So Far So Good

I have had a ton of WD drives on both Windows and Mac machines, and, for the most part, they have been great. Too early to tell how this WD 18TB My Book will fair. Recently, I had a 10TB drive fail in a MyBook Duo. Did not last near as long as previous drives. Did not replace the drive. Bought an enclosure for the 2nd drive and using it as a single now. Using the MyBook Duo enclosure as a way to route USB cables. :)

Great hardware, poor software

As usual with WD drives, the hardware is solid. I just hate the archaic lock software on PC. You have no easy way to toggle different computers to auto unlock without password. It's been YEARS and still doesn't work right. You have to remove the password and can only autounlock 1 computer, usually. It should be a simple toggle after typing in the password, and then possible ask for the password again or some second measure per computer. The software needs to be updated. I NEVER buy a WD drive without hardware encryption, but the software behind it lacks, always. WD, HIRE some good people to refresh this and make more options and make it user friendly.

Tons of Capacity and Speed!

Super Quick! Our biggest Bottleneck was older HDDs thats couldn't handle the throughput. It's a perfect Archive drive or daily backups. We reformatted it though before use which over a day, which is no big deal, but it gave us an extra 800GB of storage which was a major plus for us. But if you are not familiar with formatting don't go doing that. Anyways 10/10 I will get again for more archive files.

Easy to use. Attached to PC running Windows 10 and was quickly detected and added to file system. Been adding 1800+ DVD/Blu-Ray movie collection to the drive and data transfer speed has been quite good. Have only had for a couple of weeks so can't say much about the longevity of the unit. Only time will tell ;-).

Fast and reliable so far, but loud! The initial spin up sounds like a woodpecker is rattling my desk! Bought three of these and all of them are the same, loud aggressive noise.

Hello, We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD My Book Desktop Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review. Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience. "Setting up and using WD Security and WD Drive Utilities": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13880 "Western Digital Hard Drive Noise" https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/32906/kw/noise If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary. "How to get an RMA to replace a defective product, or obtain a power supply or USB cable for a WD product": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10336 All our products must pass our stringent quality standards before leaving our factory to be free from defects in materials and craftsmanship. exFAT affects booting on some system; loud

After I plugged this into my target system (Windows 10), the system simply cannot boot up. If I unplugged it during booting and then plug it in afterward, then it works fine. This also boots OK in another system that I tried. Checking the various forum, some suggest to change it from exFAT to NTSC. Once I did that, then it boots fine. It is still a mystery what that disk format make. Anyway, back to the disk, it is certainly loud on booting and disk access. You can hear the clicking even if you are 10 ft away and it is much louder than the 10TB Element that it replaced. Since this is a drive for backup (meaning it is not accessed unless I run the backup software), I can tolerate it. I also put a piece of foam padding underneath to dampen the noise.

Why i purchased 2- 18 TB WD My Book Ext. drives

If you are going to use this device with a Mac, you (may) need to contact WD technical support to guide you through reformatting prior to use. The reformatting process is logical, but can not be installed using the internal Mac disc utilities, you will need to install WD's download and use tech support to help make this a quick and easy process. This device, ( of which i purchased two) an 18TB My Book, will be used here as back up to my 48TB G Raid 4 bay Shuttle. I do not use the cloud for storage and would prefer to house my own back up. My digital life began with an ever increasing number of By Book's in the 1990's, and then migrated everything to G Drive storage. What I have done now, in this purchase is consolidate 12 G drives into, 1 48 TB G 4bay shuttle and 2- 18 TB My Book drives to bring of my storage needs up to date, with space available for adding data for a few years to come. This series of recent purchases represents my continued loyalty and trust in the performance reliability of products from WD for well over two decades.

Good Drive, Just Noisy

Extremely underwhelming...

I cannot fathom why anyone would make a USB 3.0 device, then cram a junk 5400rpm drive in it...but here it is. This thing is SO slow. I bought the 18TB model, and actually filled it almost completely up with backup data....only took several days to do so, which is not acceptable for me. This drive is also extremely noisy, and sounds like it is grinding, so it will be for backup only, and not ever hold any critical information. I only bought this drive because it was inexpensive, but I should have known better, so that's on me. On another note, this thing is not compatible with Roku, which only decreases its usefulness that much more. Also runs considerably warmer than my other drives from another vendor...

Got 3 18TB mybooks for a crazy low price each from the wd store (dunno how I got that price, maybe the store was screwed up that day but I jumped). They are simple to plug in, fast, and you can disable sleep mode. The only thing about the 18TB versions are they are LOUD. They do click/make a noise every 5 seconds (one is a click when the drive does it's 5 second access because something in the case is lose and you can tell it's the top plastic piece making the click). All of the mybooks are designed to make a noise every 5 seconds to "lubricate" stuff according to the faq here. The extra warranty making them have a 4 year warranty was even better. OH and these are 7200RPM drives in the case, probably white label red's. I also have 4 14's and one of those is 7200 (the rest are 5400) so i would guess it's a crap shoot what they decide to slap in there but my 18's are 7200 and fast over usb 3.1. If I see the low offer show up again I'm going to get one more and max out my drive letters. I find these more reliable than the brand that starts with see and ends with gate (the warranty on those is a year and they stuff in enterprise class drives where if you bought them bare you get a 3 year warranty and they wont honor the drive S/N, just the chassis SN). I don't know how WD handles shucked drives (none of mine are shucked) but I read that they dont complain and replace them. I'll stick with WD, never had much trouble with them. Again, they're fast, long warranty and the only complaint is they're noisy but what can you do. You can't go wrong with the brand, quality or price.

Perfect for Backups

5 out of 5 stars

My current drive I was using for backups, the WD 14 TB drive, was running out of space. So, I wanted an additional 18TB drive for backups. Works perfectly for what I need. Using it in a studio, I wouldn't have picked this drive if I needed to use it daily for my work. (I currently use 10 external drives) I am not really sure of its speed. It is strange that WD does not advertise the speed of the drive and data flow. They leave it out of their specs. I assume they do that purposely. I also could not find the specs anywhere on the internet. Anyway, for my purpose (backups), it is perfect. Also, pricing it along side other competitor drives, it was significantly cheaper, at least 30% cheaper. For the price point, I couldn't pass is up.

WD 18TB My Book Desktop - Very Noisy

Have had good experiences with WD products in the past. This one is very noisy and constantly making a clicking noise which is very distracting. Not sure if this is normal. I'm concerned that the unit is not functioning properly and will eventually fail when it is out of warranty. Somewhat disappointed with this purchase.
1 reply from SM OLS Team team - 4 years ago
Hi VJF0, We are sorry to hear that the WD My Book Desktop External Hard Drive is not working as expected and thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. Please know that the external drive makes noise during normal drive operation. The type and volume of noise are dependent on whether the is drive performing a read/write operation or idle with the heads parked. The environment where the drive is functioning may also influence noise. It is important to recognize which noises indicate trouble or normal drive operation. If the drive is not getting an uninterrupted power supply from the adapter then it could cause the drive to make noise. Please refer to the WD support page to know more.
