"When we leave the Brennans, they are perhaps more flawed than they were at the start. But that, to my mind, is what makes them feel human, and what makes the book feel real......[A] confident, polished debut novel..."
--The New York Times
--People "Lange skillfully contrasts the solace of family ties with the paralyzing burden of carrying secrets for too long. Her flawed but big-hearted Brennans will sneak under your skin."
--Star Tribune "In the vein of Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney's The Nest, We Are the Brennans explores the redemptive power of love in an Irish Catholic family torn apart by secrets."
--PUREWOW "Lange's richly layered debut...deftly examines the long shadow of family history and the bonds that cannot be broken"
--BOOKLIST "In Lange's accomplished debut... she keeps all of the Brennans sizzling with humanity while they grapple with familial loyalty. Fans of intense family dramas are in for a treat."
--Publishers Weekly "Reading this novel is like getting a view through a lighted window on a family sitting around a table after dark. Who are they? What are they talking about? All families have their own story and the ways they tell it to themselves, and untangling the many strands of this one was deep and richly satisfying. Once I started, I couldn't stop. I read it in one long delicious slide."
--Sarah Blake, New York Times bestselling author of The Guest Book "In We Are the Brennans, Tracey Lange expertly captures the way one harrowing night can forever change a family. The Brennans are a tight-knit Irish family, carrying enough secrets to topple most families. Instead, Lange offers them a chance to heal, reminding us that it's never too late to mend old wounds and that the things that tear us apart can ultimately put us back together. I devoured every page of this confident, accomplished debut."

Not your typical family drama

We Are the Brennans follows twenty-nine year old Sunday Brennan who's part of an Irish family and opens with quite an abrupt start. She wakes up in a Los Angeles Hospital after a drunk driving incident that forces her to go back home to her ... strained family. Throughout the course of the book, we meet the Brennan family in New York and we get to unravel the complex relationship that Sunday has with them (and with herself). Being the only girl in a family of five brothers is certainly something and Sunday has to deal with all that unresolved baggage when she finally goes home. I love love love dysfunctional family dramas. Not only are they entertaining and complex, but you get to see the same events unfold from so many different perspectives. More than that however, they feel very real and raw in that they often seem quite relatable. And that is definitely the case here.
Pretty Good!

We are the Brennans by Tracey Lange is a family drama set around a young woman named Sunday Brennan putting her life back together after a drunk driving accident in Los Angeles. She ends up moving back home with her family in New York after leaving them without any explanation. The story follows her as she attempts to put her life back together while staying in New York. This is hard for her after having to deal with the pain that she left behind her when she left before. This is a nice family drama that feels comfortable, but not entirely new. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say that it is the best family drama that I've read. The publisher/blurb compared it to The Nest and Ask Again Yes, but I don't think it is as amazing as those two amazing books. Also have to say that the cover is so boring on this one. Looks way to simple and just isn't impressive at all.
Well-crafted emotional family drama

Sunday is the only daughter in a big, close knit, Irish American family living near NYC. Five years ago, she suddenly and mysteriously ran off to LA, abandoning her fiancé and family. She is forced to return home, after a DUI leading to an accident, in which she is badly injured. She must confront the secrets and consequences that she was hoping to avoid by running away years ago. She is not the only member of the family with something to hide, whether it is a long buried secret or a current deception. The story flows smoothly from chapter to chapter through multiple points of view, so that the reader experiences the unfolding of events through each character's eyes. These perspectives help build the tension and allow the reader to connect and empathize with the characters. The storylines were intense and emotional with unexpected twists and turns, creating a real page-turner. It is hard to believe this well-crafted family drama is written by a debut author. @CeladonBooks #partner #CeladonReads #WeAreTheBrennans #BookishFirst
I Enjoyed It

When Sunday Brennan wakes up in the hospital after a drunk driving accident, she decides to go home to her family in New York. However, five years ago, she abandoned them and her long-time boyfriend/fiancé with no explanation. She knows that this reunion isn't going to be easy. Sunday is determined to get her life back on track on the east coast, even if it means dealing with an angry ex-fiancé and resentful brothers. However, she starts to realize that they might just need her as much as she needs them. An old character from their past comes back into their life and almost takes the Brennan family's pub to the brink of financial ruin. To save the pub Sunday realizes that she must dig up old secrets. Secrets that cause the Brennan family to confront their mistakes and attempt to find a way forward together. The alternating view points really added to the suspense and kept the reader interested. I enjoyed that this one was a thriller but also had the heartfelt tones of what it's like to stick together as a family.
