About the Book
A history of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict told from the Palestinian perspective, arguing the period since the Balfour Declaration of 1917 has amounted to a hundred years of colonial war against the Palestinians.Book Synopsis
A landmark history of one hundred years of war waged against the Palestinians from the foremost US historian of the Middle East, told through pivotal events and family history
In 1899, Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, mayor of Jerusalem, alarmed by the Zionist call to create a Jewish national home in Palestine, wrote a letter aimed at Theodore Herzl: the country had an indigenous people who would not easily accept their own displacement. He warned of the perils ahead, ending his note, "in the name of God, let Palestine be left alone." Thus Rashid Khalidi, al-Khalidi's great-great-nephew, begins this sweeping history, the first general account of the conflict told from an explicitly Palestinian perspective. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members--mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists--The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age. He highlights the key episodes in this colonial campaign, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the destruction of Palestine in 1948, from Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon to the endless and futile peace process. Original, authoritative, and important, The Hundred Years' War on Palestine is not a chronicle of victimization, nor does it whitewash the mistakes of Palestinian leaders or deny the emergence of national movements on both sides. In reevaluating the forces arrayed against the Palestinians, it offers an illuminating new view of a conflict that continues to this day.Review Quotes

--Shelf Awareness (starred review) "One of the many merits of the book is the way Khalidi uses his family and his own life experience to tell this tragic, yet-to-be-righted, story. . . . While his condemnation of Israel's policies and historic Zionism is unrelenting, Khalidi has straight talk for the Palestinians on the question of compromises."
--Balfour Project "Rashid Khalidi enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the greatest living historians of the Palestinian people. . . . Khalidi is a sophisticated and unapologetic exponent of an increasingly widely held view of the Israel-Palestine conflict."

--Ahdaf Soueif, author of The Map of Love "With wisdom and insight, Rashid Khalidi lays to rest the illusions of Israelis and Palestinians alike. He combines brilliant scholarship with extensive first-hand experience of war and diplomacy in a call for mutual acceptance and equality of rights as the only way to end a century of conflict. An outstanding book."
--Eugene Rogan, author of The Arabs: A History "A riveting and original work, the first to explore the century of war against the Palestinians on the basis of deep immersion in their struggle--a work enriched by solid scholarship, vivid personal experience, and acute appreciation of the concerns and aspirations of the contending parties in this deeply unequal conflict."
--Noam Chomsky, author of Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy "Brave, brilliant, and magisterial, this outstanding work of historical scholarship is also full of high drama and fascinating narrative. Rashid Khalidi presents compelling evidence for a reevaluation of the conventional Western view of the subject in a book that is a milestone in the study of the Arab-Israeli conflict."
--Avi Shlaim, author of The Iron Wall: Israel and the Arab World "This is the first true people's history of the hundred-year struggle of the Palestinian people, a beautifully written text and a call for justice and self-determination."
--Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, author of An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States "A meticulous account of Palestinian history that provides a brilliant framework for the study of settler colonialism on a global scale. You can disagree with Khalidi but you cannot afford to miss the opportunity of arguing with him."
--Homi K. Bhabha, author of The Location of Culture "Through a scholarly narrative rooted in his own family history, Rashid Khalidi offers a fresh interpretation that shows Palestine as a violent, grinding fault in the shifting tectonic plates of Great Power politics. This book is sure to become a classic account."
--Elizabeth F. Thompson, author of Justice Interrupted: The Struggle for Constitutional Government in the Middle East "This book is a remarkable interweaving of three distinctive strands: a deeply researched history of the struggle between Zionist aspirations and Palestinian resistance; an analytical framework that places the conflict within the context of settler colonialism; and a personal family history that brings the narrative alive. Newcomers and specialists alike will learn much from reading this sweeping account."
--William B. Quandt, author of Peace Process: American Diplomacy and the Arab-Israeli Conflict Since 1967 "Learned and clear-eyed, this compelling history of the long war to deny Palestinian rights exposes a century of blunders, misjudgments, and willful deceptions. Highly recommended."
--Stephen M. Walt, coauthor of The Israel Lobby "Beautifully written and accessible, this book is an invaluable examination of the Palestinian-Zionist encounter as a struggle against settler-colonial domination, not as an issue of conflict resolution--a vital difference, necessary for a deeper understanding of the war and for its meaningful resolution. The Hundred Years' War on Palestine illustrates, at its core, the refusal of Palestinians to accept their own defeat and their desire to live as equals with Israelis in a land they are destined to share."
--Sara Roy, author of Hamas and Civil Society in Gaza: Engaging the Islamist Social Sector "As in any book about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, there is ample room for debate and controversy. And as in any book by Rashid Khalidi, there is history, erudition, politics and passion aplenty. There is also his tenacious conviction that 'there are now two peoples in Palestine, irrespective of how they came into being, and the conflict between them cannot be resolved as long as the national existence of each is denied by the other.'"
--Rob Malley, International Crisis Group CEO and White House Coordinator for the Middle East under President Barack Obama "Rashid Khalidi makes clear that the Zionists could not have created modern day Israel without abundant help from Britain and the United States. A must read for the growing number of people who are interested in understanding the real roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
--John J. Mearsheimer, coauthor of The Israel Lobby "With moral passion and analytical rigor, Khalidi skillfully unearths the narrative of a long and bitter national conflict, providing a multitude of timely, acute, and original insights. This compelling book is a must read."
--Zeev Sternhell, author of The Anti-Enlightenment Tradition "In a painfully sober analysis of what made Zionism, an anachronistic colonialist enterprise, so successful, Rashid Khalidi also shows how Palestinians defy fatalism and refuse to vanish. His book is a tribute and contribution to his people's perseverance."
--Amira Hass, author of Drinking the Sea at Gaza "This fascinating and instructive blend of autobiography and history should be read by anybody who wants to understand the tragedy of Palestine and the Palestinians."
--Patrick Cockburn, author of The Rise of the Islamic State "Rashid Khalidi has produced a sophisticated and insightful historical analysis of the Palestine-Israel conflict that is enriched by deep knowledge, clear and critical views, and his own experiences of key moments."
--Ian Black, author of Enemies and Neighbors: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel, 1917-2017 "This searing account makes clearer than ever the often deliberately understated colonial nature of the Palestinian experience--and it reminds us of the Palestinians' extraordinary capacity to remain steadfast despite the local and global forces arrayed against them."
--Saree Makdisi, author of Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation of Culture

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This book was a powerful and eye-opening read. What I appreciated most was how Khalidi weaves together historical facts with personal family stories, it made the book feel grounded and deeply human. He frames the Israeli-Palestine conflict as a century long struggle against colonialism. It’s not a legit read, but it’s incredibly informative and thought-provoking. I’d recommend this book if you’re trying to understand the conflict from a more personal and historically rich perspective. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It took me a little over a week to read this book. I personally thought it was really interesting and great understanding of what is happening in Palestine. I thought the author did a good job engaging and describing everything really well. I enjoyed the some of the pictures that were added in some of the pages. This book really detailed some history which I appreciated. The book itself is great quality. Overall I recommend this book for your next read. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Every person I know who has read it has given it a 5 star rating. Thorough and well researched history of Palestine by a scholar who also shares personal stories of his family history. It is critical to understand the history of what is currently happening in the Middle East and this is one book that gives great insights and perspectives to consider. I will be passing this along to friends and family! I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Rashid Kahlidi’s The Hundred Years War in Palestine is an informative and thought provoking read on the turbulent and often tragic history of Palestine through 2017. The book frames the Palestinian experience as one of ongoing colonial confrontation rather than a series of isolated conflicts. The emphasis on international complicity and regional dynamics makes it not just a history of Palestine but commentary on global politics as well. I’d love to see an updated edition that brings the story forward to 2025 in light of the ongoing Gaza crisis and renewed international attention. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Lightweight book with heavy content. Illustrations, maps and document prints make it more lively and readable. The narrative is compelling due to historical context and personal accounts woven together. The authors analysis presents a Palestinian perspective which is often marginalized in the mainstream Zionist media voices. A great read to understand the enduring struggle, not just over land. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Received this book as a gift. It’s a great read if you are into reading from the palestenian view point. This book includes excerpts from letters as well as accounts from memories of families from this time period which fit into the book about two different subjects that want to claim the same land. The accounts of this historic event will lead you down a historic path. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I haven’t gotten around to reading this entire book yet because it is really dense. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just heavy! the conflict between the Israeli and Palestinians is very complex and it’s interesting finding out about the origins of the conflict and what’s happening now as a result of things that happened many, many years ago. If you’re a history buff this is the book for you. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ll be honest, history was never my favorite subject but as I approach my 40’s, have children of my own and a husband whose job is deeply rooted in the current affairs of the world, I’ve become become interested in current, ongoing, and past conflicts of the world. This is a heartwrenching read that really opens your eyes to what the Palestinian people have been through. We often get one side of this conflict and this book gives you the other side we don’t often hear about. I highly recommend this book if you want to educate yourself beyond what the mainstream media tells you without feeling antisemitic. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is Rashid Khalidi’s eighth book, a New York Times best seller. The summary claims this is the “first general account of the conflict told from an explicitly Palestinian perspective” which I found compelling. However, the book reads heavily like a history text, often missing the nuance of storytelling in favor of packing the text with dates and too many names to easily digest. I enjoy historical content, but I definitely prefer to consume it in a lighter manner. If you appreciate historical accuracy, immense details, and 45 pages of source notes - this would be a good book for you. If you like storytelling with a bit of whimsy, I’d skip this one. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This book is outside of my usual reading style, much more scholarly and heavier. That being said I’m glad I stuck with it. In my opinion it offers an unbiased perspective, something I’m sure is not easy to do. I do however feel that the lessons and perspectives written could be viewed differently depending on your own history and I dare say political views. The book offers the history of this area and people/groups involved and if you don’t have a deep understanding will help readers better understand the current conflict taking place. A passage that moved me and truly open my eyes is the following: “There is scarcely a Palestinian family that has not been touched by loss; of land, of a home, of freedom, of a loved one or of hope. These are not abstractions, but daily realities that have shaped generations.” There were many quiet passages from this novel that have been running through my mind and heart since reading this. However, with everything going on overseas, I felt it was appropriate to be more informed and hear from a different perspective. If you’re looking for a deep dive into the history, this is definitely something you should take a look at. The book itself is well bound has great visuals and can easily be shared with others. I will say it is tough to read with kids in the house. The text is small and dense but so informative. It tell us the conflict over Palestine from only their point of view. I have been reading it in small chucks. I enjoy the pictures in the book. It really makes the story come to life. I received an incentive to write this review.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have to admit, I thought this book, the Hundred Years‘ War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi was newly published so I was surprised to realize that it was actually published 5 years ago. Obviously with that being said it doesn’t include any of the recent happenings over there. It ranges only from 1917-2017. But it includes so many events and details. I was surprised by the sheer amount of information that the author included in the book along with several pictures, some of which showed the devastation of war in great detail. I’ve included one of the photos in my review. It definitely makes a bigger impression seeing it versus just reading about it. Also the author included an extensive notes section that was very detailed and organized by section which was nice to refer back and forth between while reading. It was definitely interesting reading about a different perspective as I’ve only ever known the one side. The book itself was a good size and comfortable to hold while reading. I received an incentive to write this review.

This was written by an author whose family was involved in many of the events mentioned in this book. It is written from a Muslim perspective. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This book is most likely to be best appreciated by history buffs but I decided to give it a try as I enjoy reading non fiction. I appreciate that this book is written by someone who actually resided in Jerusalem and has familial and political connections. I enjoyed the visual representations included in this book. It is broken up into six sections of critically historical Palenstine moments and although it has 319 pages, approximately 50 of those pages consist of footnotes, acknowledgements and the index. The book has an index and a notes section as there are a lot of references throughout the book. It can be used as study material for someone interested in researching the war. The book is told from the perspective of a Palestinian but not in the sense of a victim. This is a really great read to gain understanding. I received an incentive to write this review.
