I have no idea why my company would provide me with such an old and outdated product. In my opinion this dock should have been discontinued and updated. A docking station should reduce wires and mess but having no power feels archaic. I have 2 screens both with HDMI connecters and this dock can only connect one. I have tried a HDMI to display port adaptor but for some reason it doesn't work. I find the price confusing as I have found much more for less elsewhere.

Ports are numerous but the lack of a way to charge a laptop directly through the dock is a game breaker.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of our USB3DOCKH2DP. Unfortunately, this is expected behaviour with this docking station, as power delivery was not a supported by USB-A 3.0. As a suggestion, we have a similar model that includes the function of charging the host computer, DK30CH2DEP. Please note that this feature requires a computer with a USB-C port and support for charging through USB-C.

Never an issue

I bought this 3 years ago and it is a champ I've taken it to many university housing situations and used it with multiple laptops, monitors and a tv screen on one occasion. I constantly have 3, 720p monitors hooked up to it and it runs like butter. I keep my mouse, keyboard, optical drive and aux speakers hooked up to it and the run smoothly at all times I have never had any problems with it. I hooked it up to my 4k tv once and my video feed was a little slower than usual but I'm pretty sure that was because my old laptop didn't have the processing power for 4k. This is one of the best products I have ever owned as a engineering university student. This product doesn't stand out in any way and that's what is great about it. hook anything up to it and it just work as if it was plugged right into your computer.

Not just for Laptops

I work from home and also in the office...but I don't have a laptop. My work is mostly document-based, with spreadsheets and cloud-based things. The only video I do is an occasional YouTube clip here and there. I have a small form-factor desktop PC with an Intel i3 series CPU. On this hardware (running Windows 10) this thing works brilliantly. It allows me to move easily between office and home office. When I want to switch locations, I just un-do one AC power connection and one USB cable and I'm out the door. Connecting at the other location is just as simple - in two minutes I'm back online and working. If your intent is to use one of these docking stations with a system that is NOT a laptop, there are a couple things to watch out for: 1) Many PCs will not boot if there is no keyboard connected when you switch them on. I had to make one change to my PC BIOS to get around this issue. After that one little change, everything worked perfectly for me. 2) It is VERY important to install the DisplayLink drivers BEFORE connecting this unit for the first time. I did this, connected my three monitors and all other peripherals through the StarTech docking station and then disconnected the monitor from the PC. Then I re-arranged my monitor settings in the Windows 10 control panel and all was well. I haven't had to connect a monitor to my PC directly since then. Video performance is perfectly adequate for general purpose computing, but is NOT fast and I noticed a small performance hit overall in my system running this unit. Neither of these things are deal-breakers for me. I expected some performance penalty once I connected this device, but it isn't a real hindrance to me at all. I might wait one second longer for applications to load - not a huge deal. Many PC docking stations will do dual monitors but I haven't found any others that will do three. That is what makes this product so essential to me. You're not going to game on this device - don't have unreasonable expectations and I think you'll really appreciate it. I can't speak to Mac compatibility, but (again) I'd suggest not having unreasonable expectations.

This has tons of ports, and I'm using nearly all of them. I have two 2K DP monitors and a lot of USB. The only port I'm not using is the microphone. On two of the USB ports, I have powered hubs. For the monitors, they're hooked into active adapters that convert from DP to DVI-D. With all of that, what is there to say? I've been using it for 3+ years and I'm very happy. Is there anything better to say??

Major lagging

Have a new HP laptop 16GB RAM and SSD. Two DP to HDMI monitors plugged into this dock and major lag on a consistent basis. No lag when one monitor is plugged directly into the laptop and the docking station is disconnected. Disappointed considering it wasn't cheap. I expected more.
1 reply from Customer Support team - 5 years ago
We always try to ensure our customers have exceptional experiences with us and our products and we apologize for the issues you've seen with our USB3DOCKH2DP. This dock should not be lagging as long as it's connected directly into a USB 3.0 port on your computer and not through a USB 2.0 port or a USB hub. Some software, however, may have settings to communicate directly with your graphics card (called hardware acceleration) and this can cause lag when using a docking station. We have a FAQ available on the product support page on how to disable this setting in a number of different software and we'd be happy to help look into this with you if you require any assistance. Please feel free to contact us at www.startech.com/support where our Technical Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week to provide support.

When it works it works great

When the dock works it works great but I have the regular issue of it displaying all three of my screens when I'm working but after unplugging my laptop and reconnecting the next day it only showing one screen. So far the only way to fix this has been to reboot my laptop. Setting it up initially was also a good amount of work and took a fair amount of googling to get all three screens to be recognized. But like I said, when it's working the way it's supposed to, it works great. machine: 15" - 2019 Macbook Pro OS: macOS Catalina (10.15.1)

That's perfect device that I used for couple months with my MacOS and dual 27" ViewSonic monitors without any issues. Now new MacOS 10.15 'Catalina' has arrived. I did the update of the driver to 5.2.1 Beta 2 and got two black monitors. MacOS detects them well, but nothing more. If I switched on/off a monitor, "No signal' message raises.

I brought USB3DOCKH2DP in dutch webshop BOL.COM, I connected 3 monitors to this dock, but 1 of the monitor keep falling-off and restart. First I thought the cable is broken, so I ordered new display-port cable, the issue was not solved by using new cable. So I called customer service and support StarTech.com, they asked some info's and copy of invoice then they offers to replace right away. Afther 1 week I received new dock and all works well now. Again thank you very much for the support.

Used this to connect to 2 HDMI resolution monitors via DisplayPort, and run the Mac with the lid closed. Hub also links to webcam, and wired LAN. Set up with magic keyboard and mouse. Hub powers the Mac, so great integrated solution. Make sure to download the latest drivers from DPLink if connecting to display post.

Thank you for your review of USB3DOCKH2DP. We're sorry it stopped working after you updated macOS! This dock is compatible with macOS 10.8 - 10.12, and macOS 10.14. Unfortunately, due to a compatibility issue, it will not generate displays in macOS 10.13 (High Sierra). If you are using macOS 10.13, we recommend upgrading to macOS 10.14. Feel free to contact our Technical Advisors at www.startech.com/support if you would like further help or have any questions. We're available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, to provide support.

Thanks for sharing your feedback; we certainly understand your frustration. On our website, we currently list support for up to macOS 10.13.3. Unfortunately, in macOS 10.13.4 to 10.13.6, only 1 extended display will function using a beta driver from the chipset manufacturer, DisplayLink. We apologize that there is no better solution available at this time. However, we do not expect the performance issues you're describing with your Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon. We suggest reaching out to our Technical Advisors at www.startech.com/support for troubleshooting assistance. We're available 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, to provide support.
