About the Book
"Peter Armstrong and Hank Colfax are best friends, but their lives couldn't be more different. Peter, the local pastor who is dedicated to his community, spending time visiting the flock, attending meetings, and, with the holiday season approaching, preparing for the Christmas service and live nativity. As a bartender, Hank serves a much different customer base at his family-owned tavern, including a handful of lonely regulars and the local biker gang. When Peter scoffs that Hank has it easy compared to him, the two decide to switch jobs until Christmas Eve. To their surprise, the responsibilities of a bartender and a pastor are similar, but taking on the other's work is more difficult than either Peter or Hank expected. As the two begin to see each other in a new light--and each discovers a new love to cherish--their lives are forever changed."--Book Synopsis

"With almost all of Debbie Macomber's novels, the reader is not only given a captivating story, but also a lesson in life."--New York Journal of Books "Bestseller and Hallmark Channel stalwart Macomber (Dear Santa) does it again with a candy cane-sweet holiday romance about two friends who swap lives for a week before Christmas. . . . An eclectic supporting cast--including cadres of strippers and bikers--and a comically disastrous climactic Christmas Eve church service make the narrative shine bright. It's exactly what readers want from a Macomber holiday outing."--Publishers Weekly "This light, sweet Christmas novel is perfect for someone looking for a chaste love story with a happy ending."--Booklist

The Christmas Spirit by Debbie Macomber is a heartwarming Christmas story. I like the way this story was told. A grandmother is telling two of her grandchildren a story. The tale she tells takes place in 1977. There are chapters in the present with the grandmother and the kids plus the chapters in the past. This is a cute story. I liked the characters. Hank and Pete are the main characters. They have been friends since elementary school. They are having lunch and each one is complaining about their job. It is a busy time for both of them with Christmas only a week away. One of them proposes they switch jobs for the week. Pete, a pastor, will run Hank’s bar while Hank will handle Pete’s pastoral duties. Hank will have the added task of dealing with Pete’s sister and church secretary, Grace Ann who is not Hank’s biggest fan. It is an enlightening experiment for both men. There is plenty of humor. I laughed often while reading The Christmas Spirit. There is a scene with Pete, a biker gang, and darts that tickled my funny bone. There is romance for Pete and Hank as well. Miracles do happen during the holidays. I like Debbie Macomber’s writing style. It is conversational and friendly. I felt like grandma was telling me a story. I just loved the ending. This is one book that you will want to read straight through (make sure you have your hot cocoa and cookies nearby). The Christmas Spirit is a cheerful Christmas tale with a job swap, scrumptious snowballs, a dripping roof, a mulish mule, a biker challenge, a striking server, straightlaced secretary, a dour donor, and party planning.
What a great way to start the holidays!

There is nothing better than reading a Macomber to enter in the holidays and The Christmas Spirit is the very best of them all. This is not a lengthy book and yet it tells the story of two men and their adventure of stepping into the other man’s shoes prior to the Christmas holiday. I loved the way this was set up with the Grandmother giving the children a story. Their reactions, cheers and jeers were fun and had me smiling. Each of the heroes had an interesting way of going about doing their new job as well as building a new or renewed relationship with the heroines. I was totally in love with Hank and Pete and giggled myself silly through some of their misadventures. Through it all, there was the sweetest feeling of unity, love and charity that was soothing to my own soul. The romance is sweet and fast, the characters entertaining and the book worth reading just to get to the most perfect feel good ending ever!

This story begins with Lilly and Lance visiting their Nana, which they love doing as she bakes cookies with them and tell them stories. This time around, Nana begins with a story. What they love most is being able to name the characters in the story. This time Lance chooses the name Hank in honor of their grandpa and Lily chooses Pete in honor of their uncle. So the story unfolds with Nana telling them the story of Pete and Hank who have been best friends since high school. Pete a minister and Hank a bartender decides to switch jobs until Christmas Eve. What will they discover about themselves and each other? How will the community react? Will they both finally meet the love of their lives? This heartwarming story dives into what it means to be best friends, what it means to look at another person from their perspective and situation, taking chances, finding love, etc. This book has a great story line, likable characters, and has enough love and drama that it will keep you entertained from the first page to the last! I really enjoyed this story and felt it was a heartfelt, fun and entertaining story! A great book to kick off your holiday season! A great book club pick as it will lead to many great discussions!
