This southern girl has seen and heard some feisty mamaws in her day, so Minerva Jenkins was an expected and perfect mix of cranky and cantankerous, while still keeping things close to the vest. She had lived alone on the mountain for years until Del Rankin came calling. As he stuck around for a time, Minerva began to realize that having relationships with others, as well as with God, was what made life worthwhile and that secrets, and promises to keep them, were way more trouble than their worth. I really loved this story but, for me, there is repetitive dialogue that offered little to no new information to move the story along. Some of this was the character working through hurt and betrayal while some of it was restatement. Beyond that, I really enjoyed the story. Barbara McCulloh is a favorite when it comes to the narration of southern stories. She gets it right, performs male voices well and, in this story, portrays Minerva with exceptional talent. This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language.

I was a bit hesitant to start this book. I was in the midst of some overwhelming things and I didn't think that I wanted a book that appeared to be a bit on the somber side. Thankfully I was completely wrong about the tone of the book. Minerva Jane Jenkins is a 94 year old woman with one foot in the grave. But that other foot of hers is still walking down life's path. A bit slower than earlier years, but she's still movin'. I completely fell in love with Minerva. In my head she has my grandma's voice which made the story even better. Minerva is feisty and puts up with very little. She's spent the last 30 plus years as a widow and has done a pretty good job of keeping the farm going. When Del Rankin shows up asking questions about the past, Minerva's isolated world is upended. The story is about a woman at the end of her life so death is a topic. But it is definitely in context to a life well lived. We are privy to her regrets and long lost dreams. There's also the mystery of the box of gold that has been the source of so much loss. All of these things put together made for a deeply moving story. I would classify this as one of my top ten reads of the year. Cindy Sproles is a new author to me but you can bet that I will be on the lookout for more from her.

DEEPLY TOUCHING AND EMOTIONAL STORY

How long would you keep a secret you promised to keep? Minerva Jane Jenkins had kept one for 30 years. She vowed as she held her dying husband in her arms, never to reveal what was in the box he had so carefully guarded all his life. She had no clue what was in the box, but she kept her word. It is 1902; Minerva is now 94 years old and knows she is nearing the end of her time here on earth. She has lived a lonely life of survival in the Appalachian Mountains. All she has known his heartache and hardship yet it has not dulled her wit and determination to carry on. Her constant prayer is that the Lord will not let her die alone. Del Rankin a reporter hears of her husband, Stately’s, story and want’s to find the truth. He is a kind, caring young man and likes Minerva’s spunkiness and amazing spirit of independence when clearly even the smallest things are difficult in her advanced age. Minerva is suspicious of him of course but his honestly and persistence to help her wins her over. For the first time in a long time she trusts someone. Little did she realize even at 94 he would change her life in ways she never imagined. As with all of Cindy Sproles’ books they touch you very deeply emotionally. I felt every one of Minerva’s aches and pains, her physical challenges to accomplish daily tasks, and her feelings. The author’s detail to Minerva’s emotions and perceptions were so in-depth that she became alive to me. I loved her sense of humor, how she talked so easily with the Lord, and the wisdom she shares throughout the story. There are many unexpected surprises and turns along the way. Be prepared and have a box of tissues on hand, you will not read this book without some tears. This is a deep book on many levels and beautifully written. I always look forward to reading more books by Cindy Sproles. I received this book from Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own.

As Stately Jenkins is taking his last breath, he pleads with his wife, Minerva to keep a secret. At the time she has no idea what the secret is but believes the details are in “the box.” Thirty years later a reporter shows up on her doorstep to explore the story of hidden gold. This story details the friendship between this reporter, who is searching for more than a story about gold, and Minerva, a ninety-four-year-old who is at the end of her life. Minerva is a woman who has lived much of her life alone, so when Del Rankin appears she is suspicious and has no interest in talking to him. But Del wins her over with his kind and caring personality. The author did a really nice job of depicting the very different personalities between Dell and Minerva and their tug of war relationship. They develop a comradery with a common goal. The author’s style of writing was easy to read, and she developed the main characters well. I especially liked her descriptions of the characters emotions. There were moments in the narrative that were slow and a little repetitive. In my opinion, it took a long time to reveal the secret and it was a bit anticlimactic. The strength of the story is in the reflections Minerva has about her life and her relationship with Del.

I have conflicting thoughts about This Is Where It Ends. I adored the plot and enjoyed the suspense of what could possibly be in the box. I could not love Minerva any more than I did. Her and her friendship with Del was so pure and beautiful. I would love to give their story five stars. However, there were a few areas that made no sense to me historically wise. There were several times when dates were given that really did not add up, as well as, discussions of some events that were not historically accurate or correct. I found this distracting to me as I continued to read. As a lifelong Appalachian mountain girl myself and one who loves genealogy, I just could be a little too picky. Overall, I believe the author wrote a beautiful and touching story of faith, forgiveness, loyalty and friendship. I am giving This Is Where It Ends three and a half stars. I believe it is worth a read for readers who enjoy clean historical fiction with a touch of suspense and mystery. I received a paperback copy of Cindy K Sproles' This Is Where It Ends from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

This Is Where It Ends is an amazing book that kept me turning the pages. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next but also hated to reach the end! Author Cindy K. Sproles offers a realistic look at the Appalachian culture that would have been prevalent in the late 19th / early 20th century by sharing a poignant tale of a childless woman who'd been alone, atop her Kentucky mountain, for 30 years. Minerva Jenkins had been a wife but it wasn't until her 94th year of life that she finally experienced true love. A young reporter from Lexington, Kentucky arrives at Shoal Mountain searching for facts about a box of gold and instead, finds a treasure beyond compare. He discovers feisty Minerva, and together, they build a powerful bond of the sweetest kind: the love that a grandmother and grandson might share! Minerva is such a multi-faceted character! Spunky, independent, and contrary, but still the young girl who longed to be first in her husband's heart. Is it any wonder that she grew to be a tad bitter after Stately Jenkins asked her to keep a secret that was "never hers to hold"? This Is Where It Ends is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, and I'm so happy that I met Minerva. There are several other characters who make this tale shine, including thoughtful and kind Del Rankin, compassionate Pastor Blessing, and Minerva's furry friend, Satchel! I can't say enough good things about this book and I highly recommend it to all who enjoy character-driven stories. It will surely be one of my top 10 books of the year! I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.

An Inspiring Appalachian read

This is Where it Ends by Cindy K. Sproles Topic or themes I saw: Receiving genuine love, the value of elderly. Rejection, unworthiness, sadness over a life you wished had been lived differently. Setting our eyes on eternal things, not temporal. The beauty of relationships. Read it if you love: ✔️Immersive Appalachian reads ✔️Strong faith themes ✔️Lonely to loved stories ✔️Historical fiction with more focus on the story than history Story: Wow, this novel had an incredibly satisfying ending! What do you do when you get to the end of your life and realize the life you were living was a lie? You believed what you wanted to believe, not what was true. And you wish you would have done things different? That you thought you were loved, but really weren’t? It’s never too late. And life is more than perfection and always making the right decision. It’s more than wallowing in our mistakes. And it’s more than shoving aside the painful parts of life—the things we wished were different. It’s acknowledging our disappointments while grabbing ahold the beauty we have. It’s in forgiveness and love. It’s clinging to the promise that God’s love holds us secure. This novel portrayed all these things in a heart-hugging kind of way. The plot was slower moving, but love for the characters and the desire to learn the truth about the box will keep readers turning pages! Main takeaway: True love holds us secure. Here are a few ‘gold nugget’ quotes I loved: “I imagine the heart hides the truth when it sees pain.” “Few care about the person, just the secrets against them.” “The Lord didn’t give me everything I wanted, but He’d provided what was best.” “The sign of love is the one who carries you through.” “Her life was not always internally peaceful, but she never veered from the life that would come.” Thank you Revell for a gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

This is Where It Ends by Cindy K. Sproles tells the story of Minerva, who at the age of 14 was married, and her husband, Stately. He moved her to the mountains. She lived on the mountain for 50 years with her husband. At the age of 94, 30 years after continuing to mourn his death, a reporter, Del, shows up at her home. Suddenly, Del is caring for Minerva and helping her. However, Minerva is trying to figure out what Del’s motives are. Does it relate to the box that Minerva’s late husband had given her upon his death? The one he told her to keep as a secret, and not share under any circumstances. What is in the box? Is it gold as many believe? Is it something else? Was Stately, ever truly in love with her? Was there another woman? What are Del’s ultimate motives? What does he know? This story tells the fascinating tale of life many years ago. I’ll admit the story did take a little while to pickup, however I was fascinated and intrigued to find out exactly what was happening. About halfway through I could not put it down and to tried to solve the mystery of what was in the box. This is a fantastic historical fiction book that I would recommend.

Wow! Rarely does a book touch me as much as this one did. I was transported to the beauty of Kentucky- the imagery in this book brought the mountain to life! Minerva- what a character! She is the epitome of strength and resilience. Her faith in God is commendable! " She taught me love through love and example. She proved the value in forgiveness, the strength of your word, and the gold of family." Del- what a guy! Compassionate, caring, and kind. He loves with his whole being. This author is new to me, but she has become one of my new favorite authors! I was provided a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This Is Where It Ends is an exceptionally amazing book. Told through the eyes of our main character Minerva Jane Jenkins at 94 years of age. Living in the hills of Appalachia Kentucky she married a man at 14 years old, he was only 17. Married for about fifty years as her husband lays dying, he makes her promise to keep his secret and also never share with anyone the contents of a box he carries around with him, she does. In my opinion Minverva doesn't get a fair shake in life, high up on a hill she is lonely for friends and neighbors and her marriage isn't how she would have planned it to be. She lives a simple life living off the fruits of the land. She is a simple woman and knew this going in she just never expected her life to be quite like this. So lonely after her husband dies. she manages with the occasional visit from a neighbor when they bring some type of food, she's unable to grow. There's been a rumor that her husband years ago had gold hidden away on their homestead but looking at her little run down falling apart cabin it would make you wonder, When a reporter gets word of this gold he goes to visit and she thinks he's there because of the rumor of the gold. She's hesitant to trust him, as most hill people are apt not to trust outsiders. The more they talk and get to know each other the more she lets her guard down and begins to trust him. She's been so lonely is this God's way of bringing help and a friend into her life? Days turn into weeks that turn into months as he stays and helps her with repairs that have needed done for years. It really warmed my heart to see such a bond forming between the two characters. I really felt authenticity with the dialect, setting, foods and descriptions of the character's actions. I really felt as though I have gotten to know Minerva through this book. She was a unique and quite special person. This book is a real treasure. Get to know the elderly and form a bond with them. This book will stay with me for quite some time! Pub Date 27 Jun 2023 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

“How long does a body keep a promise?” This Is Where It Ends by Cindy K. Sproles follows the journey of Minerva, an elderly woman with gumption, to find the answer to that question. Minerva knows her time on earth is short but she wants some answers. Her only request of God is don’t let her die alone. God answers her request in an unexpected way that takes her and the reader down a winding road of memories with some twists and turns just like the beautiful but rugged terrain of the Appalachian Mountains of the early 1900’s. The description makes you feel like you were walking alongside the river with Minerva Jane, and the characterization makes you wish you could meet her in person. This is a book worth savoring. [Note: I received an advanced reader copy by the publisher, but I was not required to leave a review.]

I selected this book by an author that was unknown to me because of its setting in the mountains of Kentucky in the early 1900s. I am glad I took the risk, and will be on the lookout for other books by Cindy K. Sproles. This Is Where It Ends is a multi-themed story which deals with the importance of considering well before making a promise, the importance of connecting with others in one's community, and the value of the elderly. These themes spring from a delightful story that is filled with both chuckles and tears. Sproles does a marvelous job with character development, truly capturing the mountain spirit in Minerva Jane Jenkins, and the gentle spirits of Delano Rankin. The story left me reminded of and marveling in God's perfect timing in our lives, even the times when it feels like just the opposite. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of This Is Where It Ends from Revell via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Talented storyteller Cindy Sproles excels in telling an Appalachian tale with fervor and authenticity. Set in Kentucky in the early 1900s, the character driven plot of This Is Where It Ends drew me in quickly and kept me reading with anticipation. The first person narrative is very fitting for Minerva’s story as it allows for deeper insight into her thoughts and feelings and helps develop an emotional connection with her which is very important in this type of story. I enjoyed the local dialect and vivid descriptions that add flavor to the mountain setting. I especially enjoyed the descriptions regarding kudzu which I know, from first-hand experience, are spot-on! I love Minerva and her strong, faithful spirit reminiscent of a special mountain lady from my childhood. Del also stole my heart with the patience and sweet love he showed for Minerva. I greatly appreciate how the story conveys the spiritual truths of forgiveness and living life looking “beyond what is temporal to what is eternal.” This book touched my heart, and I highly recommend it. I received this book as an ARC with no expectation of a positive review. This story is about a Minerva Jane Jenkins. Minerva married Stately Jenkins when she was fourteen years old. Right after they were married, he moved her from her home in Lexington, KY to the mountains away from her family and her friends. After Stately died, Minerva lived on the mountain alone for forty years. During that time, she is plagued with questions about her life with Stately and a box of gold that belonged to Stately. He made her promise as he was dying that she would keep his secret. One day, Del Rankin shows up at her home. He came asking questions. This is a story of discovery. What is a secret worth? How long do you keep a secret? Is a person's word what makes a person's character. I really enjoyed this story. This is the first book of Ms. Sproles that I have read. I am sure it will not be my last.

“How long does a body keep a promise?” Minerva asks in Cindy K. Sproles novel, This Is Where It Ends. ~ What ~ This two-hundred-and-eighty-eight-page paperback targets those interested in historical fiction about dealing with the past and growing old in the Appalachian Mountains. With only one slang word of heck, the topics of illness, physical abuse, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. As an advanced reader copy, the ending so far includes an excerpt from another book and the author’s biography. In this tale set in the late eighteen-hundreds, ninety-four-year-old Minerva has dutifully accepted her widowed life living the last forty years alone on Shoal Mountain in Kentucky. She always tried to do her best as a faithful, loving wife, even keeping a promise to her departed husband about a secret he asked her to keep. But when a young man comes on her land and creeps into her heart, will she stay true to her beliefs no matter what the cost? ~ Why ~ This story written mainly in first-person grasps the reader as they learn how secret sins can build up over the years, allowing bitterness, regret, and guilt to take over. Minerva’s quirky yet strong-willed personality is wonderfully written while Del shines in his gentleness and thoughtfulness. The raw emotions of aging and dying are touching yet heartbreaking. I love the correlation of kudza vines being like hatred and anger over-taking one’s life. The descriptions of living off the land and the beauty of being self-supportive while cautious in trusting others were savored. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not like books about rejection and acceptance when dealing with life and death may not care for this emotional story. Others may feel it bogged down with sadness and personal turmoil, yet it does have redeeming qualities of mercy, love, and grace. ~ Wish ~ With this being an advanced reader copy, I hope a few discussion questions can be added without giving away too much of the story. Since it does mention God and prayers to Him, I wish it contained the eternal plan of salvation. ~ Want ~ If you like a tender read of a broken elderly woman trying to be a promise keeper, this one may have you shedding tears dealing with its ending. Thanks to Revell and Interviews & Reviews for this complimentary book. I am under no obligation to give a positive review.

Minerva Jane Jenkins has spent her entire married life in the mountains of Kentucky, surviving but not thriving. Her husband Stately made her promise him to keep a secret and in keeping that secret, she has isolated herself from the rest of the world. Then a young reporter named Del Rankin comes along and turns her safe shelter upside down with his revelations about the past and his hope for her future. This is a book that left me emotionally drained as I identified with poor Minerva and her profound faith and determination to keep a promise no matter the cost to herself. The characters are fascinating and richly developed, with authentic dialogue from Appalachia and authentic details about survival there. This is a well-crafted story with multiple layers and a thought-provoking look at accepting and forgiving others. I really enjoyed the southern flavor of this tale and the down-home goodness of Minerva even when she was sorely wronged. As she is approaching what she knows will be the end of her days, she continues to keep her promise to her husband but she also finds a love that she never realized she had missed so much. The story is captivating, original and gut-wrenching at times as Minerva faces the truth of her past and grasps a future that is all too short because of her advanced age. I enjoyed the feel of community when the people rallied around her and I really liked the character of Del and what a dynamic person he was. He came for one purpose and stayed for another higher one, making him remarkable and believably lovable. I also liked the homestead itself that became like a character on its own, with its broken doors and kudzu vines that took over part of Minerva’s land. Finally, I liked getting to know the heart of Minerva and what made her keep a promise for so many years, how much she loved her dog Satchel and how much love she had to give to others. This story of redemption and hope is filled with inspiration and is an eye-opening look at how the elderly should be revered and cared for. A story that will pull you in and not leave until the end. Prayers to not die alone, are answered here, but is the person here for Minerva, or for what wealth he is hoping to find? Well more than one person shows up on the old mountain looking for Minerva Jenkins, and they are looking for the gold, but one look at the place that this 94 year old woman lives in, and they should know there isn't any gold, but sometimes gold isn't what we think! A woman who has lived her life playing second fiddle, but as we page turner we learn more and more. I felt sad for Minerva, such a young age to marry, 14, and never see her folks again. There is drama, and there is feisty Minerva, and she sure tells it like it is. Enter Del, she tells him to get lost and not return! He does of course! What a wonderful job the author does bringing this story alive, we get to know Minerva, and how she guards secrets, and in the end I was glad she did. This is a read that shows how prayers are answered, not always as we want, but how they should be! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.
