. The difference between f1.4 and f1.8 isn't that significant with modern camera sensors that can handle low light situations, whilst the images captured are very similar, so Sony is to be applauded for keeping an f1.8 85mm lens in its range - it would be great if it does the same for all its lenses (pro 1.8 versions of all its key focal lengths) as an original reason for going mirror-less was to save weight and size.
Very sharp and helps you concentrate on th subject

I found that with this lens taking landscapes the picture was really sharp. Also I realised I had to think what the subject of the photo was and so it has helped improve the look of the finished picture.

Great picture quality but poor minimum focusing distance.
1 reply from Sony Social Support team - 2 years ago
Hello Ideeeee, Thank you for sharing your opinion on this lens. Sony's commitment to customer satisfaction is our top priority. The 85mm f1.8 is spectacularly sharp, we're happy to hear you are enjoying that. Unfortunately due to the physics in magnification of lenses, Full frame telephoto prime lenses will normally have a higher minimum focusing distance, unless it is designed as a macro lens which will have more elements inside, making it a larger lens in size and weight. Thank you again for sharing. -Linda Sony Social Support
