My cats love it but 4 stars because of gums
4 out of 5 stars
Diva Cat - 4 months ago
originally posted on wellpet.com
I've spent the past few months trying numerous brands of a wet food to replace the discontinued brand my 3 kitties loved and Wellness wins! They all LOVE it, which is saying something. First the bad, because there is a lot of good! Why 3 gums? There is cassia, xanthan and guar in all the patés it seems. Xanthan in particular is known to cause gastro issues in some cats, including diarrhea etc. A number of your reviewers noted gastro upset after the new (now old) recipe change some 7 years ago. I had been looking for a gum-free or minimum gum food but the fact we're going with Wellness is a testament to its other wonderful ingredients and nutrition profile. If you change the recipe, please minimize the gums. Our old food only and one gum, guar. However, I do suspect my fussy 12 year old prefers foods with gums because of the texture. I've tried gum-free, more expensive brands, but he won't eat them LOL. Fortunately, none of the kitties seem to have a sensitivity. They have been through over a dozen large tins now with no digestive issues and did I mention they LOVE it? Gobbled in seconds! I only buy patés because fussy gramps will only eat paté. Specifically, I buy the turkey, turkey/salmon and chicken patés. Other than the gums, the ingredients are very clean and sound delish! Also, very glad you don't use carrageenan (and advertise that on the tin) as that would have been a deal-breaker. There are a few plant based ingredients, such as carrots and cranberries, which is fine; cats do ingest plant based foods sometimes. I've had cats who love to eat peas and cantaloupe! The main draw in the ingredients are the real meat, real organ meat, real broth and fish oil, yum!! There are no by-products or grains which would be deal-breakers for me. My 3 kitties are 1, 10 and 12, so I also wanted to find a food that would be good for all age groups. One thing I love about this food is that the phosphorous level is relatively low, which is great for senior kitties to potentially help stave off kidney disease that is so common in older cats, but good for kitties of any age really. This food also fits the budget as I can get good deals on the large cans. The smaller cans are not so cost effective, but if you've only got one cat, it is a good price for the quality. In addition to their wet food, they get a weight and hairball formula kibble (not Wellness) that they all love. Even the young one gets the weight control because he is getting the canned food. He has the potential to gain weight and has slimmed down a wee bit (0.2 pounds) since starting it a couple of months ago which is good. He is what you would call a "dense" cat...you would never believe looking at him that he weighs 15lbs! Anyway, a bit off topic LOL. Thank you for a great product and I hope my review will help others!

My 17-year-old housecat finds this the only food she will eat with enthusiasm. Until I found it she was wasting away and crying. Now she appears in much better condition and almost never caterwauls. And comes around regularly for petting.

Metal pieces in the food!!

I am so torn- my 6 month old kitten has been raised Since we got her from the breeder. More than once I have found pieces of metal in the food I am blown away that this is happening. I’m also torn because my kitten won’t eat any other food I have tried other high quality foods and she will not touch it and I end up wasting it I also don’t want her to fail to thrive so I with my fingers go through the food before giving it to her and I agree with the other reviews that their cat smell the feces smells and my cat has no other issues is a very clean cat but she just smells down there really bad and she only eats this food twice a day

My cat loves this food, and cleans his dish every time. He is a healthy 10-year old, and everyone comments on how soft his fur is.

3 gum ingredients is not healthy. There are healthier ingredients. Perhaps Wellness could forth the effort.

My four cats love it!

I find the smell and texture to be very friendly and appetizing when I open the can. A feral kitten became a member of the family and my Vet neighbor told me if you love them you won't feed them cheap food. I thought Friskies was fine, she said "NOT AT ALL NUTRITIOUS!" My cat is very healthy naturally which is partly due to the fact we fed him and his 4 other feral siblings from the beginning in early 2018. He isn't finicky so I can't speak to that for those with cats as such. But when my Vet says the ingredients in Wellness are all good here for healthy & balanced nutrition then I am satisfied and so is Rover, my cat! I switched him to that from Nutro which is also a good quality food. I like the larger 12.5 oz cans. Econmical and quality and I get two days out of a can for him. He loves all the flavors and he has been eating it for about 5 months steady for morning and night meals, always happy to eat it. he also gets healthy snacks but each meal he eats every bite of the Wellness without hesitation. He's 90% indoor cat and his Vet checkup came back very healthy. Coat is beautiful, teeth stay clean eating this, breath is good, stools are excellent, urine is without issue, healthy! Lastly, Rover's feral cat mother had ANOTHER litter this year in my back yard and 3 of the four kittens have taken up residency outside but they are very happy and safe here. They love the Wellness! 2 months ago when they started coming near the patio nearly begging for help, really made me sad they were so malnourished! They were very weak, smaller than average bags of fur and bones, really sad actually. Weak and appeared unstable each of them. But now, 2 months later, on Wellness they are growing, healthy, full of energy, active, playful and very thankful. By all accounts very healthy and vibrant kittens. They look so healthy and the Vet agrees. Wellness is a great savior for these 3 little girls plus Rover.

My 5 year old Blue Russian, Bunky, loves Wellness. It’s the only food he will eat. Turkey is one of his favorites and as soon as I open the can he comes running. The price is good and the quality seems great because he eats it in seconds.

I dont give my cat this all the time but more as a treat. Its the only brand ive tried that doesnt give him the runs. Usually he cant handle soft food. But this is hands down a winner. He loves the turkey flavor. Definitely will keep buying

This is the only food our cat can eat without getting sick. I know chicken is supposed to be best for cats, but our cat gets sick from chicken. We don’t believe in feeding her the cheap stuff, but our vet recommended Wellness turkey formula and sure enough, she’s a lifelong fan!

The cats love it. Stinky and appetizing. Not too expensive. Easy to find at most pet stores. They love the pate version and I like wellness food. We have two cats and they both gobble it up.

My cat goes for this stuff like there’s no tomorrow. She’s a picky eater, so if she loves it, I love it. I wish they had a bit more variety though.
Current formula causes horrible diarrhea

For years, we used to rely on Wellness to provide better quality ingredients over the usual commercial brands that use by-products. However, this new formula causes horrible diarrhea and IBS in our cat. Explosive diarrhea that had the consistency of pudding and stinks up the entire room. Litter box wall was always splattered with brown spots like a Jackson Pollock painting. Poor kitty strained and moaned while he did his number 2. After a year of determining the cause and trying different remedies to fix his "IBS", turns out it was this food. Once off the Wellness, the poo returned to normal. Immediately! It didn't matter how little of the Wellness he had (small amount mixed in other food), it would give him diarrhea. This formula is absolutely messed up. Now we have all these extra cans that we don't know what to do with. Don't feel like it's right to donate this substandard food that may cause diarrhea to other pets to the shelter. Waste of money.

This is the only brand of canned food my cats enjoy. I’ve been feeding them it for at least 10 years. They never get sick of it and their health is optimal. I have a tortishell short hair and tuxedo main coon.
