Book Synopsis

The Canadian General Election of 1984 provides a concise and readable guide to the recent federal election. Marrying journalism to social science, this survey reports on the campaign, examines the functions of the news media and the polls, and analyzes the results. Included are details of the vote nationally, regionally, by province and by constituency.

About the Author

Alan Frizzel has taught research methods at the School of Journalism at Carleton University for the past ten years. Well-known as a pollster and an analyst, he is the author of several academic articles on communications, politics and statistics. He has been a political commentator for news organizations in both Canada and the United Kingdom. With Anthony Westell, he co-directs the Carleton Journalism Poll, which surveys public opinion on political and other issues for major news media.

Anthony Westell was a legendary political journalist from the 1950s onward. He was a member of the Globe and Mail's editorial board, and later its Ottawa Bureau Chief, a national affairs columnist at the Toronto Star, editor of the Literary Review of Canada, and served as a senior associate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He taught journalism at Carleton University, becoming associate dean and later director of the School of Journalism and Communication there. He died on April 1, 2017.
