*This paperback edition includes exclusive bonus material!*

Friday night. The party of the summer. Four teens ride home together. Only one never makes it.

When high school sophomore Chris Moore is tragically killed in a car crash, Armstrong Prep is full of questions. Who was at the wheel? And more importantly, who was at fault?

Eighteen-year-old Spencer Sandoval wishes she knew. As rumors swirl that her ex, Ethan, was the reckless driver, she can't bring herself to defend him. And their messy breakup has nothing to do with it - she can't remember anything from that night, not even what put her in that car with Ethan, Chris, and Tabby Hill, the new loner in school.

The hunt for answers intensifies when a local true crime podcast takes an interest in the case, pushing Spencer further into the depths of this sinister mystery. Was it all just a night out that went very wrong? And is it a coincidence that all but Chris is on Armstrong's esteemed honor roll, the Headmaster's List? In a place ruled by pedigree and privilege, the truth can only come at a deadly price.

Set against the glitz and glamour of an elite LA private school, Melissa de la Cruz's explosive YA thriller is an addictive mystery perfect for fans of Only Murders in the Building and A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.

Mysterious

I’m going to say that this book was mysterious and entertaining but also that it took a little while to get into and I felt it had some lose ends. After a fatal car accident three classmates have survived. In the car that night were: our main character Spencer, her ex boyfriend Ethan, loner Tabby and Chris (who died in the accident). Chris is the only one with full memory of the event. Spencer hit her head badly enough that she has memory loss of the night of the crash, but she knows it doesn’t make sense that.she was in the car with Ethan since they’d just broken up that night. Ethan is being accused of being drunk, maybe high, driving recklessly and causing Chris’ death. And Ethan isn’t fighting the accusations very strongly. Spencer is also sure that Ethan was sober. He’s been sober for a year and she knows he was that night too. Spencer takes it upon herself to dig into the case and find out what really happened. At first, it might be partly because she’s trying to get her memory back. But then it’s so clear to her thar things don’t line up and she won’t stop till she gets to the bottom of everything. I’ll admit that I figured out most of what really happened pretty quickly. I wouldn’t call the reveal “shocking”. But the why, the who, the details of the crash, those are parts you don’t find out until the end. I’m going to stop here on my review on BookishFirst. I will add additional comments on Goodreads because I will be marking that review as containing potential spoilers.

Predictable Mystery

I'm going to start off by saying I'm one of the worst mystery readers out there. Because I have no self control and will flip to the back of the book. I always spoil something for myself. In this case I pretty much spoiled the whodunit and the why. With that being said, I don't know if it really mattered that it was spoiled for me because I didn't particularly like the ending anyway. Melissa de la Cruz books are a hit or miss for me and unfortunately this was more of a miss. I really enjoyed Spencer. She is our main character and I found her to be engaging. She was in a horrific car accident but something doesn't feel right about the way it went down. She follows that feeling and with great tenacity eventually uncovers the truth about that night. I thought she felt very realistic and the struggle with her pain and pain management (prescription pills) was handled well. It was a quick read and well written. I feel like the cover and summary are a bit misleading. It feels like the Headmaster's List should have a bigger impact, but it really didn't have a big part to play. I also feel like it was lacking more of a sense of danger or conspiracy. It was all was fairly tame in terms of mystery and risk. The ending was wrapped up so quickly that it felt incomplete. I will always give Melissa de la Cruz's writing a try but this just ended up being a little flat.

Fast paced YA thriller

The Headmaster's List opens with a horrific car accident after an end-of-summer party, in which one of the four students is killed, and the main character, Spencer, is seriously injured with head trauma and broken bones. Her ex-boyfriend Ethan was driving and is charged with reckless driving and manslaughter. Spencer can't remember anything about that night but has the nagging feeling that something is wrong. Spencer, along with Ethan's best friend Jackson, investigate the circumstances and events on the night of the crash. The students all attend an elite LA private school. The formatting of the book which includes multiple points of view, police reports, and a local crime podcast kept the pages turning and the pacing fast. As Spencer tries to piece together the truth, while dealing with her injuries, post-traumatic stress and academic load, it becomes apparent that someone wants her to stop seeking answers. The story ends with a couple of big twists. There were some aspects that were unrealistic such as the sloppiness of the police investigation and Spencer's apparently endless prescription of Vicodin, and her parents lack of awareness of it. The Headmaster's List is a gripping addition to the YA thriller genre.

Decent But Not Great

When Chris Moore, a high school sophomore, is horrifically killed in a car accident, Armstrong Prep is filled with questions. Who was driving? And who was at fault? Eighteen-year-old Spencer Sandoval wishes she knew. Rumors that her ex, Ethan, was the driver is spreading and she can't seem to defend him. She can't remember anything of that night, other than the messy breakup. Why was she in the car with Ethan, Chris, and Tabby Hill, the new loner at school. When a true crime podcast made by Spencer's classmate starts hunting for answers, Spencer is pushed into the depths of this dark mystery. Was it all the result of just a night that went horribly wrong? Is it a coincidence that everyone in that car, except Chris, was on Armstrong's esteemed honor roll, the Headmaster's List? In a town that is run by privilege, the truth can come at a deadly price. I thought this one was decent but not great. I had guessed the ending from almost the very beginning so nothing was surprising to me. Also, not a huge fan of how the author ended some of the relationships.

Mediocre YA mystery/thriller

3 out of 5 stars

A car crash leaves a 15-year-old dead. Eighteen-year-old Spencer, recovering from injuries, struggles to find out exactly what happened. Did her ex, Ethan, really cause the crash? THE HEADMASTER’S LIST was a mediocre to average YA mystery/thriller read. I figured out one twist at the very beginning and the second somewhere in the middle of the book, so that took a bit of the enjoyment out of it. A lot of the plot felt cookie-cutter predictable for the genre and the characters could have been more developed. I did like that snippets of the crime podcast were included. That interjected a fun change of pace. The introduction of the nonbinary character felt awkward and came across as though they were included for the sake of checking off a diversity box and not because the author felt that including nonbinary character(s) was actually meaningful. I was disappointed in the way posttraumatic stress was portrayed and the lack of medically addressing this for the character (i.e., professional mental health services) but rather throwing a service dog at the situation immediately, though I see why the dog was included (plot device). THE HEADMASTER’S LIST would be good for those who enjoy reasonably predictable mystery/thrillers and those who are fans of prep school settings.
