About this item

Highlights

  • 100% pure trehalose, a multi-functional sugar
  • Quick-energy disaccharide naturally occurring in fungi and plants
  • May be used in cooking and baking to replace sugar

Description

What if we could sweeten foods and beverages without sucrose (table sugar) and without chemical sugar substitutes (like aspartame or sucralose)? What if there was a sugar that not only sweetens but enhances flavor? And what if that sugar was actually good for you? Introducing trehalose (tree-UH-lowz), a sugar product now available for home use for the first time since its discovery over 175 years ago. Trehalose is sweet and energizing! This multi-functional sugar is a disaccharide consisting of two glucose molecules, and when metabolized, it releases both molecules--twice the glucose other forms of stored sugar release. This translates into quick energy. Sometimes trehalose is referred to as mushroom sugar because it is found in significant amounts in certain mushrooms. But the compound appears also in fungi like yeast, in seeds, in algae and in resurrection plants --desert plants that survive long periods of drought yet spring to life when provided moisture. As a sweetener, trehalose does not interfere with natural flavors and does not produce a rapid rise in blood glucose seen with sucrose and other sugars. The enzyme that digests trehalose is found primarily in the small intestine, which means it is not fully metabolized until 2 or 3 hours after digestion. This slow process may also be the key to sustained energy trehalose appears to offer. Trehalose Tips: For cooking and baking, replace sugar one for one with trehalose. Because trehalose is only about half as sweet as sugar, you may wish to replace only a portion of the sugar in your recipe with trehalose. For instance, try 1 tablespoon of sugar to one half cup of trehalose. Experiment until you find what works or tastes best for you. Note: trehalose will not brown like sugar, which can be overcome by leaving some sugar in the recipe and/or by brushing the outer surface of your baked goods with a simple sugar solution.

Q: where is the trehalose produced and from what type of starch (corn or topioca)?

submitted by Tina - 6 months ago
  • A: Hello there, Tina! Thank you for reaching out and I would be happy to help! Our Trehalose SWU478 is manufactured within the United States and may be from either corn, tapioca or other food stock as long as the resulting trehalose passes all quality and safety tests. I bought this because I read that it may be helpful with NAFL, fatty liver. It's mildly sweet, no after taste. Time will tell if it helps fatty liver.

Had to use a lot of it to make a difference. Not for me. Going back to stevia.

I think works well for me on cereals that I need a litte sweet than no sugar at all. Like farina and oatmeal. My hubby pours on butter and brown sugar on these things and I hate sugar even as a child hated sweetened cereals of any kind. Fought with my family over this. THey could not understand why a child would hate sugar...my dad with a huge sweet tooth benefited the most from my dislkes. He got most of my candy at Easter, Xmas, Halloween. Especially popcorn balls. (I had sensitive teeth to sweets too at age 8 and on as my baby teeth were replaced with the adult teeth which came in with what they called soft spots due to a high fever at a year old when I almost died due to whooping cough. Meanwhile I still am not a big sugar fan. This works great. It is however not as sweet as sugar for those who need that sweetness this may be expensive to use enough to get it just right. A jar on average lasts 1.5 to 3 months I use it that sparingly.

We use Trehalose for industrial purposes, not as a food source. It is by far less expensive than the chemical companies, and is still of very high quality.

Good balance for stevia

This is far less sweet than stevia and makes a perfect complement. I am still learning to bake with stevia, but using trehalose as a base made it possible to make even no bake chocolate oatmeal cookies without sugar (just a little soft, but better than anything else I've tried). Considering how much it takes to sweeten, it is very expensive. I'm trying to get my friends and family off sugar, but they say they can't afford to bake with this.

I do not need a substitute for sugar but I am hoping that this will hydrate my cells (plump them up) the way it was suggested on other websites. I am puzzled that those claims are not made by Swanson. Too soon to tell if it works.

I didn't notice any sustained energy from it. It takes quite a bit to sweeten beverages, so you wind up using the container up pretty quickly, and at ten bucks a pop that's not very economical. I'm gonna stick with Kal brand stevia. Won't be reordering any trehalose.

Trehalose a excellent Sugar Replacement

I just start using Trehalose and I believe it's a nice replacement for sugar. I mix Trehalose with Lankanto Sweetner to help lower the carbs in baked goods. Lankanto is a sugar that uses both Erythitol and Luo Han Guo, which are also two of my favorites. Anyway together these two sugars make a nice combination in bake goods, and yes I will use Trehalose again. It is a much healthier for your body in the long run, and worth the extra cost. Although I do hope the cost will go down as more people by both Trehalose and Lankanto.

Good sugar substitute

I'm on a constant quest for sugar substitutes. This has become my favorite. It's only 50% as sweet as sugar but I add some Stevia to make up the difference. It cooks well and so far I have not seen any gastric problems like the sugar-alcohols can cause. It's also has a low glycemic value which is a good thing too.

I mix this with our table sugar so we get less sugar overall. The kids haven't even noticed! Unlike the whole "sneak soy milk into the regular milk" fiasco. ;-) It's actually a little whiter than table sugar, but very similar in texture. It is definitely a bit pricey, but if it can help them get less sugar in their herbal tea or cereal, then it's worth it.

I preparation for my New Years diet :) I got this to cut down on sugar. When you put your finger in the jar it feels like grainulated white sugar. The taste is like sugar but less defined and less sweet. If a recipe calls for 1/2 c sugar I use 1/3 c and a couple of scoops of trehalose. The scoop is included. The sweet flavor is there but not as pronounced. No one has complained or noticed!! Every saved calorie helps!!

Excellent sugar substitute

This product is an excellent sugar substitute, with no after taste at all. You do need to use more of this than regular sugar, but it is worth it if you need to cut down on your sugar intake. Wish it came in a bigger bottle, however. This price from Swanson is very good, considering this product is not yet widely available everywhere, and where it is found, it is more expensive than this.
