Book Synopsis

A spiderweb of dangerous relationships lies at the heart of this daring Kinsey Millhone mystery from #1 New York Times bestselling author Sue Grafton.

Private detective Kinsey Millhone feels a bit out of place in any department store's lingerie section, but she's entirely in her element when she puts a stop to a brazen shoplifting spree. For her trouble she nearly gets run over in the parking lot by one of the fleeing thieves--and later learns that the one who didn't get away has been found dead in an apparent suicide. But Audrey Vance's grieving fiance suspects murder and hires Kinsey to investigate a case that will reveal a big story behind a small crime and lead her into a web that connects a shadowy "private banker," an angry trophy wife, a spoiled kid with a spiraling addiction, and a brutal killer without a conscience...

Review Quotes

Praise for V is for Vengeance

"Sure to satisfy."--USA Today

"Central to the books' appeal is not the hoodlums and their crimes--which are often fueled by alcohol or stupidity rather than the epic, high-stakes evil driving other crime books--but rather Kinsey herself...She is witty and weary and a lot of fun."--Los Angeles Times

"Grafton exhibits the pace, form, and technique of a marathon champ in her latest."--The Kansas City Star

"The author has hit a high mark with her latest offering, a complex tale of love, betrayal, ambition, and, of course, murder...The only bad thing: There are just four letters left in the alphabet."--Associated Press

More Praise for Sue Grafton and the Alphabet Series

"I'm going to miss Kinsey Millhone. Ever since the first of Sue Grafton's Alphabet mysteries, A Is For Alibi, came out in 1982, Kinsey has been a good friend and the very model of an independent woman, a gutsy Californian P.I. rocking a traditional man's job...it's Kinsey herself who keeps this series so warm and welcoming. She's smart, she's resourceful, and she's tough enough to be sensitive on the right occasions."--New York Times Book Review

"The consistent quality and skillful innovations in this alphabet series justify all the praise these books have received over the past 35 years."--Wall Street Journal

"A superb storyteller."--Publishers Weekly

"Grafton's endless resourcefulness in varying her pitches in this landmark series, graced by her trademark self-deprecating humor, is one of the seven wonders of the genre."--Kirkus Reviews

"Grafton is a writer of many strengths--crisp characterizations, deft plotting, and eloquent dialogue among them--and she has kept her long-running alphabet mystery series fresh and each new release more welcome than the last."--Louisville Courier-Journal

"[Grafton's] ability to give equal weight to the story of the detective and the detective story sets her apart in the world of crime fiction."--Richmond Times-Dispatch

Kinsey Millhone is in the right place and the right time to foil a shoplifter. She is surprised to find that the shoplifter kills herself the next day. But the surprises keep coming when the dead woman’s fiancé hired Kinsey to prove that the woman didn’t kill herself. The fiancé doesn’t think she was a shoplifter either, so he and Kinsey have a contentious relationship from the very start. But can Kinsey figure out what really happened? This book started out mostly well. There’s a subplot told in third person point of view chapters that really slowed the book down, but the chapters from Kinsey’s point of view were engaging. The further I got into the book, the harder time I had putting it down. Then we came to the climax, which turned out to be pretty weak, with one development I really didn’t like. It’s a shame because I enjoyed spending time with Kinsey and the rest of the regulars as always. This one is for series fans only.
