Description
About the Book
"Karissa Newcomb is ready for a new start in a new neighborhood, as far away as she can get from Seattle, where her husband cheated on her with the neighbor who was supposed to be her best friend. She and her nine-year-old daughter are moving on to the city of Gig Harbor on the bay in Puget Sound. She even has a new job as an assistant at a small publishing company right in Gig Harbor. Her new boss seems like a bit of a curmudgeon, but a job is a job, she loves to read, and the idea of possibly meeting writers sounds fabulous. Soon she finds she's not the only one in need of a refresh. Her new neighbors, Alice and Margot, are dealing with their own crises. Alice is still grieving her late husband and hasn't been able to get behind the wheel of a car since a close call after his death. Margot is floundering after getting divorced and laid off in quick succession. They could all use a distraction, and a book club seems like just the ticket. Together, the three women, along with Alice's grumpy older sister, Josie, embark on a literary journey that just might be the kick-start they need to begin building their best lives yet."--Book Synopsis

The Best Life Book Club by Sheila Roberts is a story about a fresh start, trust, friendship, and feeling better about yourself. I have been reading Sheila Roberts novels for seventeen years, and this is the first story by Ms. Roberts that I did not find to be an enjoyable reading experience. The point of view switches between the characters. The switch is abrupt (can change from one paragraph to the next). The bouncing around can give you whiplash (and it can be hard to tell who is currently speaking). It is also hard to keep the women and their journeys straight. With the various storylines and characters, I found there to be plot holes and missing details. The romance between Karissa and Edward felt forced and rushed. Personally, I wish the story had focused on the women and their journeys. I did not feel that romance was needed. I liked seeing the women come together. They encouraged and helped each other. Together they created something special. I enjoyed the book discussions and the book references. I could tell that the author is familiar with Gig Harbor, Washington based on her beautiful descriptions. The depictions allowed me to visualize the town. The Best Life Book Club had an ending that will leave you smiling. Better times were ahead for Karissa, Alice, Margot, Josie, and young Macy.

I got to meet four delightful ladies in Sheila Robert’s best book yet! They each had problems and issues of their own and it was full-filling to watch how each one coped and moved forward to a much better life than they had before. Karissa, along with her young daughter, moved to a new location away from her ex who cheated on her with her best friend. She moved into a new house in a new neighborhood with a new job and made friends with ladies that lived near her. Karissa suggested they form a once a month book club with each having a turn picking the book to read. Margo just divorced and lost her job, Alice would not drive after a close call, and her sister Josie was just a grumpy, complaining older woman. My favorite expression from Josie (and she said it a lot) was pigeon poop! I loved how they supported and encouraged each other in hard times as well as good. The author Muriel Sterling, whom I’d met in previous books by Roberts, gave some helpful advice from quotes from her books. Not only did the quotes help the characters, but they also helped me. A wonderful story with easy to love characters that I hope will be continued in more books. It’s another one that would make a great movie! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author but was not required to write a review.
