Book Synopsis

A desperate man attempts to win a reality TV game where the only objective is to stay alive in this #1 national bestseller from Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman.

"Tomorrow at noon, the hunt begins. Remember his face!"

Ben Richards is a desperate man. With no job, no money, no way out, and a young daughter in need of proper medical attention, he must turn to the only possibility of striking it rich in this near-future dystopian America: participating in the ultraviolent TV programming of the government-sanctioned Games Network. Ben soon finds himself selected as a contestant on the biggest and the best that the Games Network has to offer: The Running Man, a no-holds-barred thirty-day struggle to stay alive as public enemy number one, relentlessly hunted by an elite strike force bent on killing him as quickly as possible in front of an audience all too eager to see that happen. It means a billion dollars in prize money if he can live for the next month. No one has ever survived longer than eight days. But desperation can push a person do things they never thought possible--and Ben Richards is willing to go the distance in this ultimate game of life and death....

"Under any name King mesmerizes the reader." --Chicago Sun-Times
"No one does psychological terror better!" --Kirkus Reviews
"One of America's top storytellers." --Toronto Star

Although I didn’t really like the ending, The Running Man deserves a decent rating. There were a few features that stuck out in this book and made the dystopian genre really pop out. Richards was always under surveillance of some sort, either by the people on the streets or by security cameras. If you're interested in suspense, this book is for you! Its built up for half of the book until the game starts. The author wrote this book in part about poverty and how when desperate enough, people will do anything for money. I believe people should read this book to discover the extremes of poverty and the lengths people will go for their family. When Richards is offered a position as the chief hunter, he accepts then betrays Killian because of what had happened to his family. “” I've decided to accept,” Richards said.” pg. 385 “He was coming at it, coming at the games building.” pg. 409. “His face smeared with blood, his black eyes burning like the eyes of a demon. Richards was grinning. And giving him the finger. “-Jesus-” was all Killian had time to get out.” He is destroying the games building to get revenge for the death of his family. The amount of detail given for what was happening also made the book very easy to visualize. So why is it important that people acknowledge this book? This book brings forth great ideas for people who represent those in poverty and try to get them help. This book is great for people who like helping their community by showing them what a community could become had there not been people there to help those who are in need. “This book is crazy enough to be interesting but close enough to reality to say something about modern society.” Mr. Waryas said about The Running Man. If you haven't already read it, The Running Man is a very strong selection for your next book.
