Book Synopsis

From the co-host of chart-topping true crime podcast Morbid, a thrilling debut novel told from the dueling perspectives of a notorious serial killer and the medical examiner following where his trail of victims leads

Something dark is lurking in the Louisiana bayou: a methodical killer with a penchant for medical experimentation is hard at work completing his most harrowing crime yet, taunting the authorities who desperately try to catch up.

But forensic pathologist Dr. Wren Muller is the best there is. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of historical crimes, and years of experience working in the Medical Examiner's office, she's never encountered a case she couldn't solve. Until now. Case after case is piling up on Wren's examination table, and soon she is sucked into an all-consuming cat-and-mouse chase with a brutal murderer getting more brazen by the day.

An addictive read with straight-from-the-morgue details only an autopsy technician could provide, The Butcher and the Wren promises to ensnare all who enter.

Review Quotes

"Urquhart paints a tense and dangerous world for us right from the start and delivers it all with a skilled and evocative hand." --Aaron Mahnke, creator of the Lore podcast and author of The World of Lore series

"When someone who cuts open bodies for a living writes a story, it just rings true. The authenticity is there--more than just any writer can bring. Alaina has literally had her hands inside hundreds of people--and she delivers a forensic scientist vs. serial killer tale that cuts with precision and cuts to the bone. Dr. Wren Muller is poised to go on your Mount Rushmore of mystery heroes." --Billy Jensen, New York Times bestselling author of Chase Darkness with Me

"The Butcher and the Wren is perfect for fans of Dexter. Pitting a brutal serial killer against a determined medical examiner, the story is a pulse-pounding race against time. And the details the author weaves in due to her unique background as an autopsy tech heighten the realism and the suspense. Fans of Morbid will love the co-host's debut novel." --Kaira Rouda, USA Today and Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Favorite Daughter and Somebody's Home

"Can a medical examiner outsmart a serial killer? The Butcher and the Wren will keep you waiting for an answer until the last bloody page. Prepare to be disturbed. A deliciously dark debut." --Rea Frey, bestselling author for Not Her Daughter and Secrets of Our House

The writing style is that of a 5th grader. The grammar is awful. The idea is interesting just terribly executed. I’m honestly upset I wasted my time and money on this book.

I was only able to get through a couple of pages and really regret buying this. It’s simple, superficial, cliche and has no character development.

This book is beautifully written with both true crime and science elements to it. If you liked the show Dexter, you'll like this book as well.

I’m not a reader.. not in the slightest. But I’ve been listening to morbid religiously for the last few months and heard so much about the book that I wanted to give it a go. I went to my local target less than a month ago and bought it. I read the first chapter in my car in my driveway. I’m about 5 chapters away from finishing it.. a few chapters into Part 2. I have enjoyed every second of reading this book and next to listening to morbid, it’s been the highlight of my day/night. Keep being weird and beautiful and great. I can’t wait for the second one to come out.

If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers this book is a great quick read. My only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 4 is that there was a section of the book the pages were printed or cut wrong which cropped the author name and page name from the top of the pages and exposed the paper stock code at the bottom of those pages. I was honestly so into the story I didn’t even notice this while reading those pages only from flipping through the book and examining the quality. When the book arrived I laid down to read the first chapter or two before bed and became so engrossed I read half the book before putting it down! Love the author in all of her endeavors from morbid to the rewatcher Buffy the Vampire slayer!

Grammar and Writing Are Terrible

The amount of grammar errors in this book is akin to reading an essay by a fifth-grade student. Possibly worse. And it’s obvious that the author is not an author by trade, as her writing is less like storytelling and more like giving a recipe. This happened, then this happened, then she said this. Just a VERY lackluster writing style. But aside from all of that, the story itself is uncomfortable to read. It’s not often that you read a thriller where you get to read in real time what the killer is thinking and doing. I wish it had been written better than it was, because the sheer fact of that may have made it an enticing book.

I loved this book. I’m a listener of the Morbid podcast and I heard them talking about Alaina’s book often. I’m normally into young adult romance books so I was weary of purchasing this book since it isn’t my normal genre. I figured if I like listening to murder mystery stories I should enjoy reading them. I purchased the book and I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed the change of pace. This book is well written with a couple plot twists and I hope Alaina continues to write!

I love reading, but man this book made me Feel stupid. So many descriptive words per sentence, they just run on and don’t make sense. It’s so difficult to stay on tract and paint a picture in your head.

I liked this book enough to finish it in one day. I agree with a few other reviews that some parts, like the twist and timeline, are a bit confusing. Once I stuck it out though it all made sense and I could look past the "2d" characters. Very good story and can't wait for more.

I really wanted to love this book. And for a first book it's decent. The book has major potential and I'm hoping the next book will be better. I enjoyed the alternating view points but a lot of things were lacking. Wren had little depth to her. The butcher seemed very cliche and while there were some details that explained who he was and where he came from there were major holes in both their stories. I enjoyed the twist in the book but it wasn't explained well. The book seems to jump around time points without really explaining the shift and makes it confusing. The book seems to do more telling than showing especially with the autopsy things. All in all I would recommend and am hopeful of the second book. But I was overall disappointed

I really wanted to like this book. But it took some very confusing turns with no real explanation. And I hate to say it.. but it feels like as she was writing this she just right clicked to find synonyms for more descriptive words.. that didn’t actually describe anything. I like that it wasn’t predictable and it had a good story line. But it felt choppy and rushed with lots of short sentences that led no where. There was no real character development. It fell flat all the way through, especially the ending. The grammatical errors were a huge turn off as well.
