Book Synopsis
An instant New York Times bestseller! "This is an absolute, can't-put-it-down thriller. . . . It's truly a wild ride that had me flying through chapter after chapter--which I think is the perfect way to kick off your year of reading."--Reese Witherspoon (Reese's Book Club Pick January 2023)Armed with only hazy memories, a woman who long ago witnessed her friend's sudden, mysterious death, and has since spent her life trying to forget, sets out to track down answers. What she uncovers, deep in the woods, is hardly to be believed. . . . Maya was a high school senior when her best friend, Aubrey, dropped dead in front of the enigmatic man named Frank whom they'd been spending time with all summer. Seven years later, Maya lives in Boston with a loving boyfriend and is kicking the secret addiction that has allowed her to cope with what happened years ago, the gaps in her memories, and the lost time that she can't account for. But her past comes rushing back when she comes across a recent YouTube video in which a young woman suddenly keels over and dies in a diner while sitting across from none other than Frank. Plunged into the trauma that has defined her life, Maya heads to her Berkshires hometown to relive that fateful summer--the influence Frank once had on her and the obsessive jealousy that nearly destroyed her friendship with Aubrey. At her mother's house, she excavates fragments of her past and notices hidden messages in her deceased Guatemalan father's book that didn't stand out to her earlier. To save herself, she must understand a story written before she was born, but time keeps running out, and soon, all roads are leading back to Frank's cabin. . . . Utterly unique and captivating, The House in the Pines keeps you guessing about whether we can ever fully confront the past and return home.

I didn’t enjoy this book AT ALL. It doesn’t even get interesting until almost 125 pages in, part of the book is written in Spanish with no translation, and it’s extremely anticlimactic. Would not recommended

Reading this book was a waste of time. I will go back to Jeneva Rose books. I like to try different author sometimes but I didn’t like this book. I would get a refund if I could.

How was this book on a “must read list?” I had NO CLUE about the plot until page 123. Shallow characters and shallow plot.

This is one of those books that has great potential, but it just doesn’t live up to what it could’ve been. It could’ve been written in a few different ways that would’ve had a bigger impact than it does. It is disappointing.

This was the worst. I was so bored the entire time. The “climax” was terrible. Don’t waste your time. I haven’t been this upset about a book in a decade. Terrible.

I was very excited to read, felt like the Reese’s Club seal gave it a false hope. Was a very bland read, predictable and seemed to be finished in a hurry. Lacked any real thrill.

I wish I could read this book again for the first time. SO FREAKING GOOD. I love Ana’s way of description where I can literally feel the rain on my skin or smell whatever she’s smelling.
Really fun, suspensful read!

Loved the suspense and incorporation of magic realism (realismo magico) which is often prevalent in a lot of Latin American literature. It’s a real page turner and the author’s clear style of writing makes it an easy read right from the get go. I finished it in 2.5 days - I just couldn’t put it down. I could see this not only being made into a movie but also has great sequel potential.
Just buy it!

I’ll start by saying I couldn’t put it down! I had to finish it once it started, however there were times when it was hard to follow & the storylines didn’t make sense. I like the concept of the book, but the execution was just okay. Wouldn’t be in my top recommendations, but I’m not unhappy I read it!
Great read!

I was excited to read this book, but it was a huge letdown, largely because of the writing. I expected more, especially from a Reese’s Book Club pick! I did like the concept of the book. It was an interesting idea that had a lot of potential. But the writing was so choppy and hard to follow that it took away any enjoyment I might have had from the story. The switching back and forth between timelines with no indication when it was happening was really frustrating. I spent way too much time to figure out what timeline it was even on. It didn’t flow at all. A simple indicator of what year it was whenever the timeline changed would’ve solved that problem. I respect the author’s vision and what they were trying to achieve, and I pushed through finishing the book because I kept hoping it would get better, but it just didn’t.
