Book Synopsis

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

PAIDÓS PRIZE 2025

Acclaimed Argentine author Tamara Tenenbaum presents a brilliant essay that explores new ways of living in the 21st century while emphasizing the importance of beauty and work as forces that foster equality and freedom.

In mid-2022, Tenenbaum was commissioned to translate A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. Using the questions that arose from that project as a starting point, she offers a reinterpretation of Woolf's book to examine the current situation of women (though not only them), addressing topics that interest her: job insecurity, love fading in the Tinder era, food, money, resentment as a political response, nostalgia, and the power of tradition.

With lucid and fluid prose, this text--rich in literary, philosophical, and pop culture references--engages in a dialogue with Virginia Woolf's classic. Tenenbaum delivers an essay that goes beyond a manifesto, striving to be "a plebeian and feminist counterworld proposal based on the importance of beauty and work as... producers of equality and freedom."

For Tenenbaum, who is keen on writing about her time, A Room of One's Own serves as both inspiration and oracle, giving her the chance to envision alternative ways of living in the 21st century--ones that resist the surrounding neoconservative discourse while being both modern and postmodern. Most importantly, they help navigate uncertainty without falling into naïve optimism or reactionary pessimism.

In her own words: "I am approaching A Room of One's Own to do what Virginia said we do with Greek classics: to seek, rather than what Virginia had, what we are missing."

"The book's strength lies in its ability to open horizons. It does not seek to provide definitive answers but rather to pose relevant and timely questions, making it an essential work for better understanding the world we live in." -- Gonzalo Celorio, member of the Paidós Prize jury
