About the Book

After Pearl Harbor, sweethearts Gordon Hooper and Dorie Armitage were broken up by their convictions. As a conscientious objector, he went west to fight fires as a smokejumper, while she joined the Army Corps. When a tragic accident raises suspicions, they're forced to work together, but the truth they uncover may lead to an impossible--and dangerous--choice.

Book Synopsis

A WWII novel of courage and conviction, based on the true experience of the men who fought fires as conscientious objectors and the women who fought prejudice to serve in the Women's Army Corps.

Since the attack on Pearl Harbor, Gordon Hooper and his buddy Jack Armitage have stuck to their values as conscientious objectors. Much to their families' and country's chagrin, they volunteer as smokejumpers rather than enlisting, parachuting into and extinguishing raging wildfires in Oregon. But the number of winter blazes they're called to seems suspiciously high, and when an accident leaves Jack badly injured, Gordon realizes the facts don't add up.

A member of the Women's Army Corps, Dorie Armitage has long been ashamed of her brother's pacifism, but she's shocked by news of his accident. Determined to find out why he was harmed, she arrives at the national forest under the guise of conducting an army report . . . and finds herself forced to work with Gordon. He believes it's wrong to lie; she's willing to do whatever it takes for justice to be done. As they search for clues, Gordon and Dorie must wrestle with their convictions about war and peace and decide what to do with the troubling secrets they discover.

"In Green's gratifying sophomore novel, WWII serves as the backdrop to a tense investigation into forest fires. . . . Green creates an enthralling narrative that will keep readers guessing until the end. As new insights force Gordon and Dorie to grapple with their principles, one ideal emerges paramount: the truth actually can set one free. Green's fans will love this." --Publishers Weekly

Excellent WW2 Novel

5 out of 5 stars

The Lines Between Us is the second novel by Amy Lynn Green but reads as though she has been writing forever. You are immediately drawn into the story by the first few lines. While the second novel is not an epistolary story, there are still quite a few letters dispersed throughout the novel. I enjoyed how the story alternated between letters and real-time. It added a lot of depth to the story and helps you to connect with the characters on a deeper level. When a girl asks a fellow to write to her, is one day after leaving too soon? I bet it is. I am not sure what to think of Dorie, I liked her at first, and then she really made me mad! So, I guess she is a character that brings out strong emotions in you! While I warmed up to her the closer the story got to the end, she was never a character that I loved. I do have to admire how she held to her convictions and how her character does grow into a better version of herself. By which I mean...you should write again, soon and often. Start now, if you like. Jack and Gordon have a great friendship and I appreciate Jack's leadership in the story. While he is not quite as central, especially once he is injured, he is always there...if that makes sense. Gordon also holds strong convictions that are tested quite frequently in the novel. When he learns some new information about his family, will it shatter those convictions, or make them stronger? Our country is fighting for survival, and you wonder what Jesus would do? Of course he would want you to fight! Gordon is forced into a leadership position once Jack is injured and then forced to work with Dorie. While he may not always agree with Dorie's methods, he refuses to lie for her or let go of his convictions. This is a fabulous story with a lot of depth and layers. It is based on real events from WWII, where men fought fires as conscientious objectors and women entered into the women's army corps. The story comes alive through the letters, the friendships, the strong convictions, and the courage that each character displays. There are also several mysteries to be solved. While you think you know and will figure out the way the story ends, you won't. Trust me. The ending does not tie up everything in a nice neat bow, but it leaves room for plenty of thought and speculation. I loved Amy Green's first book so I pre-ordered this book immediately. I loved this book too but not with the emotion of the first book if that makes sense? Maybe loved it differently.

Unique and Creative Historical Fiction!

4 out of 5 stars
Rebecca Maney - 4 years ago
"We live in different worlds, Gordon. Mine is the real one, and yours is some idealistic fantasy where everyone loves their neighbor and no one has to fight for freedom. It took a declaration of war to wake us up to that, but I'd rather know now than keep pretending." Well, that was a blunt good-bye. Becoming a conscientious objector had cost Gordon Hopper the woman he imagined himself to fancy, and subsequently landed him in the middle of Oregon with Dorie's brother, his best friend Jack. . . . . fighting fires. Tragically there was one fire that Jack couldn't fight, and it left Gordon wondering if all of his convictions had just gone up in smoke. "What are you doing here, Dorie? ". . . . . . "What do you mean? You practically summoned me." Dorie Armitage wanted answers. As a member of the Women's Army Corps, she had a reputation for flying above and below the radar when it came to rules, but twisting her leave into a fictitious army investigation into a suspicious fire was over the top, even for her. And blast it! Gordon Hopper was still as straight laced as ever; would he even help her find the information she sought; they both sought? Highly doubtful. " . . . but maybe it takes courage to stand up to people making fun of you for what you believe, or to jump out of planes . . . . you were braver than I realized . . . " Written with remarkable creative flair, this story weaves an amazing amount of little known information about World War II's conscientious objectors, and some of the tasks assigned to them, into a very interesting narrative. The ending? Pleasantly satisfying in a round-about way, but still leaving a lot of room for thought. As every good story should. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.

Digging Out the Truth!

5 out of 5 stars

World War II changed lots of things, and that was especially true of the relationship between siblings Dorie and Jack. They were close all their lives, but when Jack decided to become a conscientious objector after the war broke out, Dorie couldn’t understand. Nor could she forgive his friend, Gordon, for influencing Jack to take that stand. But now Jack is dead, and despite being told nothing unusual took place, Dorie is determined to find out what really happened to him. Skirting the truth on many levels, Dorie arrives at the forest where Jack worked, disguised as a government worker. She is unhappy to find Gordon at the camp, and feels forced to ask him for help. Most of the time, Gordon is hostile towards her, but reluctantly, he gives her a small amount of assistance. As she digs into uncovering the truth about what happened to Jack, she finds lots of plausible possibilities. But when she gets to the true story, will she live long enough to tell it? Many exciting circumstances take place, plus there are some unexpected twists and turns, including some in Gordon’s history. What happened to Jack is both surprising, and actually based on true events of the time. Having a personal connection to the war through my parents, I enjoy stories set during that time period—having this one revolve around conscientious objectors, made this tale even more fresh and interesting. The puzzle of Jack's death, along with the real human conflicts, make this a story that will keep you riveted until you learn the outcome. I recommend this five-star book to fans of clean, exciting mysteries told from a faith viewpoint. Bethany House Publishers has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, The Lines Between Us, for the purpose of review.
