About the Book

A story in rhyme, lovingly expressing that every child is born with a crown of features that gives them unique value as they grow.

Book Synopsis

We know our children are special, and now, in The Crown on Your Head, the incomparable Nancy Tillman expresses this universal feeling in the most touching of ways: Every child is born with a crown. The crown is everything that gives us unique value. Our crown will always be with us wherever we go, whatever we do.

Review Quotes

"...this is soothing, visually attractive, and makes for a comforting bedtime read-aloud." --Booklist

"Tillman adds another dreamy volume to her collection of self-esteem-building titles." --School Library Journal

"Parents and grandparents will love to read this aloud to their little ones..." --Kirkus Reviews

"There's something magical about the idea of intimacy with wild animals; spreads in which Tillman imagines such interactions, like the cover image of the child asleep astride a zebra, have special power, especially as they're rendered with photograph-like verisimilitude." --Publishers Weekly

"Nancy Tillman returns to the theme that she celebrated in her poetic essay book On the Night You Were Born--every child is special and beloved....While the re-iterated affirmations on each page may seem a bit much for the less sentimental types, there is no question that Tillman's message is one that young children need to hear." --Children's Literature

Great message, perfect as a board book

Let me start off by saying, I adore ALL Nancy Tillman books. She simply does not write a bad children's book and "The Crown on Your Head" is no exception. It is beautifully written with such sweet pictures. My baby boy loves it even though he doesn't understand the words just yet. This is one of the few Tillman books that I think is actually more impactful in the shorter, board book version. It references a make-believe crown on the top of every child's head that represents their true uniqueness and it doesn't matter who you are, or what you look like — you too have a crown and are special just for being you. Such a good message for kids. And sure enough, I tear up reading the last page every time because it just hits my mama heart just right. So good.
