Book Synopsis

Katherine Center's The Bodyguard is "My perfect 10 of a book. As funny and sweet as all the very best nineties rom-coms, but with Center's signature heart-tugging depth. I wish I could erase it from my mind just to read it again for the first time. A shot of pure joy."--Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Book Lovers

She's got his back.
Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she's an Executive Protection Agent (aka "bodyguard"), and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker.

He's got her heart.
Jack Stapleton's a household name--captured by paparazzi on beaches the world over, famous for, among other things, rising out of the waves in all manner of clingy board shorts and glistening like a Roman deity. But a few years back, in the wake of a family tragedy, he dropped from the public eye and went off the grid.

They've got a secret.
When Jack's mom gets sick, he goes home to the family's Texas ranch to help out. Only one catch: He doesn't want his family to know about his stalker. Or the bodyguard thing. And so Hannah--against her will and her better judgment--finds herself pretending to be Jack's girlfriend as a cover. Even though her ex, says no one will believe it.

What could possibly go wrong?
Hannah hardly believes it, herself. But the more time she spends with Jack, the more real it all starts to seem. And there lies the heartbreak. Because it's easy for Hannah to protect Jack. But protecting her own, long-neglected heart? That's the hardest thing she's ever done.

"Great rollicking fun! Prepare to laugh and swoon and grin your pants off."--Helen Hoang, New York Times bestselling author of The Heart Principle

"Absolutely, unequivocally delightful!"--Jodi Picoult, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wish You Were Here

My favorite Katherine Center book yet. It could not put it down, I read it in a day. The story swept you along just like the Brazos river, with unexpected twists and turns. The story takes you from feeling heartbreak to laughing over and over. The story has complex characters who develop through the story. I appreciate that we see characters in crisis and having mental health issues being treated with compassion and getting help. The author gives us a satisfying ending.

This was a fun book. Not particularly deep, but a lot of fun. Very much a Rom-Com rather than a strict romance. Read this if you need a few hours away from everything going on in the world. Read this is you just want some quiet time to yourself. Read this is you want to laugh out loud at some of the characters in the book. Read this is you want to identify what NOT to look for in ex-boyfriends!! Read this is you want to just roll along with the plot and believe the sometimes extraordinary story line. Your won't be disappointed. Not like other books I've read by Katherine Center in the past, but for this time and place, exactly what I, and many others, need to wind down with when everything seems to be going downhill in life!

Thanks to St. Martin’s Press & NetGalley for an Advance Readers Copy. All comments and opinions are my own. All I needed to know was that this was written by Katherine Center, and I had to get my hands on a copy. The other K. Center books that I’ve read have been 5 stars for me, and this was no exception. Hannah Brooks is an Executive Protection Agent (in other words: a bodyguard), hired - along with her team - to protect gorgeous movie star Jack Stapleton. Hannah looks like a mousy piano teacher, and the last person you would expect to know how to shoot a gun like a sharpshooter or throw a 250 pound linebacker to the ground with her bare hands. Jack is an outrageously sexy superstar actor, who is every woman’s dream boyfriend. I pictured Hannah as Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality or While You Were Sleeping and Jack as Paul Rudd (People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2021) or actor Patrick Dempsey. Jack needs protection because he is being followed by a crazy stalker. He wants to spend time with his ill mother at the family’s Texas ranch but no one can know he’s got a stalker, or that Hannah is his bodyguard. So she poses as his girlfriend. (Of course). They both agree it’s just an act for Jack’s family, but it’s doubly difficult for Hannah as she has just gotten dumped by her boyfriend, who left her for her best friend – both of whom are also on the surveillance team. This might sound like a corny set up, but the writing is excellent, the characters well-drawn, the banter witty AND clever, and the relationship quickly becomes endearing. Some parts of the plot are predictable in a comfortable, enjoyable way, and then a couple of twists come along to kick this novel up several notches beyond lightweight chick-lit. Due to Hannah’s family background, she has issues concerning grief, loss, love, and trust. She is commendable at compartmentalizing, which makes her a superior bodyguard. But the reader is privy to her thoughts and emotions - and it’s those thoughts and emotions that make this a meaningful, substantial novel. I highly recommend this feel-good read that works well as a beach book or an anytime novel.

Do you need a book that will have you laughing and entertained throughout? Hannah is a body guard who has to be knowledgeable and understand her surroundings in order to protect. She is a second degree black belt. When she is assigned to a movie star, he questioned why she is so small. After all body guards are supposed to big men, right? When she proves herself, he accepts her as his bodyguard, but one caveat is she has to pretend to be his girlfriend. Will she successfully complete this assignment, so she can win the London assignment that she is competing for against her ex boyfriend? This book is fun, light, and will even have you laughing at times! A perfect book to take on vacation!

This is one of those books that I didn’t want to ever end because I was having so much fun reading about Hannah and Jack and their misadventures. Hannah Brooks is a small woman in stature but she leaves a big footprint as an executive protection agent. Her current assignment is to protect superstar Jack Stapleton from a would-be stalker and against her better judgment, she pretends to be his girlfriend in order to stay undercover. Her role as a bodyguard soon takes a swift turn off the tracks when Hannah finds herself protecting her own heart just as much as she is protecting Jack. The story of these two totally different people is one for the record books and was laugh out loud humorous at times. There were also serious moments as Hannah came to some deep realizations about herself, her past and her choices. The lessons she learns as she travels the path of self-acceptance are invaluable to all of us who have ever dealt with self-esteem issues. The characters are mostly likable and relatable, although I must admit that Robby is a playboy who thinks he’s all that and more, so not particularly my cup of tea. I did enjoy meeting Wilbur, a man with deep problems and a huge talent for making birdhouses. Glenn, Hannah’s boss, was rough around the edges and very demanding but also practical and real-to-life. The plot moved along at a fast clip, much to my dismay, because I seriously did not want this story to end. I wanted to know more about Hank, Jack’s brother, and his parents and Hannah’s backstory. And I wanted to know more about Doghouse and Kelly who seemed kind of attracted to each other in a quirky kind of way. There are so many reasons to like this book and I cannot think of one reason why someone wouldn’t enjoy it. It’s light, contemporary fiction with some very original twists in a creative plot.
