Brilliant....[a] deeply frightening deconstruction of the illusion of the self.--The New York Times

In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three.

A teenage girl who isn't allowed outside, not after last time.
A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory.
And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible.

An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

"The new face of literary dark fiction."--Sarah Pinborough

The Last House on Needless Street is hands down, my favorite book of 2021. It is a brilliant story that takes place in a different type of haunted house. The story follows Ted, his daughter Lauren, and their cat Olivia, as they live out their daily routines. Once their new neighbor starts coming around, their secrets start to unravel. Its plot is layered with hauntings, trauma, revenge, and, ultimately, hope. Catriona Ward has written Needless from the point of view of all three characters. In fact, POV plays an intricate part in how the story unfolds. Ward punctuates the different POV’s with tonal changes, especially from Olivia the cat’s. The changes in tone can be a little off putting, but stay with it. The setting is perfect: a rundown, boarded up house that is at the end of a secluded street, right next to an isolated woods. Ted and his family keep to themselves, so there is a sense of isolation and loneliness. Ward makes it impossible to not empathize with them. Little by little, Ward sprinkles in hints of the past which has a huge effect on Ted and his family. It ends up being rough terrain for the reader to navigate because of all the twists and turns, but Ward does a clever job at leading the reader through it all. About a third of the way through, it becomes impossible to put it down. Needless goes to some unpredictable places, which makes for a thrilling read. The Last House on Needless Street ends up being horrifying, beautiful, and heartbreaking. It is a must read.
