Description
About the Book
An anonymous letter from a Very Disappointed Reader sends a novelist back to the lake where she spent her childhood summers in order to prove that what she wrote happened the way she'd remembered. But the truth turns out to be far more complicated, showing that sometimes the story we think we're telling is another story altogether.Book Synopsis
"Emotions leap off the page in this deeply personal book . . . . Expertly written."--Library Journal***
The best fiction simply tells the truth.
But the truth is never simple.
When novelist Kendra Brennan moves into her grandfather's old cabin on Hidden Lake, she has a problem and a plan. The problem? An inflammatory letter from A Very Disappointed Reader. The plan? To confront Tyler, her childhood best friend's brother--and the man who inspired the antagonist in her first book. If she can prove that she told the truth about what happened during those long-ago summers, perhaps she can put the letter's claims to rest and meet the swiftly approaching deadline for her next book.
But what she discovers as she delves into the murky past is not what she expected. While facing Tyler isn't easy, facing the consequences of her failed friendship with his sister, Cami, may be the hardest thing she's ever had to do.
Plumb the depths of the human heart with this emotional exploration of how a friendship dies, how we can face the unforgivable, and how even those who have been hurt can learn to love with abandon.
***
"Bartels explores troubled relationships, questions of truth and memory, and how stories are created and told."--Booklist
"Erin Bartels has become one of those authors that I read every book she writes without even reading the synopsis or looking at the cover. The stories are just that good and the tension and internal conflict her characters have intensifies with each story. The Girl Who Can Breathe Under Water is no exception."--Write-Read-Life
"Erin Bartels skillfully weaves threads of love, hope, forgiveness, and restoration in a tapestry that also portrays abuse, despair, hatred, and brokenness. Subtly and effectively, Bartels sets her novel on the foundation of Christian hope and God's sovereignty over all things."--The Banner
"Bartels continues to amaze and this--at least until the next book--is her best. It's a bit early in the year to be talking about awards and accolades, but I'm not convinced it's premature. Truly, an outstanding book."--Life Is Story

Intricate Story of Self-Exploration and Acceptance
5 out of 5 stars
VickleaW - 3 years ago
The story of Kendra Brennan, author, coming to terms with her past is a sweeping saga about forgiveness and redemption in extremely difficult circumstances. Kendra has published her first book and a letter from “A Very Disappointed Reader” has her returning to her grandfather’s cabin in Hidden Lake in order to confront the writer. In her attempt to find the writer, she goes on a journey of self-exploration that inevitably leads to acceptance of her responsibility about the events in her past and forgiveness of those who have hurt her. She also meets a new love interest in the form of German translator Andreas, a man who is comfortable with who he is and ready to embrace the future. The story itself was well-written, intricate and detailed and engaging. The characters were realistic, at times bringing tears of frustration to my eyes because they were unaware of what they were doing to each other. As part of the Revell Reads Blogger Program, I receiveall opinions expressed are my own.

"Once there was a girl who could breathe under water . . . " The words to an unfinished story. Much like the life of the one who wrote them. Novelist Kendra Brennan's first and only manuscript to date was a best seller, so naturally her fans (and publisher, and editor) were clamoring for more. At least most of her fans; one person's anonymous letter sends Kendra scrambling back to where it all began, her grandfather's cabin on the shores of Hidden Lake . . . hoping for respite, for inspiration, and quite possibly for closure. "Your book . . . is the work of a selfish opportunist who was all too ready to monetize the suffering of others. Did you ever consider . . . . " Maybe she hadn't considered, for you see, the book characterized truth for the ones who knew . . . perhaps Kendra had been just a bit too realistic, one of her fictional counterparts had recognized their role and wasn't happy about it. . . . nor should they be . . . right? Her memories surrounding summers on the lake with her grandfather and friends got a little fuzzy when she overthought them. Those experiences were the best and the worst of her life, which is why she stopped going in the first place. Now she's back. Her grandfather is no longer living and Kendra is . . . living with a deadline looming for her second novel and writer's block sitting squarely in her brain. Would confrontation erase those ugly words from her head? What an interesting story . . . .about life, about friendships, about convoluted relations, about brokenness, about forgiveness, about love. . . . the right kind, the honest kind, the forever kind. Everyone suffers when there are secrets. And every secret holder needs someone who will believe their story. I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.
Not Christian

I have read and enjoyed books by Erin Bartels before and I did enjoy this book also. The characters were quite well developed. The story flowed quite well. To begin, the story was a slow start and quite confused. It took a while before I realized the main character, Kendra, was having thoughts/talks in her head with her friend who was not with her. The story jumps between these thoughts and what is actually going on. Another area that bothers me, and this is just my personal thoughts, but the book is in no way Christian. It is a clean book but not Christian even though published by Revell, a Christian book publisher. There was a random reference to church attendance long ago and a prayer over a meal but that was the extent. On the negative side, there was some drinking and getting drunk. Overall, if you want to read an interesting, clean book this is for you. If you are expecting a typical Christian novel you will be disappointed. I give this book a solid 3 out of 5 stars.

Erin Bartels is an amazing wordsmith. This is evident in The Girl Who Could Breathe Under Water. It is an intense story of personal and interpersonal struggles. In spite of the wonderful language in this book, it is slow moving, and the characters unengaging. I stopped reading at thirty-five percent as my thoughts strayed more and more to my next read rather than on the current one. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of his book from Revell via NetGalley. All opinions expressed here are my own.
