About the Book
"A story of summer, secrets, love and lies: in the course of a singular day on Cape Cod, one woman must make a life-changing decision that has been brewing for decades. Set against the summer backwoods and beaches of Cape Cod, The Paper Palace unfolds over 24 hours and across 50 years, as decades of family legacy, love, lies, secrets, and one unspeakable childhood tragedy lead wife and mother Elle Bishop to the precipice of a life-changing decision. With its transporting setting and propulsive pace, the story draws on the sweet promise of young love, as well as the heartbreaking damage incurred by too many secrets. It's a compulsively readable story about the tensions between the romantic childhood ideals we grow up with, and the family responsibilities that carry us into adulthood. Must our life choices remain irrevocable if the conditions are changed? It is a perfect July morning, and Elle, a fifty-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at "The Paper Palace"-- the family summer place which she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different, because last night Elle and her oldest friend Jonas crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, over the next 24 hours, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband, Peter, and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love, Jonas, if a tragic event hadn't forever changed the course of their lives. As Heller colors in the experiences that have led Elle to this day, we arrive at her ultimate decision with all its complexity. Tender yet devastating, The Paper Palace considers the tensions between desire and dignity; the legacies of abuse; and the crimes and misdemeanors of families"--Book Synopsis

Praise for The Paper Palace"The moody and atmospheric setting of the shadowy paths and ponds of the Back Woods is described in lush detail that makes a sharp contrast to the colder, sharper elements of Elle's story...From the first pages of her debut novel, Heller pulls no punches." - Kirkus Tightly woven and immediate, The Paper Palace takes us deep into a vivid summer landscape, a family, and a private, longstanding love story, and holds us there from start to finish. - Meg Wolitzer, New York Times bestselling author of The Interestings and The Female Persuasion "The Paper Palace turned out to be the very page-turner I needed. If you want to learn something about love over a long time--how it can hurt, how it can soar-- read this book." - Mary Beth Keane, New York Times bestselling author of Ask Again, Yes "Miranda Cowley Heller has written a magnificent page-turner, a love story that shimmers with desire, intelligence, and humor. Lush and gorgeously written, The Paper Palace is as intoxicating as a summer night by the sea. I didn't want it to end." - Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney, New York Times bestselling author of The Nest
"Set in the physical and psychic landscape of Cape Cod, The Paper Palace is a fever dream of a novel, luminous with love and shot through with humor and heartbreak. It is a book that explores the indelibility of childhood, what it means to be shaped by place, and all that is unpredictable about the human heart. I couldn't put it down. " - Adrienne Brodeur, author of Wild Game

Highly inaccurate to what is described as the synopsis of the book. The characters are flat & the ending was worthless. Extremely triggering for a SA survivor. They should have had warnings ahead of time. Very disappointing, would not recommend.

Got 40 pages in and had to give up. So boring. Heavily focused on old childhood memories from different generations and not many in the present.
Very graphic

Wonderful book. Very upsetting at times. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone going through grief recovery of any kind. Had to take breaks from it a few times. But still, a wonderful book.

This was the most boring book I’ve ever read my entire life, I didn’t care about one single character and the incessant time jumps had my head spinning.

Absolutely incredible — this book will stay with me for awhile. Great, dimensional characters, lyrical descriptions of the flora and fauna of Cape Code. Please research trigger warnings before diving in.
