The New York Times bestselling author of the "heart-stopping tale of survival and heroism" (People) The Book of Lost Names returns with an evocative coming-of-age World War II story about a young woman who uses her knowledge of the wilderness to help Jewish refugees escape the Nazis--until a secret from her past threatens everything.

After being stolen from her wealthy German parents and raised in the unforgiving wilderness of eastern Europe, a young woman finds herself alone in 1941 after her kidnapper dies. Her solitary existence is interrupted, however, when she happens upon a group of Jews fleeing the Nazi terror. Stunned to learn what's happening in the outside world, she vows to teach the group all she can about surviving in the forest--and in turn, they teach her some surprising lessons about opening her heart after years of isolation. But when she is betrayed and escapes into a German-occupied village, her past and present come together in a shocking collision that could change everything.

Inspired by incredible true stories of survival against staggering odds, and suffused with the journey-from-the-wilderness elements that made Where the Crawdads Sing a worldwide phenomenon, The Forest of Vanishing Stars is a heart-wrenching and suspenseful novel from the #1 internationally bestselling author whose writing has been hailed as "sweeping and magnificent" (Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author), "immersive and evocative" (Publishers Weekly), and "gripping" (Tampa Bay Times).

Five Star Historical Fiction Available 7.6.21 The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel Wow- what an incredible piece of literature. I can not tell you how much I loved this novel! It’s hands down 5 STAR AMAZING! Absolutely a must read! The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel is a message of love, hope, faith, but this novel is so,so much more! It is an incredible historical account of the suffering and loss, but more importantly the survival and unending perseverance of the Jewish people during WWII. “-they survived the war because they found trust, life, and hope in the darkness” (Kristin Harmel-authors note) Yona, Zus, Rosalie...all the characters are the embodiment of courage and strength. Kristin Harmel is so talented in her storytelling, The Forest of Vanishing Star is truly an amazing tribute in remembrance to those who have been lost and what a story to share in a time when we need our history to be honored and remembered; when we need those stories of hope and light in the face of the darkest times. “In the times of greatest darkness, the light always shines through, because there are people who stand up to do brave, decent things.” (pg168). I can not recommend this novel enough!! Absolutely a must read!

This wonderful book grew even more wonderful about halfway through when I flipped to the back and read the the Author's Note before reading on. Learning the history on which the story is based made the story seem so much more realistic, while retaining its mystical bent. I read and review mostly Christian fiction; this book isn't that, but it does have spiritual aspects and is tastefully written. The story will appeal to fans of historical fiction as it is set in a forest in Poland during World War II, and includes characters with very real struggles of the times. The theme of character being shaped by hard times is very well formed, and one that is as pertinent to the present as to the past. I am grateful to have received a complementary copy of The Forest of Vanishing Stars from Simon & Schuster via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kristin Harmel writes another remarkable WWll novel, where Yona, at the age of 2, is kidnapped by Jerusza from her family in Berlin. She and Jerusza live and travel around in the forest. Jerusza teaches Yona important life lessons and survival skills. When Jerusza dies at 102, 20 years latter, Yona is left to figure out what to do with her life. Will Yona try to go back to her parents or will she choose to live her own life? This book will having you turning the pages to find out. Kristin Harmel draws the reader into the book where they feel like they are right alongside Yona in her journey. This book leaves a lasting impression, so you will be thinking about it from start to finish. Definitely one to add to your TBR list.
