Description

About the Book

In a tech-saturated world, a return to outdoor play is exactly what our children need. Founder of 1000 Hours Outside shows parents how to help their kids discover the fun--not to mention the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual benefits--that awaits them beyond the four walls of their home.

Book Synopsis

Help your kids to grow up curious, resilient, and with a sense of adventure and community by making outside play a priority. This book shows you how.

The average American now spends just four to seven minutes outside each day, while we spend four to seven hours using devices with screens. Our physical, mental, emotional, and relational health has suffered--and so has that of our children.

But there is a solution: get outside!

A homeschooling mother of five and the founder of the global 1000 Hours Outside movement, Ginny Yurich explains how we got to this point--and how to get back to a healthier, more engaging relationship with the world outside.

With a mom's heart and an educator's eye, Ginny shows you
● the importance of unstructured play for children
● what boredom actually contributes to our brains
● the value of sunlight and social play
● the role of play in lifelong learning
● how to make time outside more attractive than screen time to your child

From the Back Cover

"Until the Streetlights Come On takes us back to the cul-de-sacs and customs of our youth when play was more than just a pastime, it was a rite of passage. Rousing and replete with research, this book is a primer for preserving play and giving childhood back to its rightful owners--our kids."--Ainsley Arment, founder of Wild + Free

Inspiring Parents to Preserve Childhood

4 out of 5 stars
Thumbs up graphic, would recommend
Robin Gold - 1 year ago
Written by the 1000 Hours Outside author Ginny Yurich, Until the Streetlights Come On continues to inspire parents in their quest for getting kids outdoors. This title is filled with practical tips as well as some of Ginny's own personal stories about getting outside. Yurich shares not only the how, but also the why's of this movement, pointing how important nature therapy is for all of us. So many take-aways built into this book, including a reminder that being outdoors builds leadership, cooperation, resilience, and so much more. I came away from this title refreshed and reinspired to not only get my kids outdoors, but to join them as well. This book would be a great read for new parents, old parents, homeschool parents, public school parents... really anyone wanting to preserve childhood and create margin in their family life. *Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
