Just 15 days after the warranty expired, my WD Passport 2TB hard drive stopped working. It shows a bad sector error, and the data is no longer accessible. Two terabytes of photos and videos—priceless memories of my loved ones—are lost forever and cannot be recovered.

Hi, We apologize for the inconvenience and for delayed response. We recommend that you try connecting the drive to another computer using a different cable and USB ports. If the drive creates same issue with another computer then open a ticket with the error screenshots if any at https://support-en.wd.com/app/askweb our technical team will contact you as soon as possible and resolve your issue. Please allow me to inform you that WD does not have any in-house data recovery service in order to recover the files from the affected/non-functional hard drives. You may need to contact a Data Recovery company to recover the data. If there are no backups or second copy of the data on a different device or location and data recovery is required, please contact one of our Data Recovery Partners or refer to the mentioned link: https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/18754

I bought this product for college art files. It was recommended to me and the 2 TB size was appealing. I had it for five months before I dropped it less than a foot off the ground. It has stopped working and is "invalidated." I am very upset. The work I offloaded for a portfolio is now gone and I have no clue how to restore it.

Hi, we're sorry to hear that. Please know that hard disk drives are precision devices and must be handled with care. Dropping and strong vibrations can damage the drive or corrupt data. Moreover, for data on the drive, we recommend contacting WD's trusted third-party data recovery partners at (https://support-en.wd.com/app/datarecovery).

1 reply from SM OLS team - 11 months ago
Hello Camjam, We're sorry to hear about your user experience with WD My Passport for Mac Portable Drives and appreciate your time for providing the review. There can a few causes due to which the drive has stopped working. Such causes include the faulty USB port of the drive or the computer, faulty USB cable of the drive or the drive itself may not be getting enough power to spin up and register on the computer to show up. Unsafe ejection of the drive during any read or write operation can also result in the corruption of the drive's partition. Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience. "Setting up and using WD Security and WD Drive Utilities": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13880 "Windows or macOS Cannot Find My Drive": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12455 If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty. "How to Get an RMA to Replace a Defective Product, Obtain a Power Supply, or USB Cable for a WD Product": https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10336 Please get in touch with our technical support team directly to elaborate on the issue along with error screenshots. You can open a support ticket at (https://support-en.wd.com/app/askweb). the customer support team get back to you in a earliest possible time.

Worst Experience Ever - Security Password rejected

I bought the WD 5TB My Passport™ for Mac from Officework in January last year. I've been using it nearly everyday to keep all my important files in this external hard drive in the past 18 months. To my shock the hard drive rejected my password and I have no way to retrieve anything suddenly! Have read through all the support pages in WD website and got the answers about they have no way to recover the encrypted data in the hard drive. The only way is to format it or set a new password but all the data in the drive will gone. There's no constructive solution to help recovering my valuable data and WD just keep their hands off from the problem. Will never buy their products again.

I've worked with external hard drives a lot. I've formatted many different brands, some to work across PC and Macs. Never have I encountered something quite as awful as this one. Although this says compatibile with MacOS 11+, I have yet to get it to work across Monterey and Ventura. I've had IT at my workplace try to fix the issue, and have followed instructions from WD support. Nothing has worked yet, but WD support is going to call me to try to fix it. However, it's cutting into hours of my work time, which is completely unacceptable. So far it's a complete waste of hardware that cost a lot of money.

I never write reviews, but I'm going out of my way to write this one. I trusted this product to securely back up my images, and it failed on me after TWO MONTHS. I'm a photographer and have lost so many images that people have paid me for - weddings, newborns, engagements, personal photos.. gone. I wish I had come here to read the reviews before purchasing, because it looks like a lot of people have had this issue! I would like a full refund AND I'd like my recovery to restore these images paid for. I am so angry! I will NEVER purchase a WD password again!! I will continue to write negative reviews until this is taken care of.
