Review Quotes

Plants and flowers may grow with abandon in nature, but gardening is no easy task. In this book about learning from failure, one family discovers what it takes to care for many kinds of plants. Four children want to see a small potted fern grow; they water it, give it plenty of sun, and even talk to it. Before long, however, the fern perishes owing to its less than ideal conditions. The children turn to the library and read as much as they can about what ferns need to thrive. They try again with a second fern, and they do much better, adding more plants until their garden grows so vast that it needs to be moved outside. Readers will learn a great deal about gardens, from seeds to pollinators to soil dwellers. Even when it is hard or when things do not go as the children would like, they persevere in the face of adversity. Pastel-colored images evoke spring, bringing the garden to vibrant life. VERDICT Elementary school students learning about gardens and the importance of persistence will enjoy this story.--School Library Journal Online

The trials, tribulations, and joys of gardening are brought to light in this entertaining tale of one family's introduction to caring for indoor plants and using that know-how in a garden, from Joanna Gaines of HGTV's Fixer Upper fame. Beginning with a fern that dies after being over-loved and over-watered, four children and their parents study up on what plants require: light, water, and a bit of conversation. Once they feel ready, the family works together to design a fruit, vegetable, and flower garden. As the plot takes shape, the family gains knowledge about seeds, garden critters--both good (worms and ladybugs) and bad (aphids)--and pollinators, including hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Though the family has some trouble with animals eating their produce, they remember that 'every failure or setback teaches us something.' Delicately detailed and engaging illustrations deftly follow the garden's progress. Packed with useful information in an easy-to-understand format, this will help children, and their adults, who wish to venture into the world of growing some of their own food and flowers.--Booklist

This is a great family book. I initially fell in love with the illustrations and had read it at a public garden house near me and ordered it online at the beginning of my pregnancy because I remembered reading it that one time. I’m so glad that target offers this book for purchase as well as many others online. This is such a cute book about family values and teamwork. Me and my boyfriend loved this read and are happy to add it to our little ones library. Thank you target!

My daughter (3.5) loves this book! The illustrations are beautiful. It is a longer read, but the story lesson is very sweet. We’ve since gifted it to a friend and plan to continue to gift it!

The book is lovely - the beautiful illustrations, fabric spine, and promise of a wholesome story about a family garden were what led me to buy this book in the first place. However, the story reads like a long-winded explanation from a semi-famous person rambling about her family and their garden. It is long, and boring, and does not flow well at all, like reading an instruction manual on gardening that doesn't even teach you how to garden. My daughter does enjoy longer books, but this one has sat unchosen on her shelf for months after we first tried to read it together. If you are purchasing this as tabletop decor for spring or to construct an aesthetically pleasing bookshelf, then you're in luck! But if you want a good book to read with your child, then there are many other preferable options. Lastly, I think it very self-centered of the author not to credit the illustrator on the spine of the book. Every other children's book I own has both names on the spine and cover, but this book only credits her on the cover. A small detail, but as the illustrations are the best part of this book, she deserves to be on the spine too.

Very pretty book. I bought this just for fun one day for my 2 and 3 year olds. The story is a bit long and dull for my 2 year old, but my 3 year old loves asking questions about all of the illustrations. I’d recommend this to anyone who wants to start a garden with their children.

In Joanna Gaines' first children's book, We Are the Gardeners, the reader is introduced to the trials and triumphs of a family garden. From the first little fern that Chip gifted to his wife, to the full outdoor garden that it inspired, the Gaines family learns a number of lessons, both in gardening and in overcoming obstacles. This book is a sweet story about a gardening, working together as a family, and never letting failures define the journey. Whether you're looking to encourage a young gardener or just looking to help your children pick up from a set back, We Are the Gardeners would make a wonderful read. *Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.
