[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Waterway 5 HP Executive Two Speed Spa Pump. Part# 3722021-1D.
It is quite brazen of the manufacturer to claim this pump is 5 HP when the motor is barely 3 HP. If you intend to purchase one find a reseller who will replace the 5 HP impeller with a 3 HP. Read on...
I've had the same spa for over 16 years and have done all the maintenance and repairs myself. I have extensive background in electrical service, design and manufacturing.
The first replacement pump for the spa lasted about 3 years. That was when they used Century/AO Smith motors. Not a great life span. Now they use US Motors brand motors and the first one I bought lasted only one year. Completely unacceptable! I replaced the 5 HP impeller with a 4 HP impeller which reduces motor load as well as water pressure and flow in the last one I purchased and it lasted about as long as my first replacement.
This time I decided to do some research. SpaCare shows this pump as "5.0 HP 230 Volts 16.4/4.8 Amps" where the amp rating is for high/low speed so at high speed the motor should draw 16.4 amps and produce 5HP which does not add up. The motor nameplate shows THP (Total Horsepower) of 4.0 for high speed; not 5 HP as claimed. THP equals HP multiplied by the Service Factor (SF) of the motor but SF is not listed. THP = HP for an SF of 1.0. In the attached table you can see that a 5HP motor with an SF of 1.0 at 230 volts is 28 amps, not 16.4 amps. See also that a 3 HP motor draws 17 amps at 230 volts, so this motor is effectively less than 3 HP NOT 5. The pump motor is heavily overloaded and will not survive very long. Waterway owes me a 3 HP impeller. Part # 310-4200.
