Book Synopsis

"A perfect storm of thrilling suspense and intricate plot twists that will leave readers breathless!" --Nancy Mehl, author of the Ryland & St. Clair series

On a remote Outer Banks island, a serial killer collects his prized specimens. And to stop him, an FBI agent must confront his own twisted past.

FBI agent Tiberius Granger has seen his share of darkness. But a new case sets him on edge. It's not just the macabre way both victims--found posed in front of lighthouses--are tattooed with flowers that match their names. There's also the unsettling connection to the woman Ty once loved and to the shadowy cult they both risked everything to escape.

Bexley Hemmingway's sister has gone missing, and she'll do anything to find her--including teaming up with Ty. That may prove a mistake, and not just because Ty doesn't know he's the father of her teenaged son. It seems the killer is taunting Ty, drawing everyone close to him into deeper danger.

As the slashing winds and rain of a deadly hurricane approach the coast of North Carolina, the search leads Ty and Bex to an island that hides a grisly secret. But in his quest for the truth, Ty has ignored the fact that this time, he's not just the hunter. Every move has been orchestrated by a killer into a perfect storm of terror, and they will need all their skills to survive...

Thrilling Suspense

If you love true crime shows, crime scene investigations, or reading authors style like Jaime Jo Wright then you will enjoy this. The creep factor is just enough to keep you turning pages quickly, but be forewarned it kept me awake trying to solve the who. I love books that keep me guessing and this did exactly that as I flip flopped and still missed it. This is the best suspense I have read this year as it kept me engaged and the interesting aspect for me was the former ties Ty and Bexley had to a cult. It seemed like you were watching the unfolding of the serial killer as the descriptive writing made it real. There was a lot going on in this book but it never felt overwhelming and although it has that dark gothic feel it still carries that thread of faith and hope to lighten the storyline. Reading this is an exciting experience you don’t want to miss. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit/author. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

What does a family cult, flower tattoos, a serial killer, incoming hurricane, a private island, teenage love and FBI special crimes unit all have in common? More than you could even imagine! A serial killer is on the prowl and he seeks women with names that are flowers. Women start disappearing and the special FBI unit is called in to the Outer Banks. When bodies start appearing at lighthouses with flower tattoos covering them, time begins to tick away. The killer must be found before more women are murdered and before a deadly hurricane strikes the area. But he is ever elusive always staying one step ahead of the FBI. This was an edge of my seat, heart pounding story that couldn’t be put down for fear I’d miss something the killer was doing. This author is a master of creepy, weird suspense that alway keeps me engaged. The characters were so real that I almost wanted to say a prayer for them when they got in a tight situation. A few tears were shed toward the end that were sad as well as happy and emotional. Few books bring me to tears as this one did. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author but was not required to write a review.

The cry of the poor comes to him and he hears the cry of the afflicted. Struck down but not destroyed, hard-pressed but not crushed. The SCU, Strange Case Unit, has been called to the Outer Banks to solve the case of missing women. Some are found posed by various lighthouses - others are still missing and have been for many months. Can they find them before they are murdered as well? A story that is sure to make you look at many things differently, not the least of which are tattoos and flowers. This thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering who is out to hurt Ty and why this is so important to the perpetrator. Finding his long lost girlfriend and a son he never knew he had only adds to the mystery. Will he finally learn to believe and trust that the Lord has everything in control, or will the hurricane wipe away any chance for him to be saved? This early copy of Book 3 in the Strange Crimes Unit was received through Love Inspired Suspense and NetGalley. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.

Jessica Patch hit the ball out of the park with this book. The story has excellent characters, wit and humor, mystery and suspense, a touch of romance, and a well thought out plot that will keep you guessing. I appreciate so much that even though this book holds the darkness of a serial killer, the author does a wonderful job of bringing Christ into the forefront of the story and shows his never-ending goodness. Patch is a next level author. She is extremely gifted with words and the ability to keep you glued to the pages. *A big thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Gritty Christian Thriller

5 out of 5 stars
LGS - 9 months ago
The Garden Girls is a dark, gritty psychological thriller with little flashes of spiritual light throughout. The main characters are complex because they were raised in a cult and then left as teens and went on to become productive adults. The romance between Tiberius and Bexley is very rocky, but there is an HEA for them at the end. I enjoyed the camaraderie of the FBI team. Their banter is a break from the heaviness of the evil. Their loyalty to each other is inspiring. I was shocked by the villain. My mind hadn't even gone there at all. The labyrinthine plot moves quickly. There are some heartbreaking moments, many shocking ones, and a few very sweet and tender ones as well. I would read more from author Jessica R. Patch.

Psych Thriller with a Faith Foundation

I don’t recall the last time that a psychological thriller made me cry, but this one did. The characters are so real and relatable that they became like friends and I hated the thought that evil was all around them, waiting to destroy them. The SCU team travels to the Outer Banks, a setting I am familiar with, so I enjoyed the setting. They are there to find a serial kidnapper who is taking women and tattooing them with flowers, then discarding them at a local lighthouse. I loved having the team all together working on solving the crime. My favorite SCU members are always Owen, because of his sense of humor and joking attitude, and Violet because she is so intuitive that it’s just weird. These are the characters that I would like to invite to dinner and have them entertain me with their wit and intelligence. The pace of the book is at a breakneck speed, racing from one twist and red herring to another and ultimately arriving at the surprising conclusion. Fans of psych thrillers who enjoy the films and books of the late Alfred Hitchcock will be enthralled with the SCU, their crime solving abilities and the way the author portrays each of the members as real people with a life outside of solving crimes. Crying at some parts and gasping at others, I made it to the end and then I just wanted another SCU book to read already. Faith plays a foundational part in the story, but it does not overwhelm or take over the story. It is an important part of some of the character’s lives and that added to the depth of the story. The addiction is real…the quest for justice is real. And these books are amazing! This book is part of a series but it can be read and thoroughly enjoyed as a standalone.
