Favorite Middle Grade Book This Year

My 11-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son and I all love this magical and hilarious middle-grade novel about making friends and finding "home". It's our go-to birthday party gift now. Nestor's dad is deployed, and he's used to moving from base to base. Now he's acclimating to his new home at his abuela's. In this small town, he finds friends, family, and the adventure of a lifetime. Cuevas writes a novel perfect for everyone, but especially for readers (especially reluctant readers) who love humor, magic, adventure, and animals. It would also be a fantastic book for military families and families who are going through a move and adjusting to a new place.
My daughter stayed up all night to finish it and was only "a little" scared. That's high praise. It's suspenseful and funny in all the right ways. Enjoy!
A book for everyone's holiday list!

I received an advance copy of The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez and decided to start reading right after dinner. I thought it would be a book that I'd read over the next several days as I had a few, free moments. That is definitely not what happened! Trying not to spoil the book for anyone, I have to say that once danger loomed on the horizon for Nestor and his friends I simply could not stop reading. The Total Eclipse of Nestor Lopez is a book written for middle grade students and, true to it's intentions, it will keep them glued to the pages until the last touching moment. However, the character and plot development are sophisticated enough to keep readers of all ages engaged and wanting more! I hope this is just the first book in the adventures of a warm hearted and courageous boy named Nestor.
Great contemporary fantasy!
